Pairing Picasso at the MFA Boston

I recently went to a curatorial lecture on the new Pairing Picasso exhibit at the Boston MFA.  The lecture was great.  The curator walked us through all the whys — why she chose the artwork she chose, why she hung the exhibit the way it's hung, etc.  It really made the experience of viewing the exhibit so much better.  Here's a peek at the exhibit:

It's a small exhibit — just one gallery.  In fact, I've shown you every single piece in the exhibit in these photos.  But it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the Boston area.  The sheer scale of these paintings, not to mention the texture of the paint, is breathtaking.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • So visual! Quite the presentation and learning experience about this master painter, unlike any I’ve seen.

  • Thanks for the tour, Julie.
Can you imagine being Picasso’s companion and he says, “Oh, honey, I used you as a model for this painting?” 😉

  • Thank you so much for permitting us to enjoy this exhibit with you, I feel so inspired ! I love how you photograph the paintings as a whole and in parts! It really helps to see how the painting works and how my art can be inspired by it. Again thanks!

  • There is something magic about Picasso’s line in his drawings. We had a huge Picasso exhibit in Seattle awhile back, and it was a wonderful opportunity to see how he developed as an artist. He had an enormous talent, and was immensely prolific. I was also fortunate enough to be in New York when there was a Picasso exhibit at the Guggenheim (not a great venue for his huge paintings). These were some of his final works, and it was fascinating to see how he just had to keep going, even when his ideas were rather flimsy and his attention was turned to the erotic in his drawings and etchings. That quality of line was still there, though. Thanks, Julie, for sharing these pairings!

  • Thank you Julie. I claim to love art but when I see you pouring over these paintings and then remember how close I live to galleries of London I am ashamed I don’t visit more often. I think you are a true artistic soul, and I want to be more like you.

  • Thank you Julie for taking us to these galleries, beautiful and inspiring places. I really like the quote by Picasso about each canvas being part of the process and a stand alone piece. Any way that’s what I got. I’ll go back and write it down.
