Have you heard the news about the new Vincent van Gogh painting discovered by the National Galleries of Scotland? "Hidden from view for over a century, the self-portrait is on the back of the canvas with Head of a Peasant Woman and is covered by layers of glue and cardboard," the museum said in a statement on Thursday. You can read this NPR article about it.
It's such an exciting discovery and a fascinating conservation/restoration problem. Reading about it made me want to revisit some of the beautiful van Gogh artwork that I've had the opportunity to see over the years. I think the most impressive collection of his work that I've had the chance to view in-person was at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. (I blogged about my visit to the museum back in 2018 and you can check it out in two parts: PART ONE and PART TWO.)
I've included a few of my faves from that visit below — lots of close-up so that you can see all of that gorgeous impasto texture and detail.
On my bucket list is visiting The van Gogh Museum in The Netherlands. Have you been? If so, I'm totally jealous…but I also want to hear all about it!
Thanks for stopping by!

Van Gogh painted over the original painting for a reason. This is his art and should be respected for what it is. I believe we should leave it as it is and respect it as such. He has many other self portraits and the face he painted over it is beautiful.

I believe its on the back of the painting and not underneath it. Also, he likely reused the canvas for financial reasons.

If you’re in NL, and love Van Gogh, you really should also take in the Kroller Muller Museum. It’s in a national Park outside of Arnhem Nijmegen area. Has the second largest collection of Van Gogh in the world! The park itself is amazing. At the parking lot and included in the entry price are hundreds of bikes to use as you tour the grounds which includes all kinds of natural wonders and architecture in addition to the art museum! Not crowded either. Truly a site to see!

I have been to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Tickets now have to be purchased online with a designated timed entry. It’s several floors and my advice is to start at the top floor and work your way down. You will be going from later works to earlier ones but that way you are not traveling along with the hoard of people in your same time slot. My husband did a blog post of our visit there in 2013. Quality of photos is not good but it gives you an idea. There are also lots of other posts about Amsterdam and other places. http://ratbagp.blogspot.com/2013/06/van-gogh-museum.html
The Netherlands is a great place to visit. I also recommend the Kroller Muller Museum if you are traveling outside of Amsterdam.

i wonder if they could date the cardboard and or glue??? surely they can determine if the cardboard/stock was available in his time frame. doesn’t seem like the kind of thing an artist would do. also, why re-stretch and prime when you could just paint over?

I’ve been to the Van Gogh in Amsterdam, and could hardly see through my tears. The expressiveness of his paint application just blows my mind. And I’m always so sad that he died too soon. I don’t remember how many hours I was there…I lost track of time. I hadn’t thought of going against the crowd! That’s a great idea!
Julie, I know you’ll get yourself there-enjoy!
