My Aunt, who lives in San Francisco, recently alerted me to the coolest thing ever!  SFMoMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) has such a vast collection of art — only 5% of the collection is ever on display — that they decided to come up with a fun way for people to explore more of their collection.  In essentials, you send a text to them and you receive an image of an artwork and some information about it in return.  It's called the "Send Me Project."

I sent a few texts, and here's what I got:

"Send me love" resulted in 1977 plans for a love seat by John Dickinson:

"Send me exuberant" resulted in this apt photo by Arthur H. Fellig:

"Send me mom" resulted in a macabre painting by Jim Morphesis:

"Send me America" resulted in this daguerreotype:

"Send me Matisse" resulted in his painting "Femme au cheapeau"

"Send me Frida" resulted in this painting of Frida Kahlo by Yasumasa Morimura:

"Send me Serra" resulted in this photograph by Sonya Noskowiak.

I was expecting a photo of this famous Richard Serra work, which I had seen on display at SFMoMA.

I was amused by the Noskowiak photo's echo of that famous Serra sculpture!

"Send me Robot" was pretty spot on with this piece by Nam June Paik

I had to laugh at "Send me rain" because I got this photo of sprinkles by Martin Parr:

"Send me music" and "send me jazz" both resulted in this painting by James Weeks:

Perhaps my favorite was "send me floral" and the resulting 1979 photo by Bill Owens:

I literally laughed out loud.

I didn't think it would be as fun as it is, but now that I've started texting, I can't stop asking for art!  I think it's because you don't just get art.  You get a kind a cryptic visual message to decode.  Why this image in response to that word?  I'm really enjoying interpreting what I get.

Give it a try for yourself!  Send a text to 572-51 that starts with "send me" and see what you get!

Thanks for stopping by!
