Hello! My son had a birthday party about a month before his actual birthday because he is a Thanksgiving baby. And, as you know, everyone is busy with their families at Thanksgiving. So we teamed up with some friends who are all turning 4 this Fall and had a joint birthday party that his entire preschool class was invited to. I made him two things for the party: a birthday shirt…
…and a cake (kind of).
I didn't bake it. Rather, I took a supermarket cake and did a mini makeover on it. Today I'm sharing a video detailing the transformation of that cake. It doesn't sound like it's super art related, but I promise you, it is! Watch the video for all the details:
Here are the things from the birthday cake makeover process that I think are applicable to most art projects:
- Work with the materials you have.
- Think about what can create the mood you're after in your artwork.
- A clear focal point or focal area can effectively distract from areas that aren't as strong or well developed.
- Have a vision, but be flexible. Things are allowed to change along the way.
- You don't need to cover things up as much as build upon them.
- Consider the viewer. Who is the audience for this piece? What do you want their reaction to be?
- Details matter. Taking the time to really focus on the small stuff can be enormously impactful.
