Studio Snippet #27: Replacement Mixing Formula for Golden’s Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold

WideShotwithBottles-wm
Artists, like me, have long loved Golden's Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold for several reasons:

  • Vibrancy: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold is known for its vibrant and intense hue. It has a rich warm tone that can add a brilliant pop of color to artwork.
  • Transparency: It can be layered over other colors or used as a glaze to create luminous effects and depth in paintings.  I love that it doesn't cover up what's underneath, but instead seems to highlight it.
  • Mixing Properties: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold is particularly useful for mixing various shades of oranges, browns, and earthy tones.  It's a color with a lot of depth so it brings a lot to the table when mixing it with other colors.
  • Unique Appearance: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold has a distinct warmth and brilliance. Give the name, you'd think it was yellow or gold, but it's more of an orange or a brown. It's the kind of color that makes people who hate brown and orange, fall in love with it!

So you can imagine that people were dismayed when, earlier this year, Golden announced that the pigments to make Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold were no longer available.  Eeep!  Luckily, there's a (kind of) solution.

I like the mixed version of the color.

It's pretty close to the mark and it has many of the same qualities as the original paint color.  Be sure to pin or save the formula, so that you have it the next time you need it:

This formula should work for all weights of Golden paints.  I *think* it will also work for their QoR watercolors.  Links for you:

I hope you found this video useful.  I'm teaching a class all about Golden paints and mediums in June 2024.  Check it out HERE.

  • Your videos are so helpful! I did not know that QNAG had been discontinued; it is one of my favorite colors and I appreciate that you provided the formula Golden suggested along with the demo showing the comparison. You alway provid such great content and that is why, year after year (10-15 years now …) I have been following your work and taking your classes. Thank you, Julie.
