Another super fun Book Club yesterday! We discussed Mark Hearld’s Work Book.

It’s a wonderful book, so let’s dive right in:
I love instructional books because they are packed with tips and exercises. But you can still learn from non-instructional art books, like this one. For instance, as you saw in the video, I made a list of “ideas to try” as I read the book. And as a result of that list, here is a multi-block print I made inspired by Hearld’s work in this book:

I tried a few color variations:

If you’d like to claim one of these beautiful prints for your own, they’re $25/each. Buy one here.
I also spent a long time thinking about two colors versus three.

I’m quite interested in pursuing this style of print some more.
Thanks for stopping by!

This was a great book review and unexpected take-away on creativity! Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful Book Club on a marvellous book!
Thank you for showing me a way to look more actively at this type of book and for the ways to make my own instructions.
A delightful 45 minutes 🙂
I just started Jane’s Creative Strength training and enjoying reading/doing! Hope to join you march 9! Thanks Julie
What a lovely book, I really enjoyed looking at his work, but I think I wouldn’t read it as it sounds for too wordy for me, meaning intellectual. But what an amazing artist. Thank you for your wonderful and helpful review. Thank you. xx
Thanks so much Julie for expanding our art knowledge, I enjoyed Book Club this week (even though I had to miss the live) and am looking forward to the new book.
This is one of my all time favorite browse art books. His work is so dynamic. It was great to see it featured and I live your schema for ways to interact with the text.
Thanks, Ellie!
yay! Glad you liked it!
I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
You’re so welcome!
I’m glad you enjoyed the book!
You’re so welcome!
Excellent review of what looks like an inspiring book! I’m signed up for a block carving class next month, so it’s very timely. I really liked how you have tips on how we can use a book like this, which is not instructional, per se. I wanted to alert your followers that I located an eBay seller who has four copies for sale for $34 USD. They don’t have covers, and are fuschia colored, but hey- the insides are the same.
