Today I want to share an art tip with you!
I'm usually super good about washing out my paintbrushes. They may sit in a jar of water for a week, but I try very hard to never let paint or glue harden in them. After all, that's how a perfectly nice brush becomes a stick.
That said, I recently discovered that one of my favorite brushes had not been thoroughly washed after I taught a class. I had assumed it was okay and stuck it in my brush bucket when I got home. When I took it out to use it, it was as hard as a rock.
Nooooooooooo!
I vaguely remembered someone telling me that soaking your brushes in Murphy's Oil Soap would bring them back from the dead. I was skeptical, but I figured it couldn't hurt.
I filled a container with Murphy's Oil Soap and placed the brush in it. The Murphy's Oil Soap only needs to cover the bristle portion of the brush.
Several hours later I removed the brush and rinsed it out. And do you know what?
The bristles were soft and pliable again!
What?! So magical!
If you've got brushes that need a bit of rescue-ing, I highly recommend a bit of Murphy's Oil Soap to save the day!
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Don't forget to tune into HSN today (either on your TV or online) at 6pm EST! I'll be on some time between 6pm and 7pm demoing the ScanNCut!

Good to know but I must say that I am obsessed with rinsing my brushes almost immediately after using them. My mojo doesn’t get interrupted since I’m such a slow creator:-)

Thanks a lot for the tip. I always rinse my brushes after use but one never knows. I don’t know the equivalent of Murphy’s Oil in france but I’ll find out.

You know what else works? Hair conditioner. For real. I save the hotel sized ones just for this purpose. Empty them into a jar, soak the bristles and when done, cover the jar and reuse the conditioner again and again whenever you have the stiff brush problem.

Murphy’s Oil soap also works great to soak your stencils in after they
get too much build-up of paint. Or if you are OCD, like me, I try and clean them after each use or soak them overnight in the sink or in an old cookie sheet with Murphy’s Soap and water. Great tip to use it on the brushs…which are the most important tool.
Love your blog and art.

Another thing that works is Krud Kutter, red label. This (and Murphy’s Oil Soap, too, but not together) works to clean stencils when the residue gets too thick.

I love Murphy’s Oil Soap. I’ve used it for years to clean. It’s nice to know that I already have a product I like that can be used for other purposes. 🙂

I enjoy your tips and tricks. I bought some fun duct tape and used it on my stencils. So much easier to use now. Your art is amazing and very inspiring. Thanks for all your work in producing so many videos.

I’ve also used Murphy’s oil soap to remove spills and splatters of acrylic paint from my clothes. It’s best if you use it the same day or two after you get the paint on yourself. Apply the oil soap full strength to the paint and then soak the garment in cool water until you can add it to your next load of wash.

I love Murphy’s oil soap! Glad to know they will protect my bristle friends. I saw you on HSN and you are the best presentator. Brother should be very proud of you. I would love to have that Scan n Cut but my senior eyes cannot stand that little screen. Thanks for the tip!

I’ve never tried Murphy’s Oil Soap, but I’ll definitely give it a shot. I’m absolutely terrible about taking care of my brushes. I get distracted so easily I’ll drop one on my table and forget to stick it in the water. Luckily I just buy the cheap ones, but I’d much rather rescue them!
