Do you ever get a bug in your bonnet? A few days ago I decided that I need to draw a huge face. I don't know where the impulse came from or why it came at that moment, but it was an all consuming feeling and so I slapped up a big piece of tar paper and got to work.
I love this giant face. It's sitting on my painting wall staring at me right now. I know that I want to paint it, but I can't quite figure out the colors/the style. I'm going to think about it for a while and maybe give it a start over the weekend.
As I have evolved as an artist, I've discovered that time and thought really help my process. I used to barrel straight through all of my projects without any thinking about where I was going or why. Nowadays, I like to take some time. So, I'm going to keep staring at it until I get that bug in my bonnet again!
How about you? Do you let things marinate until you feel excited about them? Or do you march right through?
Thanks for stopping by!

Yes, its like measure twice, cut once rule….the second measure is thought….
tell us more about tar paper substrate….What paint do you use on tar paper? Oil or acrylic? Did you get info about material compatibility (paint and surface)before you started bought a big roll?

My favorite part of art is the marination! My mind is so much happier/at ease when I can mentally “work on” an unfinished page in my art journal. It helps give my mind a place to go instead of it’s usual favorite places: worry, guilt, overthinking…
The only downside is that sometimes I hesitate to finish a piece b/c I won’t have something to ponder in between finishing one and starting another. And I know I could ponder a new piece, but I get more motivation to make time for art when I’m pondering a specific piece vs ALL THE THINGS TO TRY.
Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to see what this face becomes!

Yes, I do like to go back and re-visit a piece in midstream, sometimes two or more in process. Even just a walk around the neighborhood is enough to get the juices rolling again, sometimes overnight. I think it’s good to listen to that inner voice and not just react to cover up the anxiety of not knowing the answer.
I’m also curious about this “tar paper”…..went to Amazon to look and thought what in the world. Say more about this material.

I use acrylic and I dont really care about material compatibility. My theory is that you can mix oil and water, so to speak, it just may not be the intended result!
