Art Journal Every Day: In My Travel Sketchbook

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Hey guys!  Today I'm sharing a peek into my travel sketchbook.  I've got one quick sketch I worked on in the airplane and two from sitting in lectures at PAX East.

For me, the key to successful sketching "out in the wild" is (1) a teeny tiny moleskine (it's easy to hold in your hand, has great paper, and stays open when you're working, and (2) letting go of "reality" after the initial sketching is completed — in other words, once I've sketched what I see, I add colors and shadows and background and everything else simply according to my fancy.  I'm not a court reporter after all.  :)

Take a peek:

This is a landscape journal, but every now and then I like to turn it sideways to create a long stacked image.

This is a super teeny notebook.  I think you can tell by the size of my finger that this photo is larger than the original drawing.

For this spread, we're back to the usual landscape orientation:

A guy who was sitting behind me at the lecture above saw my sketch and wanted to commission me to create some art for him.  He offered me $5.  I was both flattered and insulted — both of which I feel are appropriate emotions under the circumstances.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Listening and sketching? What talent! I would turn my ears off and not hear a thing. And $5? Oh my! Not much art appreciation there! Love your sketches and that you work in such a tiny journal.

  • Love your tribute to the cactus in PHX. $5? It’s the thought that counts, he loved your work, that made me smile.

  • I too would have been flattered and insulted. However, he did appreciate your work enough to notice and make an offer. I vote for more flattered than insulted. Love the sketches.

  • Chuckling at the $5 …. what a back handed compliment! Honestly though, one of my definitions of heaven would be to sit in your studio and just look thru all your art/travel journals, I just love when you post pics from the various journals and amazed that you did this while traveling, or maybe I’m not so amazed b/c you are in a different stratosphere with your art … #onacreativeroll. Keep it UP! And come back to Austin!!!!

  • What supplies did you use besides your tiny Moleskine? I’d like to start carrying these with me.

I love your little sketches too. Maybe I should try smaller…less intimidating for sketches. Thank you for all you do!

  • Only $5.00? Was that per square inch or something? lol Loved your little art journal. I live in the desert southwest so I especially loved the cactus. Would love to know what you used to color your artwork.

  • I always enjoy your watercolor sketches. Watercolor is my first love although I love all mixed media. I love seeing how your drawing has improved over the years. It is a technical skill that takes practice and you have certainly been practicing. I have always enjoyed your use of color. I might even call you a colorist. 🙂 Keep up the good work! I love your posts and podcast!!
