Wood Inlay Briefcase for Father’s Day

During a recent visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I was blown away by a video I watched on creating wood inlay.  Here is the video:

I always thought inlay was beautiful, but the video gave me a new level of respect for the craft.  When I sat down to think of a Father's Day project, I decided that I might be able to create a wood inlay ornament for a small wooden briefcase I had picked up at Michaels.  I used my ScanNCut and some very thin wood veneer with an adhesive backing to create this adorable gift box for Dad:

I think the inlay accent on the box looks so professional!  And when I showed it to my assistant Suzanne, she kept running her fingers across it, saying "oh, that's so cool."  We both agreed that it absolutely looks like real inlay!

Watch the video for the how-to:

Obviously, I did this on a box, but you could easily take this idea and do it on a table, a frame, all sorts of different surfaces!  It's wood inlay made super duper easy!

Please note: The briefcase I linked to isn't exactly the same as the one in the video, but I couldn't find that one online.

Thanks for stopping by!

I am a paid spokesperson for the Brother ScanNCut.  It is a machine that I love and use.  All opinions and projects are my own.

P.S. I will be on HSN (Home Shopping Network) TODAY (Monday, June 6) at 10am and 3pm EST with the ScanNCut.  Tune in on your TV or online.

  • You were Energy ++ on HSN yesterday morning, I enjoyed the broadcast for new info and ideas (I own a Scan and Cut from a previous presentation!) The briefcase is a great idea for a desk or decorative in an office; I can also picture the veneer D-A-D in a frame as well.

  • Good Morning Julie,
Congrats on the sell out. Yes the Brother Scanncut2 350 sold out on HSN.
I watched yesterday and loved both presentations. All the new ideas ie wood veneer projects are fabulous. I loved the sample tee shirt with your picture on it and the design of your face cut out in iron on transfer glitter. I would think that was a Brother iron on transfer material.
You looked beautiful and your presentation was spot on and awesome.
Thanks for sharing the wood veneer inlay project so quickly. When the first presentation was done I immediately started looking on Amazon for wood veneer.
You and Brother always have such great ideas it keeps me excited to start another project.
I was very glad to see that Brother and Scanncut2 350 and you were the only electronic die cutting machine demonstrated on HSN. I was also very happy to see the snc as a Show Stopper.
Great Job I am so glad I did not miss yesterdays airing of the Scanncut2 350 and you sweet Julie.
Have a great day enjoy your trip home from Florida.

  • Hi Julie,
I’ve had the cut n scan 2,for almost a year now.I thought it would change my life but honestly it’s difficult to remeber the steps to make custom designed projects and the library in the machine is too cheeky for me. Would you consider having a live class where people could bring their machines and learn how to use them? I live in NYC.
