I was in Boston's South Station yesterday and I was suddenly struck by all of the beautiful design inspiration hiding in plain sight.

So I started playing in my art journal.

Artjournal-traininspired
There's some pretty obvious design lifting there.  But I have found that trying to recreate complex patterns has really helped me to understand how things go together.  And that has made me a better doodler and more brave about trying to create my own very complex patterns.  It also helps kick me out of my design rut.  Otherwise I would do the same thing over and over again.

Which leads me to a random thought I've been meaning to share.  Art journaling, like scrapbooking, is a very broad term and combines a wide variety of stuff.  Some art journals are artsy scrapbooks full of photos and memorabilia.  Some art journals are decorated diaries.  Some art journals are about artistic exploration.  Some art journals are about personal exploration.  And on and on and on.  There is no right or wrong way to do it.  I really think that everyone should try their hand at art journaling, at least for a little while.  It's wonderful to simply have a notebook that captures all of your ideas and doodles and random thoughts over a period of time.

What do you think?  If you art journal, why do you do it?  And if you don't, do you have any interest in giving it a try?

On a totally personal and un-craft related note, I am so proud of my theatre company!  We were just nominated for FIVE Innovative Theatre Awards!  They're like the Tony's of the off-off Broadway world!  See the announcement here.  I'm wicked excited and so very very very proud!  Thanks for letting me share!

  • My art journal(s) relax me. They give me an inexpensive platform for trying new techniques and combinations. They give me a way of preserving some memories with only a few phrases or words. It’s been since university time that I didn’t keep a proper diary because it was too consuming (and because I always reserved diaries for the heavy stuff when I wasn’t exactly happy) and an art journal allows me to do happy pages and to play with colors without overthinking it or to grieve or to muse or to … you know 🙂

  • Wow, Julie, how on earth do you juggle an outstanding theatre company, amazing scrapbooking, and daily blogging all at once? I don’t know of anyone who successfully wears so many hats! You are certainly talented, and you’re energy is incredible!
You must let us know how you juggle all three. For example, how much time do you devote to each one? Perhaps this can be a topic for a future blog entry.
Now, about the art journal… I’ve always wanted to do one, but my painting (watercoloring) always ends up muddy-looking. I guess I don’t know how to blend the colors well.
For now, I am just trying to produce a decent layout — keeping in mind principles of unity, etc.
Thanks for your delightful post. And CONGRATS on your theater company! You rock!

  • Well I guess I art journal because to me its the freest of all the forms of art out there. Scrapbooking is a type of memory keeping, but seems in my on personal head to have “rules”. Art journaling has none. I can paint the whole page read write a big word “mad” if I want for the day and draw and angry face if I want and who’s to say thats wrong? Or not good design ya know? I also like to practice my drawing in my art journal. Alot of my drawing in my art journal are turned into other things or are jumping points for other ideas in other things. Like some of my drawings turn into carved stamps or digital kit pieces. I might use something I wrote in one on a scrapbook page or on a card. I think if my house was on fire the first thing I’d be scrambling for after my kids would be my art journals seriously. lol.

  • Congrats on the theater news!
Art journal…I have one that is more of a journal that contains all my thoughts and some doodling. The most important part of it for me is putting quotes and sketches in it that I may want to use in the future on LO’s.
I would like to use more paint in it.

  • Congratulations to you and your theater company! How exciting!
I just starting art journaling. I love it! The way I approach it is like a diary, but with very few words. A friend of mine was just having a frustrating time. She is a crafter. I told her to go into her room and just create something for herself, don’t worry about what it looks like, what anyone else will think, just get it all out on paper. I realized that was what the art journal is. If I hadn’t found you through Prima I may not be creating as freely as I am now. It may not be art to some people, but that doesn’t matter anymore. Thank you for sharing with us.

I have just started art journaling and am enjoying exploring it. I have kept a written journal since 1983 – so this art journaling is a stretch for me. I read Art Journaling magazine for inspiration and ideas, plus blogs like yours.

I’ve been thinking of starting my own art journal but I’m not sure what kind of paper to use. I’ve been watching Donna Downey’s art journal videos but I’m not sure what journal she uses. Can you do a class on how to make an art journal? Thanks for showing me that everything doesn’t have to be “perfect”.

I don’t art journal but have been thinking about it so much lately. I just bought some watercolor paper over the weekend and am going to use that to fashion one for myself. I’m looking forward to the journey.
Thanks as always for all the inspiration I get when I visit your blog. Your Art Journal talk was what I needed to get started.
    Cheers! Sara

As for art journaling… I have a lot of interest in trying it and I have tried it. But I think I approached it the wrong way. I journal a lot… and I tend to do it everywhere on anything that isn’t nailed down. I thought that following a prompt blog or two would help me get more creative… explore more of the art side of art journaling. It turned out that I can’t journal on specific subjects that someone else felt moved to write about in a given week or month. I just stopped following along. I think I need a “technique-a-month” sort of art journaling blog so the topic is left to me but I learn something artsy as well.

love the journal pages, colors and your “design lifting”. they came out great! what type of a journal do you use?
i’m trying to journal. i’d like to combine scrapbooking and an art journal. 12×12 pages are too big for me and i always liked altered books. so i thought an art journal would be a good way to combine the 2. i’m just having trouble getting started and my books pages are not good quality.

Lets see if I can fix this. I mean “paint the whole page red” or “my own personal head”.
Opps sorry about that. Great blog topic. It was so good I came back to see what everyone else commented and said!

I don’t art journal because I don’t feel I’m artsy enough. I can do graphic stuff and think creative thoughts but I’m not much of a fine artist. The whole idea scares me.
Planning on teaching any classes on the subject? I used to be afraid of Distress Ink, too 🙂

i love how you were inspired by the architecture…you are so darn creative. i used to doodle and draw all the time as a teenager and in my early 20’s, but i feel like scrapbooking and photography and my kids take up so much of time, that i don’t have the time for anything else at this point. i’ve always wanted to do an art journal though…they are so neat!

As for art journaling, I don’t do much. I do use my “Wreck this Journal” every now and then. It’s fun to realize that there really are SO MANY ways to be creatively expressive. 🙂

  • first, Congrats on the nominations!
I don’t art journal. I guess I just never thought of myself as “that type” of artist. I don’t draw much and I paint even less so I guess I just thought it wasn’t for me.
I too have been watching Donna Downey’s “inspiration Wednesday” videos of her art journaling and it looks very cool. Maybe someday I’ll give it a try.
