Dear Nib Pen,

I think you know how I feel about you.  But on the off chance that you don't, I wanted to write this letter.

I love you.

Not in a boring, pedantic holding hands kind of way.

Not in a stalker-esque show of romance kind of way.

Not in a trivial, staring into each others' eyes kind of way.

In a true, deep, soul mates forever kind of way.

Listen, I'll be the first to admit that it was a bit of a rocky road when we began.  Sure, we met many years ago when I was a kid.  I didn't have the maturity to appreciate you at the time.  But I still remember the day we reconnected.  It was right before Thanksgiving.  I was in full on lust over your luscious lines, your cool retro feel, your delicious ink splats.

We had some growing pains.  I didn't like your friends.  All those ancient colors of Winsor&Newton ink.  Sure, they seemed fun on the outside – candy colored, adorable glass bottles – but the truth is, they were past their prime.

I don't want to be an age-ist, but sometimes you have to say goodbye.

The next friendship, I have to admit, was my fault.  I'm truly sorry.

That no name bottle of ink looked up at me in Lee's Art Shop and I thought the two of you would be the best of friends.  The bottle was heavy, attractive, and the label promised all sorts of things – waterproof, deep black, and on and on.  I took the bottle home to meet you and you definitely had some laughs.  Some good times.  But the bleeding and the lack of waterproof-ness just made that bottle an unreliable and dangerous friend.

We really tried to make it work.  But it was in an aisle at Dick Blick that the perfect partner appeared.

Black Cat.

Black Cat wasn't cute.  Black Cat wasn't even interesting in a quirky way.  Black Cat had a stupid logo.  I wanted to ignore Black Cat and find a sexier bottle to snuggle up with.

I know better now.  I know now that outside beauty is so superficial.  It's what's inside the bottle that counts.

From the moment Black Cat came home with us, I've been able to form a deeper and more meaningful relationship with you.  Our early flirtation has turned into a full on love affair.  I hope this is forever.

I love that you're adventurous and we can change things up!  Your sexy interchangeable nibs – from tiny thin round lines to big fat square lines – ensure that we never get bored!

The sensual undulations of your tapered body just make me hot.  You feel oh so good in my hand.

You are a beast.  Together we scribble over acrylic, watercolor, ink, fabric, and anything else that gets in our way.  I've never met a pen that could do so much.  I'm getting flushed just thinking about it!

I adore the way you make me feel about my handwriting.  Why does everything look so good when I let you take the lead?  You just glide over the page and as the ink slides through your pointy tip, I let go of all control.  What a release!

I'm so glad that we found each other.  I hope never to be parted.

All my love,

Julie

  • This cracks me up! I have some serious pen love, too. Well, mostly flirtations. I haven’t found my pen soul mate like you did. My favorite journaling pen is my Uniball Gel Impact pen — it has such a great flow. My favorite pens for correcting student essays are the Uniball Vision Elite pens (love the colors, love the feel, love the flow) and Pilot Varsity Pens (they’re basically faux fountain pens). I have yet to find a white gel ink pen that works for me. The ones I’ve tried seem to “stall out” mid-sentence, which is NOT cool. In any case, the point is — I know what mad pen love is, too.

  • Heh, I have to admit, when I started reading this I had to ensure I wasn’t on fu penguin. You captured his style well… while being much less vulgar :o)
Fountain pens are amazing… I was forced to use one while going to school in Germany. I can only imagine the nib pens are equally as great :o)

  • Super cute! There’s nothing like a great love affair. I’ve yet to find mine, but when I do, the pen and I are going to romance forever! I think hubby will be very jealous.
Thanks, Julie, hope you always dance with your beloved nib pen!
