Happy Wednesday! Today's guest post is from Ingrid Kristina V. I hope you enjoy it!
A big thank you to Julie for inviting me to share some of my favourite stencilling techniques! I feel very honoured to be featured on Julie’s blog! After the initial panic attack I gathered my supplies and got the job done!
Today I’d like to share three stencilling techniques with you, dear crafty souls! Before I start I’d like to point out that the key to any successful art journaling is to know the properties and characters of the mediums you intend to use, the rest it down to your imagination and creativity. Today I want to show you how to stencil using oil pastels and I will show you two ways of doing this. Let’s get to it…
Firstly, it is important to gesso your page spread before you start, you can even create texture with it which is always a bonus. Then you’ll need to add some colour to your background. I decided to use the Big Brush pens by Faber-Castell as you can smudge and blend the colour for a while after your application on any non-porous surface (like my Gesso-ed page). I sanded down the entire surface to make it more grungy, added some writing with my white Posca pen, nothing more to it…
I took a homemade stencil, my Pentel Oil Pastel set, scribbled here and there onto my page with my red oil pastel and blended the colour into the background with my finger. Because the Big Brush pens contain an india ink they are permanent when dry and won’t interfere with anything added on top. This means you won’t create one big mud when using oil pastels on top of them…
Then I took my homemade stencil, a baby wipe and removed the pastel through the stencil…
I added some more texture using my 6 x 6 script stencil by TCW and my Light Modeling Paste by Liquitex and let it dry…
I didn’t like the bright coloured background so added some brown oil pastel over the dry modelling paste and some other areas to darken it and repeated the step where I removed the pastel through my stencil. Much better! I also like how the initial colours of the background still peek through around the raised script after adding the darker brown pastel. Nice! This is where the best part comes… Julie’s stencil! Well, that’s just it! That’s the best part… ! Her Corn Flower stencil is to die for! I LOVE it! Now… here’s what I did with it…
This is the fun bit! Position your stencil as desired, scribble over the design with one or more oil pastels (the colours should blend nicely, don’t make mud!)…
Now take your favourite finger and blend the colour into the design, holding down your stencil so it doesn’t move. Just get the colour right in, remove and ta daaah! Not only you will get a nice coloured design, you will also get a bit of added texture. Did I mention that I LOVE texture?
Next step is to seal the entire surface. These oil pastels are not water soluble which is a good thing as they won’t smudge whilst sealing the surface. The next step is however very important because they are not permanent and will smudge over time, if you don’t seal them. Also, if you intend to use any pens on top of them the surface needs to be sealed as not only your pens would get ruined due to the oiliness of the pastel but also it wouldn’t work. So… take a mod podge, matte gel or any other medium with the same properties and cover the entire surface with it. I used a glossy one only because I ran out of a matte gel (nightmare for taking photos!). I added a pretty lady cut out of a very commercial and a full-of-junk-info-celebrity-filled magazine and glued it during the sealing process. I also used a bit of a white gesso by Daler Rowney and my Liquitex Modeling paste to create her hair and let it all dry…
I coloured her hair using oil pastels, sealed her again and worked on her a bit more using the Big Brush pens… I also made her cry later on…
This is another fun way to add interest to your stencilling… stamping through your stencils! How cool is that?! I used my black Stazon due to having to work on a non-porous surface and used the same flower stencil over my design and stamped with the ‘Book’ background stamp by Prima. Remove the stencil and your stamping is just on the stencilled part. Cool, right?!
After a few added touches using an unknown mesh stamp, my Hero Arts background stamp, a few Tim Holtz rub-ons, some shading with the Big Brush pens by Faber-Castell, doodling with my black artist set by Faber-Castell, this is what I ended up with…
… and after I added my motto my page spread was finished..
This page was made during the anniversary of my dear Grandma’s passing (a year ago) so this is my little reminder. I am of the opinion that art journaling serves a purpose as well as it being a fun thing to do. For me, my art journal pages have to have a meaning behind it and this is no exception, hence the motto and the overall design. I find journaling quite therapeutic. I have a practice journal for my meaningless sketches and ideas.
I hope you have enjoyed this post and learned a trick or two on how to journal. I love coming up with fun techniques like my ‘Tie Dye Transfer’ or my recently discovered ‘Crinkle Transfer’ and would love you to visit my blog Ingrid’s Crafts Corner and explore it further. My love for mixed media doesn’t end with art journaling. It transpires into my cardmaking, art, alterations and other fun crafts. Feel free to contact me whilst visiting and/or stay in touch by joining my crafty journey.
Thank you and all the best!

Supplies Used:
Hi there, my name is Ingrid Kristina V, I’m in my early 30’s and live in London with my Fiancé and our two little girls. I have always been a crafty soul and enjoy cardmaking, art journaling, creating fine or mixed media art and more, which I share regularly on my blog Ingrid's Crafts Corner.
My cardmaking style is clean, simple and contemporary, with bold and bright features, as well as artsy, grungy and fun.
My art could be described as grungy, textured, vintage, but I also like to play with colours and visual textures. I have an enormous passion for mixed media and love the creative freedom it gives me. I’m consistently on a lookout for new trends and right now my favourite toy are Brusho crystals so hop over to my blog to see what ‘mess’ I created so far.
