When I was in Tampa for HSN in January, I found myself with a pocket of free time between airings. So, I took myself to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. They had their usual Salvador Dali collection in place, but also a special Frida Kahlo exhibit. I didn't know a lot about Frida Kahlo before I went, but now I do and what a woman! What a life! What a struggle! And through it all, she used art to tell her story.
The exhibit was set up biographically. You traveled through Frida's work (and life ) in a timeline fashion.
I loved, loved, loved her journal pages:
I didn't take a ton of photos in the Dali section of the museum. There's a lid for every pot and Dali isn't really "my thing." Plus, I saw a truly jaw dropping retrospective of his work several years ago at MoMA and it is really difficult for anything to live up to that. Nevertheless I enjoyed seeing his work — especially his lesser known and less "drippy Dali clocks" art.
No visit to a museum is complete without sampling the cafe, right?! I had a nice lunch in their lovely atrium.
I have wanted to check out the Dali Museum for quite a while and I'm glad that I did, especially at a time that they were hosting their Frida Kahlo exhibit. I think that's the main inspiration I'm taking away from this museum visit. Frida Kahlo created fearlessly and told her story in her work even when it made other people uncomfortable.
I don't know if I'll ever be that brave. But in the meantime, I can at least emulate her famous flower crown. ;)
Thanks for stopping by!

I was there 2/16/17! I drove up with artist friend Elcira Morales. The Frida Kahlo exhibit is wonderful!
I didn’t take as many photos as you posted. I did a lot of sketching, instead. There were too many people, all of us with headphones, lol. I bought and am enjoying the exhibit book.
Thank you for posting! Great memory shared!
PS: The Frida Kahlo Exhibit is open through April 17th, 2017. What makes it so special is that it is ONLY her works and about her life. Few exhibits in the U.S.A. show only her works.

Well you are certainly a treasure this morning! I have never gotten to see so much Frida Khalo and being able to enjoy it with my coffee on a giant computer screen from your blog may be a new favorite way to do art galleries for me! You have captured her work and translated it to us. thank you so much. I came across the movie of her life a couple of years ago – Netflix maybe? If you have not seen it you will want to. You and She and Picasso go together well. I particularly like her images relating to her body – her injuries which effected her whole life and her reflection of her daily reality. Very poignant. Also her Luther Burbank portrait – I love how her paintings tell a story so well.
Again, thank you for taking the time to put this together and post for us. You don’t get anything in return from us other than our thanks… please know that you have it1

Yes, I agree with Pat. Thank you! I have always been a fan of Frida Khalo’s art. I had not seen many of the photos you took. So much profound sadness exudes from her richly colored paintings. Now that I understand more Spanish it was an added element of interest. Thank you so much for sharing your rich experiences with visits to art museums.

I have been a long-time admirer of Frida. She certainly did communicate her pain with a style that could be painful for the viewer but her message was/is clear. Thank you for sharing. How wonderful that you could have a new experience with an artist you aren’t familiar with. Life is full of surprises!

I have been a fan of Frida’s since the early 60’s when I visited the Detroit Institute of Art and began of do research on her husband Diego Rivera. I just loved her art work – it spoke volumes. I wish that the DIA had some of her works then as well as Diego. I have gone to 2 of her shows – Detroit and Philadelphia. I would love to see the one in Florida. She truly drew what she knew best: herself and her feelings.

WOW, that painting of Frida Kahlo with the nails and the column is breath-taking. What a strong woman.

Thank you so much for sharing the Frida Kahlo exhibit. She is really one of my favorite artists because of her almost brutal presentation of her emotions through her work. I agree; it is bravery. She had an amazing strength and survived so much. I love how she tells her story.

Wow! Thanks for sharing the exhibit. Awesome work. You did a great job capturing the feel of the exhibit. I love seeing so much of her art, and enjoyed that you included close-ups. Again, thanks for sharing.

Hi Julie,
Wow thank you for posting your visit to the Dali Museum. I would never get there. Now through you I get to see Dali Museum. Thank you so much.
Frida Kahlo could you be channeling her?? Not knowing it. I see similarity in her art journaling. Especially the Eye left shoulder painting. Third eye Chakra. Intuition, opening up the door to the inner self.
I do find some of the paintings to be macabre. I guess when one is in so much pain then it comes through in their artistic work.
I like the Luther Burbank painting. I find it to draw me in and I also like the sketching of it. I also like the painting of the Grandmother knitting. Sad but well done. As is the one with the little girl and lace on her sleeve.
I too am not a fan of Salvador Dali. I find him bazaar. I guess that is portrayal of surrealism. There is a Salvador Dali tarot deck.(Soul Collage). I once had a reading done in New Port RI. The reader used the Dali deck. It was a pretty good reading.
I do think the deck is interesting. He and his wife are depicted in the deck she the feminine and he the masculine characters. Major arcana. Lady with the champagne glass also looks like an eye on her throat. I speak what I see. Throat chakra.
I do like the painting of the lady positive and negative. The one with the up right and upside down painting. Lady upside down with the shroud. It makes me think of Ying and Yang Chinese symbol,Positive and Negative, Feminine and Masculine.
I did like your visit to the Canyon Ranch. I found the Soul collage information very interesting did not know there was a community of that style of art. I find that when one puts their own energy into a creation such as the Soul Collage Cards. That it would be so in tune to the individual that if one was into doing intuitive readings for one self that it would be best advice for them. After all it would come from ones own energies.
Yesterday I made my own Art everyday Journal. I have a mixed media pad. I took 7 pages and I used my scan n cut to perforate the center for the fold of each page. I then sewed my spin of the book in with my sewing machine. I then folder the book in half and it worked out pretty well.
I have a 6×9 inch book with 12 pages plus front and back cover. So far I have used Spectrum noir alcohol markers and water color paints and sparkle markers. That was just the front cover and back cover. I am looking forward to working with my new everyday journal. “Your inspiration”.
Happy Tuesday,
Fawna

Hi Julie,
Wow thank you for posting your visit to the Dali Museum.

I envy you! I have loved Frida for a long time now, and I wish I could see that exhibit! I bought a facsimile of her notebook, and I find it continually fascinating! She was an amazing woman, and illustrates how perseverance can conquer many difficulties!

Thanks for sharing Julie. There is an excellent 2002 movie about Frida’s life played by Salma Hayek that I saw on Netflix recently. I think she (Salma) was nominated for an Oscar. The movie is called simply “Frida”.
The official trailer:

Definitely worth a watch.

Amy – check out the dates on the Dali museum soon – it is closing for three days in march – something like 9 to 12 but I am not looking at it now … for a big motor car event that takes place in st pete. I know only because Julie so inspired me with this blog post that i am making a quick trip down there (12 hour drive one way for me!) to see it before it closes and had to plan it around that closing date time… get there quick!

Did you pick up a copy of her journal for yourself? It’s quite a treasure! Thank you for so many wonderful photos and insights! Some of us have little opportunity to get to see such delights in person.
