Art Journal Every Day: More September 2017 Pages

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

I have some more daily pages to share.  But first, I thought I'd discuss a little bit about where the words on my pages come from.

The large text is usually a sentence or phrase that is rolling around my head.  It could also be a quote.  One of my favorite sources for quotes is brainyquote.com.

The daily journaling is usually not that sexy or exciting.  I blur it because even though I'm usually just writing stream of consciousness thoughts, like complaining about the checker at the supermarket or detailing a cut on my finger, it feels weird to put that stuff on the internet permanently.  The way I do journaling it's simply about dumping my brain onto the page.  I look through my journals from time to time but I almost never read the journaling.

Let's take a peek at some pages now:

This spread features a half page.

That large text block was just a sentence rolling around in my brain.

And you can see that my face holds a secret!

1-detail-face-wm
Another face!  That is a tag I painted years ago based on my "Ava" stencil.  Again, if you're wondering what I do with all of the tags I create, most of them end up being incorporated into either my art journal or a larger work of art.

This page features a pocket!

I have stuffed the pocket full of little art bits that haven't yet found a home.

Lettering does not have to be beautiful.  Don't let the fact that you hate your handwriting or don't think you're "good" at lettering stop you!!  The point of text is communication.  As long as it's readable, I think that's the only thing that really matters!

2-detail2-wm

This is the back of the pocket pages, so it's also a short page.

3-detail1-wm
This page features a text cut out:

3-detail-hello-wm
Because I bind my journals from junque I have laying around, this hello was already in the page when I bound it together.  But you could certainly cut it out of a pre-made journal with a cutting mat and craft knife.

Beyond a brain dump, my art journal is also a place that I experiment.  I was messing around with some of the ScanNCut Disney files and tested some ideas about how to make them more "me" in my journal.

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my journal and I encourage you to add text to your pages!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love how with the junque the journal is still pulled together and has an obvious flow or theme! Okay, next we need a Julie princess. Just sayin’…

  • Noticed that there were no later princesses for Scan and Cut. Do you have a link for Mulan or Pocahontas or Moana? My granddaughters love these characters and identify with them more.

  • Thank you so much for sharing with us! It’s good to know that I’m not alone in the “write it down and never read it again” arena.

  • LOVE these journals. So bright and colorful. Aside from being fun, there’s tons of research to show that doing a brain dump (journaling) is great for your mental health. It helps you sleep better and stops you ruminating over things. Win-win!
