My current #PrintInktober project is a riff on my unfinished 2020 #PrintInktober project.  Back in 2020, I wanted to use the same set of hand carved stamps for all 31 of my prints.  So this year, I'm trying it again (going to finish this time!), but with my Art Foamies Bauhaus Set

…as the stamps I'm using.  Here are my first eight prints:

A few notes:

  • You can see that I allowed some additional stamps (and one stencil) to enter into the prints.
  • Each of the original one-of-a-kind prints I make this month is available for purchase!  $65 (free shipping in the USA, $10 anywhere else).  I haven't had a chance to load them into the shop, so let me know if you see something you want.  Artwork will arrive to you matted in an archival white bevel mat, ready to pop into an 11×14 frame.
  • I've been posting short process videos on instagram and tik tok, so you can check those out if you're interested.
  • One of the things I've been keeping in the front of my mind as I work is: how is a pattern different from an artwork?  It's easy for me to fall into the trap of making a pattern. I love patterns!  So, I find that I need to push myself to make it "art" rather than a piece of patterned paper. Some days are more successful than others.
  • I find that I'm mostly drawn to using the large rectangle, the two circles, and the half circle.  I kind of have to "make" myself use the other pieces of the set.  I'm always pleased when I do it, but I'm not naturally drawn to them.  In that sense, this set has been really good for me.  It has forced me to try some new things.
  • As always, I see how limitations can really push my creativity.
  • Something I want to think about moving forward is value.  Looking at my first 8 pieces, my favorites are the ones with a big value contrast.  They're more graphic.

I'm excited by these layered images and I can't wait to see where I am at the end of the month!  Thanks for stopping by!

  • Julie, this seems like a BIG change from your usual style – the Bauhaus stamps are such simple, bold shapes and I think of your work as usually having a ton more, ummm… chaos? Can you talk about the shift?
