Studio Visit #14: Packing Artwork Orders from my Online Shop

Hello friends!  For today's Studio Visit, I thought I'd take you behind-the-scenes for a look at how I package up some of the artwork from my online shop.

If you want 25% off your first order at Moo (where I buy my business cards, stickers, postcards), use this link: https://refer.moo.com/s/balzerdesigns

At the end of the video, I chat a bit about why it's so meaningful to me when people choose to buy a piece of my art for themselves.  That said, people's motivations for buying art is usually personal and subjective. It could be:

  1. Aesthetic appreciation: They find it visually appealing or captivating. They like the colors, the composition, the texture, or the overall mood. Contemporary art (as in museum art) is very much about intellect, but for the art most people put on their walls, aesthetics is the key.
  2. Intellectual stimulation: While aesthetics is the key for most people, as stated above, some collectors may be interested in artwork that is intellectually stimulating — it provokes thought, raises questions, or offers unique insights into the world.  For instance, I like to spend my reading time on mysteries and romance novels, but I know there are lots of folks out there who like an intellectually stimulating read — even a difficult one.  We're all different.
  3. Investment potential: We all have the dream of finding a lost Rembrandt painting in our attics, right?  And it's probably not because you love Rembrandt.  It's probably because it's the equivalent of finding millions of dollars.  Some people buy art from established or emerging artists with the expectation of financial returns in the future.  This is where publications, news articles, work being acquired by a museum, and all that jazz can be helpful to an artist.  It makes your work worth more.
  4. Emotional connection: I've had multiple coaching clients tell me that they want people to connect with their art — have a visceral emotional reaction. People often buy art that resonates with them on an emotional level, evoking joy, nostalgia, contemplation, or any other emotional response that enriches their lives.
  5. Personal expression: You probably know that art can be a means of self-expression for the artist. But did you know that it can be a means of self-expression for the collector too?  It's like the clothes you wear or the way you decorate your house.  People hang art that reflects their personality and expresses how they want the world to see them.
  6. Decorative purposes: Art can be seen as a means to enhance the aesthetic appeal of living or working spaces. People may buy art to decorate their homes, offices, or public spaces, seeking pieces that complement their interior design and create a visually engaging environment.  One way to make a living as an artist is to develop strong relationships with successful interior designers. They will purchase and place your work in lots of homes/businesses.
  7. Status and social display: Speaking of personal expression, in certain contexts, owning art can be a symbol of social status or cultural sophistication. People may buy art to enhance their social image or to showcase their taste and knowledge of the art world.  I once went to a party at someone's house that ended up being all about, "guess how expensive this art is because of all the famous artists represented."
  8. Support for artists and the arts: Some kind people purchase art to support artists and contribute to the growth of the artistic community. They value the creative process and recognize the importance of artists in society, making art purchases to encourage and sustain artistic endeavors.  I often get nice notes when people buy my art. Things like, "I've wanted to buy a piece from you for a while. Thanks for all you do to make art accessible to others."

Sometimes, it's a combination of factors that makes somebody buy artwork.

As a buyer of art, I usually am motivated to buy by a combination of aesthetic appreciation, emotional connection, and support for artists and the arts.  That's probably why I feel there must be an emotional connection when people buy my work. But perhaps not?

How about you?  What motivates you to buy original art?

  • My husband and I love to travel, and seek out local artists when we do. The walls of our home are covered with “souvenirs” – art that we found captured a sense of place, or reflected a significant aspect of local/indigenous culture. No interior designer would approve, but we love living with these great memories.

  • This was so great! I’m dragging my feet with starting my own shop. The details are getting me! The paper mailers are a fantastic idea. I have a couple of questions: how do you make your own tape?!?! And, have you had issues with the post office misplacing/losing packages?
    Thanks!!

I have enjoyed watching you create art over the years and have definitely taken inspiration from your process. And your colors! It will be a joy owning one of your pieces. Thank you.
