I've been eyeing the Derwent Push Button Water Brushes for a while now.
The push button seems like such a great idea. When I decided to teach my Sketchbook Habit online class, I determined that I simply *had* to buy the brushes in order to be a good teacher. After all, what if a student asked me about them and I hadn't yet tried them? I was super excited when they arrived, but after trying them out, I have to say: meh.

After filming the video, I did a little bit of internet prowling and read THIS ARTICLE on choosing a watercolor brush and it provided a list of 6 things to note when purchasing a brush:
- Capacity
- Snap
- Point
- Spring
- Flow/Release
- Dump
I feel like the Sakura brush was superior in the areas of flow/release and dump. I was able to paint more evenly and for longer using the Sakura brush. So help me out here. What am I missing about these Derwent brushes?
Sketchbook Habit: Keeping a Visual Diary starts on July 17 and includes lifetime access!
I hope to see you in class. Sign up HERE.
Thanks for stopping by!

I have 4 water brushes, if they’re near I use them but so far like regular watercolor brushes the most. I don’t have the sakura or derwent waterbrushes, like all supplies there’s always more to try. thanks for the derwent review and you’ve talked about enjoying the sakura before

The Derwent brushes were less expensive and that’s why I have several. I don’t think the squeeze part works very well. I have some cheaper water pens that worked beautifully for a long time. Then they started absorbing the paint up into the water container. I had to dedicate them to specific colors. Thanks to your info. I’ll try Sakura.

Interesting info. I have a few water brushes but I’m not sure which brands. both are the squeeze kind. One is harder to squeeze the water and the others are much easier, I think they are Pentel? For a water brush, I think I prefer the easier to squeeze, more water ones. But, if I have a choice, I prefer regular brushes over water brushes (that’s if I’m at home). But on the go? Water brushes are a must for me.

I like the Sakura water brushes so given the demo you did, Julie, I wouldn’t be rushing out to try the Derwent.

I exclusively use water brushes when I’m out and about and don’t have access to water because, like you, I also prefer regular brushes.
