Another wonderful Design Boot Camp has wrapped up! During Design Boot Camp I always spend a lot of time in my Studio Notebook — aka my sketchbook. It's a place to think out loud, experiment, make mistakes, and learn. I rarely share the pages from my studio notebooks for a bunch of different reasons — the biggest is that they're usually pretty ugly. My sketchbook is full of thoughts and ideas, but not finished work. Nevertheless, I thought I'd share a little behind-the-scenes peek into some of the work I created during this round of Design Boot Camp:
As you can see, it's WORKbook, not a gallery of finished art. When you look at the all pretty artwork from other artists online, please remember that you're seeing finished work. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of artists who don't also make lots and lots of scribbles and scratches and notes to get to that pretty picture.
Art involves exercising.
What's the point of an art exercise? What's the point of a push up or a jumping jack? It's a simple skill that you can repeat over and over to help you build up muscle and stamina. Your form may be bad at first, but it will improve with dedicated practice.
And since we've recently wrapped up the Olympics, here's another metaphor: You watch a world class ice skater performing for just a few minutes. But I guarantee you they've spent hours you haven't watched lifting weights, stretching, practicing, falling, and learning. Even top athletes continue to practice and try new things.

Yes! Most disciplines practice and warm up. Why should we expect that we sit down and immediately create a masterpiece? I, for one have created a LOT of ‘bad art’, and continue to do so. It’s all part of the process.
