We are 36 days into The 100 Day Project. About one-third of the way through the whole thing! Woo Hoo!
Here's a peek at what I've been creating:
I decided to count my mural painting towards this 100 day botanical art project:
- The little art journal has been working for me! It's a great size for getting something done in one sitting. Each double page spread is about 11" x 7.25."
- That said, I rarely actually finish a spread in one sitting. When I finish a project, I clean off my brush on an empty page or I throw leftover scraps onto a blank spread. So when I finally sit down to create a page, there's already plenty of "stuff" on the page.
- I've tried some experiments that didn't go well. That's great. I learned some things.
- I've tried some experiments that did go well. That's great. I learned some things.
- I do feel like I'm learning some things about myself. One of which is, I have always used a ton of botanicals. I just haven't used them as focal images.
- For the most part, everything I'm creating is very stylized. They're fake flowers and leaves out of my brain. I'd like to experiment with drawing some actual flowers and leaves. I'd also like to try some very very abstracted botanical images. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like to go in both opposite directions!
- As always, the toughest part of an every day project like this is the sharing. Knowing that I'm going to post what I make puts a lot of pressure on it and I'm often grumpy or unhappy with what I create instead of being pleased that I managed to try something new. I know that it's the wrong attitude and I'm trying to do/be better.
So tell me, how is your 100 Day Project going?
I’m so glad to see your topic today, Julie. I’m new to the 100 Day Project and I’m on Day 28 (not 36) due to life happening :0. I’m glad to be trying new things (especially your #ayearofgelatinprinting class and my own self challenge. But I am not excited about posting unfinished gelli experiments that aren’t great.Posting every day feels good, though, when I see the photos pile up on instagram it feels like a real accomplishment. I’m trying to keep the positive attitude and I’m glad you are honest about how you feel too! (I thought you were superwoman and everything you do looks awesome!)

I’m loving your botanicals, I think I’d like to try this sometime too. I’m having better success with my project this year, yay for me! My strategy this year is working small. I’m painting on 3×3’s and changing themes every so often so I don’t run out of ideas. Sometimes I’ll use extra time to pre draw them to get ahead then just paint the day of, is that cheating?

Similar to Rhonda, I’m on day 23 (no 36) – but I’m not deterred or disheartened by that. I went into this project (a week late, lol) fully primed to give myself grace – and Julie, I owe that to you. You’ve shared SO many tips about how to make the 100 day project work for our individual selves, so I’ve really tailored my approach for what works for ME. For starters, I keep calling mine a #100dayishproject – b/c my goal is 100 pieces in 100ish days.
Another personalization is that I’m posting weekly updates of multiple days on Instagram, rather than individual posts each day. Sharing in batches has taken off the pressure of squeezing art AND a post, with a thoughtful caption, every single day.
Lastly – I’m working small. I’m making a 1.5 inch squares (#100happysquares) and they’re all being glued into a small handmade journal that had been kicking around, completely empty. Similar to you Julie, having 1 dedicated journal feels so good. I love being able to flip through and see the progress grow!

Hey, I’m impressed with anyone doing anything, whether you’re on day 3, 23, or 33. I planned for it, which is further than I’ve ever gotten before. I don’t know if that counts, but I’m giving myself a pat on the back for at least thinking that I might do it. I love the botanicals you are creating – realistic, abstract, paint, paper and anything in between!
