I Made Christmas Cookies! And You Can Make Christmas Crack.

These wreath cookies have got to be some of the simplest and cutest cookies I've ever made.

I didn't have a large circle cookie cutter, so I used a drinking glass.  Necessity is the mother of invention!

If you're interested in doing some baking, but don't want to get out the piping bags, Christmas Crack is one of my favorite things on earth to make.  And it's easy.  Here's the deal:

You will need:

  • crackers – saltines, graham crackers, club crackers, etc.
  • 1 cup of packed brown sugar
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 16 oz chocolate chips

You can add: pretzels, nuts, candy canes, salt, etc.

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.  Lay your crackers out on a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil or parchment paper.

Melt the butter and sugar in a saucepan — over low heat and continually stirring…

…until they are melted together and bubbling.

Pour the sugar and butter mixture over the crackers and spread it with a spatula if necessary.

Put the pan in the oven for 3-5 minutes.  Don't let the mixture burn!  Remove the pan from the oven.

Some people say that you should melt the chocolate chips before applying them.  I don't.  I just sprinkle the chocolate chips over the whole thing and wait a moment.  The sugar and butter mixture is so hot that it melts the chips!  You simply need to wait a moment and then spread them.

Put the pan in the freezer and walk away.

When you come back you can "crack" the contents of the pan into delicious sugary shards!

Enjoy!

  • I’ve made these for years using sliced almonds or pecans. Have to try the chocolate chips for my grandson. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Mmmm, yummy. I see this recipe at Christmastime, but I don’t think I’ve ever made it yet! Do you use semi-sweet chocolate or milk chocolate chips?
