OnTree-wm
Christina Richmond — one of the #CarveDecemberClass teachers — sent me down a rabbit hole this week.  She posted a 3-D star she had made:

I have always loved these 3-D stars.  I even have a few hanging in my studio!

I suppose that I could have followed the link and just used the tutorial Christina shared.  But I'm stubborn.  And I just have to reinvent the wheel sometimes.  As a result, these stars took me hours and hours and hours to make.  Here was my process:

I wanted to make an SVG file so that I wouldn't have to cut the pieces by hand.  I definitely made mistakes — flaps too large, angles not right, perforations that didn't work, no way to close the star, etc. But I persevered.  When I finally got it close enough (done is better than perfect), I carved a stamp to use for the patterning.  I then stamped all the pieces…

…and then assembled them — with a few issues along the way (of course).

But I was pleased with how it turned out overall.

So I decided to try using dark paper and white embossing powder.

Super cute!

So then I decided to skip the stamping and create a lacy cut file based on the stamp I carved.  This one was a bear to fold.  And it was too naked.  After some experimenting, I ended up covering half of the inside with red paper.

I like the way you can both see the design and the structure.

If you're smarter than I am and have no interest in re-inventing the wheel (good for you!) here are links to several different star tutorials/downloads:

If I ever perfect my SVG file, I'll put it in the member classroom for Maker & Super Learner Members.  I don't like to share files that aren't 100% perfect.  Perhaps I'll work on that for New Year's Eve decorations!

  • while the lacy one may have been a pain in the butt, I love the way it turned out. I’m going to try and start with the balls you shared on the live stream.
