Over the weekend I had a ball (pun intended) making yarn pom poms!  (And I looked up the spelling — one word or two — for this blog post and let me tell you, there are a lot of strong opinions, but no clear winner.)

Quite a while ago, I bought some pom pom maker tools with big plans to make a bazillion pom poms for a Christmas garland.  However, I never even took the pom pom makers out of the packaging.

Fast forward to last week.

I decided that it would be super fun to make pom pom earrings!  I consulted with a knitter friend of mine on what kind of yarn to buy and she very kindly sent me a box filled with her yarn remnants.  One maker's trash is another maker's treasure!

On Saturday, I finally took the pom pom makers out of their packaging and read the instructions.  A few minutes later I had a pair of pom pom earrings!

I was so delighted with them that I immediately posted a photo in my instagram stories.  Someone responding by sending me a link to the instagram of @actualworkbyme (Niki Dionne).  She has some fabulous pom poms with faces!  I think she stitches the faces on after making the pom poms, but it lit a burning fire of a question in me.  Can you make pom poms with patterns?

Yes, you can!  I will show you my rough first attempts and then follow them up with some amazing pom poms I found online.  This is what I made on Saturday:

And these are some of the aspirational pom poms I found online — every single source link leads to a step-by-step tutorial:

I can't wait to tackle some of these tutorials!  The alphabet one hurts my brain but also makes me excited.  More pom poms, please!
