USPS Collaborative Art Project

You guys, I found a really interesting art project online that also helps to support the US Postal Service (USPS).  Read all about why we need the USPS.

The project is called "USPS Art Project" and in essentials you create a collaborative artwork with someone.  You create an unfinished piece of art and mail it to them.  They finish it and post the finished work online.  It seemed like total serendipity to find out about this project after wondering (in Friday's post) if I could swap an entire sketchbook with someone.  A single piece of half-finished art seems like much lower stakes!

Here's the original post:

This image is embedded from instagram. If you can't see it, click HERE.

I posted this image in my instagram stories over the weekend and made a deal to do this project with 5 different people I don't know at all.  I'm very excited for the swap and will be sure to share along the way!

If you're interested in participating in this project, try posting about it online or reaching out to some art friends you know in real life.  Or leave a comment in the comments section of this blog and see if anyone else wants to team up!  I think it's going to be fun!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • If I lived in the US, I would have loved to participate! What a great idea. Post card prices are far less than an envelope. I live your advocacy.

  • Thanks for this Julie! My Mom lives in the US while I’m in Canada and it sucks not being able to see her right now. This is a great project for us to share while supporting the postal service. We’re going to do it together. 🙂

  • I truly hoped this wouldn’t happen but I’ve seen little hints creeping into your posts recently. I was hoping politics wouldn’t have to come into this precious creative world but it seems like nowadays that’s impossible.
The article you linked was not entirely factual and was framed in such a way as to make all the problems of the USPS seem to be the fault of conservatives. In addition there were multiple Trump-bashing articles advertised on the page.
I just want to read your posts and enjoy your art, ideas, and teaching without having politics interjected. I guess that is a fantasy.
Thank you for all you share that does NOT promote an agenda.

  • So typical of liberals. Because we don’t agree politically we can’t share anything? Very sad bc I enjoy 99% of everything you post and share but bc I disagree with you on issues that have absolutely nothing to do with art you ask me to unsubscribe?

  • Gina, you and I disagree on issues that 100% have everything to do with art. To think otherwise would be both naive and disingenuous. Art is not a pretty picture on the wall. It’s an expression of how one views the world.
Further, I would posit that the divide between us has nothing to do with politics. You are clearly angry and have used the word “liberal” as a very generalized slur. That’s your right. Just as it is my right to post absolutely anything I want to my blog — politics, conversations about race, negative articles about Donald Trump.
As a side note, rather than label my views as “typical liberal” and easy to ignore, you might be interested to know that I have voted for Republicans. My issue with Donald Trump and his supporters are not political. They’re ethical and moral. And this is where we will never see eye-to-eye.
I asked you to unsubscribe as a quick and easy way to diffuse the situation. You are not going to change my mind and I’m not going to change your mind, so what’s the use of arguing about it? I don’t plan to stop sharing my views on the world anytime soon and if they’re offensive to you, you should stop reading this blog.
I hope you can either (a) take what is useful to your from this blog and ignore the rest, or (b) unsubscribe and be at peace with that choice. Mostly, I’d like you to think about why you feel entitled to tell me what is okay to post to my own blog? And yet you’re offended when I ask you to unsubscribe?
To yell at a complete stranger on the internet about a very mild issue, such as support of the post office, seems to me to be evidence of a great deal of personal discomfort. I hope you find peace within yourself and the choices you’ve made.

  • Couple things…
I never “yelled” at anyone, either in my writing or in person. I am not a loud person and don’t believe yelling helps anything. Ever.
I am not an angry person. I also did not ask or tell you what you should or should not write on your own blog.
I did not use the word “liberal” as a slur. I simply used it to indicate what I perceived your political views to be at the moment. I apologize if you are a conservative.
I agree that art is our own view of the world but of all the years I’ve followed you and enjoyed your teaching, writing, creativity, and inspiration, I have never heard you interject your political views into your tutorials or posts.
I was not surprised or offended that you asked me to unsubscribe. It is usually the first thing someone who does not handle disagreement will say. It feels like you may actually be the angry one in this conversation.
I will continue to follow your blog bc I believe you are incredibly talented and very inspiring. I have your book, a dvd, several of your products, and look forward to your posts. I am grateful that you share your knowledge with the world.
I believe art can be a uniter rather than a divider but I also think people have a right to respectfully disagree about things. I hope you can understand I meant no disrespect…only to let you know the article you linked wasn’t entirely factual.
I do hope you don’t require everyone Around you or who follows you on social media to be “on the same page” as you. How sad if we can only learn from those who think exactly as we do and I learn a great deal from you. For that I thank you.

  • I, too, agree with your response Julie! And just so you don’t think you’re going crazy, I interpreted both comments the same way you did.

  • Let’s be little more respectful. I guess I am not going to be doing this project after all if someone can’t nicely disagree with your politics.

  • I just stumbled across your blog while searching for information about stamp carving and I’m so glad I did. You are an inspiring artist with a heart and conscience are strong and an articulate writer. Happy to read whatever you choose to write on your blog.
