As you know, I'm working on 100 Days of Gelatin Printing.  So, I thought it would be a good idea for me to share the tools I've been using every day to make my gelatin prints.

Gelatin Plate.

I don't have a brand preference.  I use both Gelli Arts and Gel Press plates.  I bought a Speedball plate a while ago, but I never opened the package.  (I should probably give it a try!)  My favorite size is 8×10, but I'll confess to having a dozen plates in different sizes.  You absolutely can make your own plate.  But, I prefer the ease of the store bought versions.

Speedball Rubber Brayer.

Two-inch is my fave, but I do use different sizes, depending on what I'm doing and the size of the plate I'm working with.

Speedball Baren.

When I'm pulling a lot of prints or using thick materials to print, the baren saves my hands.  I use it to push down the paper onto the plate.

Deli Paper.

I go through sheets and sheets of deli paper during a printing session.  I use the paper to clean my brayer and the gelatin plate.  After the deli paper is dry, I use it in my art projects.

Acrylic Paint.

I don't have a particular brand that I use every time, but I tend to mostly use Liquitex Basics and Golden Fluid Acrylics.  I've recently added some Blick Studio acrylics that I'm really enjoying for printing as well.  I have used Golden Open Acrylics for particular kinds of prints, but I find the long open time annoying for the kind of layered prints I like to create.  You'll notice that my paint is in a little box.  I've been making an effort to maintain a somewhat limited palette for these prints.

Paper.

Nothing fancy around here.  I'm using regular white cardstock for all of my prints.

Stencils and Masks.

I think that all of my prints thus far have included some kind of stencil or mask.  Some of them are handmade.  Some of them are Balzer Designs stencils and masks from The Crafter's Workshop.  When I hand cut stencils, I usually just use paper — everything from copy paper to file folders is fair game around here.

I hope you found that information helpful!  If you want to learn about the basics of Gelatin Printing, I do have an online class all about it.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Thanks for the inspiration — I need ro find my Gelli plate and try some of these great ideas.
Quite a few years back I made a gelatin plate from real gelatin. A lot of work and doesn’t last that long. But totally wonderful to get accurate and detailed prints of real leaves etc. I’m really glad I did it once at least!

  • I find that when I print on my deli paper the paint comes, crumbles off easily especially when put it into a journal. Does that happen to you? Love your prints and stencils. Thank you for breaking it all down.

  • Possibly you’re putting too much paint on the gel plate? I’ve used very cheap paints with no problem on deli paper. Try watering down your paint.
Also try brayering on inks. They look invisible on the plate, but they will print.
Are you sure you aren’t using wax paper instead? Because that might cause paint to peel.
    Just some random thoughts.
