Today I'm sharing the gelatin printing I've done over the last 7 days.  Some good.  Some bad.  Some struggles.  Some victories.  Check it out (These images are embedded from instagram.  If you can't see them, click HERE.):

Some thoughts:

  • These are more time consuming than I intended.  I may have to (a) set a time limit, (b) use a smaller plate, or (c) work on a print over a few days.  After all, I did say it was 100 Days of Gelatin Printing, not Finished Prints.  We shall see.
  • I'm actually running out of paint.  I mean, I still own plenty of paint.  But I'm actually throwing empty tubes away.  It's amazing.  Looks like I'm going to have to do some online shopping!!!
  • I definitely have some "oldies but goodies" stencils in my stash that I just loooove for printing.  And I've been dragging them out.  I suspect that my next round of stencils for the Crafter's Workshop will be very oriented towards gelatin printing….  I'm definitely planning on cutting a few new prototypes based on some ideas that I have!
  • My favorite prints from this week are the ones that use a primary palette.  I often try to get away from that triad of yellow, blue, and red…but I can't!  I love it so.
  • I'm developing some gelatin printing "cheats."  You know, the go-to saves that rescue a print every single time.  That's a good sign.  It's what a daily project like this almost always ends up doing to me.  I develop a bag of tricks.

Before I go, I wanted to share this video I put together, which explains the very basics of what gelatin printing is:

  • Hi Julie,
Love your gelli prints and would really love to have the gelli print class you were going to run at home (in those wonderful pre-COVID days) become an on-line class. Such a subtle hint…

  • Wow! they are great – I struggle so much with making gelli prints – they almost all come out looking like messy blurs of color – glad to hear you’re learning too and will pass on your knowledge!
