I recently participated in Cloth Paper Scissors "Road Test" section, where they ask artists to make something with a particular product.  They sent me a roll of red Kraft-Tex

Kraftex
I had experimented with Kraft-Tex a few times before.  It's a fascinating product.  It's paper, but you can wash it and sew it like fabric.  It has some similarities to leather in appearance.  It doesn't tear and it takes paint easily.  A lot of people use it for bags and journal covers.

If you know me, you know that I always want to do something different.  I wanted to make something that took advantage of all of Kraft-Tex's unusual qualities.  After sitting and thinking for a while, I decided to make a decorative bowl — creating the bowl shape by stitching.

I used my Dramatic Floral stencil to create a pattern inside the bowl, but I left the outside plain.

I love the way it turned out!  You can find step-by-step instructions as well as other artist's experiments with Kraft-Tex in the current (and final) issue of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • So beautiful. I just love how your mind works that you can take something like a plain piece and think of making into a beautiful bowl! Amazing!! So sad that Cloth Paper Scissors will no longer be around. When the magazine first came out, I was so excited! I think Stampinton Magazines took the idea and went further causing real competition. It is still so sad. A lovely project for th eir final issue!!

  • I like using Kraftex. I had not seen the red color and I really like what you did with it. I am sorry too, about the ending of Cloth Paper Scissors. I enjoyed it for many years, but after Kate Prado left as the full editor, I didn’t read the magazine as much. I still have some old issues, I will hang on to them now.

  • Could you please tell me where/how can I buy the current issue? What is the number, or edition, please? The link is for a subscription; and I’m not sure if the edition in the photo is the edition you’re referring to. Thank you!
