While I was hiking through the heat of Spain, I kept wishing I had some kind of sunshade, like a parasol. Well, I walked into my local thrift store a few days after I got back home and found a plain white parasol!
It was stained in several places, but I figured I was going to paint it anyway.
I began with some black acrylic ink.
I had been thinking of leaving it black and white, but the acrylic ink bled more than I expected…
…so I decided to fix the mess with color.
At this point, I decided that it wasn't quite finished. It needed another layer of pattern!
I added loads of pattern and also decided to color the center — I had originally been toying with leaving it white. I'm glad I painted it!
And tada!
I love the way it turned out! I love the fact that you can see the pattern right through the underside of the umbrella!
This was a super fun project and I look forward to shielding myself from the sun in the most colorful way possible!

Just WOW!!! I’m so glad the black ink bled…the resulting colorful parasol is incredible. I can seriously imagine it in one of the museums you feature for us. Great, great job. How long did it take to paint it? Definitely worth it, both the $$$ and the time. Wonderful!!!

I really love it when you take common articles and create art with them. It’s thinking outside of the box. You can also hang it from the ceiling with small lights behind it and create an awesome lampshade – and keep it on display all the time!
