When I was teaching in San Jose in January, I prowled around A Work of Heart, looking for goodies to buy! Owner, Andrea, stocked a kind of spray ink I had never heard of: Lindy's Stamp Gang. She spoke very highly of it. Andrea said it was highly pigmented and the most shiny spray she had ever encountered. I'll confess, I pooh-poohed her recommendation.
A week later, I was at CHA and saw the Lindy's Stamp Gang booth. Serendipity! I approached the booth and started a conversation. I had assumed they were a new company, but it turns out that they've been making spray ink of all kinds since 2000. After a nice long chat — I've actually visited the small town they're based in many times — they were kind enough to offer to send me some spray ink to try out.
The first thing to note is that they ship the bottles without any liquid. There's just powder inside and you add water. Super smart! The bottles are lighter and there's no way for anything to go bad or leak.
I played around with the spray inks on some tags:
As promised, the colors are very intense:
And there is a lot of shimmer:
The colors mix together beautifully:
The ink is slightly water reactive after it's dry:
And the color does float up through gesso (even after dry):
When I play with a new product I like to explore what makes it special. Tags are a great way to do that exploring. I've also been playing with the sprays in my art journal and on canvas, mixing them with the supplies I already use.
Finally, it's always a good idea to go online and see what other people are saying and doing.
Of note:
- I discovered that there are three different kinds of spray ink offered by Lindy's Stamp Gang. (You can watch this video to see the difference.) I was sent the Starburst Sprays. Apparently they're the most pigmented, so that suits me to a tee!
- Check out the Lindy's Gang You Tube channel for lots of great tutorials.
- You can see some examples of projects made with the different sprays here. Also some good information on mixing the water in. (I didn't follow the directions — ooops!)
- This is a super cute scrapbook page (with a video) made from the sprays. And another cautionary tale about mixing in tap water. Oh well.
- A seriously intense comparison — there's even a spreadsheet — comparing homemade mists, Glimmer Mist, and Perfect Pearls to Lindy's.
Have you tried Lindy's Stamp Gang Sprays? Thoughts?
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Just to be clear, Lindy's Stamp Gang sent me the sprays, but they didn't ask me to blog about it. That was my choice. I love to share to my arting adventures with you!

I bought them a while ago but I had trouble getting them to work. I added water and shook them but they kept getting clogged and I couldn’t get them to spray well. I will try again after seeing your blog!!

Love them….the clogging could have to do with minerals in unfiltered tap water…not always, though I personally have not had an issue since using filtered water. Julie..you can also buy a pot of just the pigments so you can mix my own concentration of sprays,Mix colors, make acrylic paint or water colors. My favorite way to use them by far 🙂

Yes I have. The colors are great but it’s not only the color you get because some or even all of them are are two toned in color & in the shimmer. I kind of wish that the shimmer & the color matched because I feel that having two tones on your project is great but it also it changes the look of the project which some may or may not want. The flat fabios are really pigmented with no shimmer. You also have to be careful with the sprays getting clogged.

I love that you feature the products you use along with tips, examples. I have a love/hate relationship with sprays and it’s because I don’t know enough about how to use them or how they work so it’s a bit frustrating. The links you provided were stellar … thank you so much, hopefully this will give me courage to try, try again! Adore your blog … thanks!

I haven’t had any problem with the sprays getting clogged but I do use bottled distilled water since I live in a place with highly mineralized water. I filter my drinking water too. Also love the little pots of pigment which gives so many options. thanks as always for sharing.

I have been using LSG sprays and mica powders for a couple years now. They are my favorites. I have had absolutely no problems with the sprayers getting clogged or mold but I used distilled water. Each type of spray offers a different look. I love the embossing powders also. I also love the fact that you can get daubers for the bottles if you decide you don’t want to spray.

Beautiful examples. Love the intense colors. I use gesso a lot so really like the application you did with that. I really like the idea of shipping them dry and adding your own water. Echoing what several have said, always use distilled water when making your own sprays, even if thinning acrylic paints.

These sound so interesting! I love intense colors, just have to put in a little even in some more muted pieces! Then sometimes I just throw open my inner color gates and let it flow! LOL! This line of sprays would be a great choice for air travel, no liquid, light weight…$$$$ these days! Might just have to try out some! Thanks for the into!

Ive used Lindys for a couple of years now and they are fabulous, plus they are the two toned colors in the starburst and so many beautiful colors. You must try the flat fabios, they are also highly pigmented and the color shots paint pots and they have embossing powders that are two toned to match the sprays and moon shadows for a vintage look. And if you have a problem with a bottle being clogged, just drop Tracy an email and she will send you replacement spray tops free of charge. They really are a great company that was originally started by her mom and Tracy took over when her mother passed in her of her moms vision.
PS Also love the new Prima color blooms if you have not tried those yet, they have 22 colors so far with trigger sprayers that are great!!

I have some of LSG sprays and have not used them to their potential as yet. I have been following them and their blog for a while and love their colors. Just one question, I cant really tell whether you love the product or not, or just ok? thanks, Sue

P.S. Julie a few months back you did a week of free tutorials with different topics. One day was stenciling and I never finished the entire week. Can you tell me where I can find the group of tuts you gave us. I had such fun that week and would like to finish the videos. Thanks.

Magical. Used several different types on metal parts of a distressed book cover. Literally screamed for joy and astonishment at the brilliance of the colors/coverage. Jack Frost is awesome. Found out about these products from Creating Lasting Memories in Brookings, Oregon {a scrapbooking jewel on the Oregon coast right above California state line.) Always love your art Julie.

I’ve been using LSG for a few months now and I have not had any problems with clogging, or anything. I have filtered water at the kitchen sink so I heat it in the microwave, be sure to let it sit 10 minutes before you shake it. I use them as awesome backgrounds for journaling and scrapping and for painting elemenets. Gotta love them!!

I have been using Lindy’s products(every type of spray, powdered pigment, embossing powder) for over a decade. There was a problem with the spray bottles clogging, and Lindy’s instituted a policy of replacing them with new style spray bottles that don’t clog. If you return the bottles, Lindy’s replaces the entire product, powder and bottle. The newer sprays work like a charm. Also, Lindy’s now also offers Flat Fabios, beautiful color sprays with no shimmer. I love it that they now produce embossing powders that match their sprays. Check out Lindy’s YouTube channel for great demonstrations. I don’t work for the company –just love it!

Have a number of Lindy’s Sprays and LOVE them. They really stand behind their product, too. At one time they got bad batch of sprayers, they replaced them at no cost. Intense colors, although they do have pastels too. And the SHIMMER and SHINE is WOW….just LOVE ’em. (I also have some Perfect Pearls, Tattered Angles and homemade, none of them compare to Lindy’s). No don’t work for ’em, not on any design teams, don’t know anyone who is, just love their product! Oh be sure to check out the Moonshadows, 2 tone with a brown base and different colored micas…incredible!!

No don’t work for ’em, not on any design teams, don’t know anyone who is, just love their product! Oh be sure to check out the Moonshadows, 2 tone with a brown base and different colored micas…incredible!!

I am looking for sprays that are permanent.. that I do not have to seal before going on to another layer. Are these the ones???

When mixing the LSG sprays for the first time you should use warm water, Boil the kettle with fresh water then let it cool so it is still warm but not hot, this makes sure that the water is free of contaminants, & placing a round plastic bead in the bottle helps prevent clumping of the mica & pigments. I made my own sprays by adding 100ml yellow liquid water colour, gold mica powder & interference mica powder ( 2 tone ) to 100 ml of warm water. I suppose if you used acrylic ink instead of liquid watercolour it would be permanent.
AND a squirt of pva water based glue so the mica sticks to the paper.
