I made it to 100. I made it kicking and screaming, but I made it.
Some thoughts:
- I'm proud of myself. Really really proud of myself. There wasn't a single day that I let this project drop. For 100 consecutive days I challenged myself to make a face and film the process. In hotel rooms, on set, at home, during sick days, when I didn't want to, when I was out of ideas, at 11:30pm — all of those days, I made it happen.
- I'm so glad it's over. I still love faces. I still love creating things. I still love sharing my process. But I am delighted to not have "make a face, film it, edit the video, post it" on my to do list every single day.
- I grew. I think I grew. I feel like I grew. I certainly gained some confidence. I know this sounds crazy, but I've never felt like I could draw. Every time I manage to create something that vaguely looks like I want it to, I'm impressed. This project reminded me that the ability to draw is a skill you can gain with practice. We all can draw. We just need to practice.
- I don't know if I would do it again. But, you know I say that every single time I finish a major project. Give me a few months and maybe I'll change my mind? Or maybe once in a lifetime is fine with me? There are those people who run a marathon once in their lives and there are those who make it a lifestyle. I'm not sure which type I am yet.
- 100 days is very different from 31 days. For several years I've been doing "Carve December" — carving a stamp every day in December. I figured that 100 days wouldn't feel that different from 31. After all, I've done other month-long daily projects like lettering and patterning and scrapbooking. I figured I had some good art muscles and good art discipline. However, this project really tested me. I would do another month-long project without hesitation. 100 days is three months plus some.
- It's amazing how long and how short 15 minutes is. You can do so much in 15 minutes using some techniques, like a ballpoint pen or markers. You run out of time doing techniques like collage or anything with layers. But knowing how much I can accomplish in 15 minutes reminds me that making art every day is absolutely possible.

Amazing Julie, it’s been very cool watching what you drew everyday and seeing how much creativity can be pushed. I’ve often thought about a commitment challenge and … I’m still thinking but… I just might have to give it a go. Thanks for sharing your ups and downs. Your honesty is inspirational.

So many different types of faces. Love them all. I stopped at 80 for two reasons. 1: My book ended up only having 80 pages. 2: I ran out of ideas. You can see my faces if you look up @mcmgrad89 or #someonestolemy100dayhashtag
I will finish them as soon as I figure out where I’m putting them.

This is the first vlog that I have watched. How delightful to see what happens in your busy life Julie. I think that the part where you and your Mom are in the car is a riot! I admire that you completed the 100 face project and I really like the last face (and his expressive mouth).

I am absolutely in love with #100 too (seems to be the general consensus!) This was my 2nd year doing #the100dayproject and I totally agree with you on so many levels – I did miss one day, but food poisoning can put you way out of commission! It does feel great that I completed a second year, but I am also glad it is over – it is a big commitment and I am ready to try something different (of course the day I finished was the first day of Rae Missigman’s #30daysofartmarks and it is such a welcome departure from what I was doing.) I also felt that I have grown – I look back at the beginning of this year and also what I did last year and I am so pleased with my progress. You have 8 months before you have to decide about next year – I’m on the fence at the moment, but I have a feeling that will change when the talk about this project starts up again in March. Thank you again for sharing Julie!!!

I am so proud of you! I don’t remember you ever talking as much about not wanting to complete a commitment you made (even if that commitment is with yourself) than with these 100 faces. Congratulations! On finishing the task and on the growth you’ve made! To me your portfolio of faces has multiplied exponentially. To me the faces are far more diverse than I’ve seen over the past. Maybe because you were doing them everyday you were more conscious of not making today’s face to close in appearance To yesterday’s. I love the very last painting! That boy with his white tie has such a spirit coming through. Yet he is done very much in the style that you paint. Although he is immediately recognizable as a Julie original he doesn’t look like any face painting I can recall you ever doing. There were several of the sketches that I really liked too, but that little boy makes me happy!

Sorry to be extra wordy today but I just did a quick look through all the faces from the beginning. To me it seems that you are changing and growing and learning right around face 41. Maybe I’m nuts but that’s what I think I see. There seems to be a paradigm shift right around there.

#100 is perfection. A culmination of styles, colors and formats has produced a delightful image. Better than the original photo/picture. Great subject.

The painting of the boy is a brilliant culmination of the project. Like others, I’ve followed your journey and have seen you move into more expressive faces, faces that have a mood, faces that are not “pretty” so much as being “real”. Kudos to you for realizing that the difficulty of continuing the project partially reflected the uncertainty we feel when learning is taking place. It takes courage to be in that space for 100 days, not to mention exhibiting every step. Thanks for sharing the journey. It inspires.
