If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.
Today I've got three more daily pages. All of them were built on backgrounds that I didn't want to cover up too much. You'll see that I treated each of the three backgrounds slightly differently in my quest to preserve them.
One of the greatest gifts my art journaling habit has given to me is the bravery to cover stuff up. I used to get scared and upset by it, but nowadays I realize that there will always be another beautiful background. Further, I often like the partially covered up result more than the original. And that does tend to make you braver! :)
Take a peek:
For this page, I simply glued a face drawing sample I had sketched in a class (never throw anything away!) on top of this Art Foamies background.
I love the contrast of the stark black and white on top of the busy and colorful background.
The original background is what you see trapped inside those handprints. You can see that I painted over everything else. This is what the original looked like:
Quite a transformation, right?!
This is multiple tracings of the Zia Sun Bit:
A gold paint pen will always be one of my go-to art journaling tools. It doesn't always pop in photos, but when you flip through the pages, that gold really catches your eye!
On this art journal page I sketched a face on top of the painted marks behind and really did almost no shading or highlighting.
I'll be back next week with more pages to share!
Finally, I'm looking for some folks who are interested in doing art journaling guest posts this Fall. Yay! You're the right person for the job if:
- You have a particular art journaling technique you'd like to share. It can be simple or complex; beginner level or advanced; old or new.
- You can deliver a step-by-step tutorial on that technique either via video or photo step-outs.
- You can deliver bright and clear photos that are resized to 500px wide.
If you're interested, send an email to balzerdesigns2@gmail.com with your name, link to your blog, instagram, or youtube channel, a brief description of the technique you'd like to share, and a photo of a page from your art journal that uses that technique.
Thanks for stopping by!

Two things I am “afraid of-” neon and metallics. But I do love the gold in your sun. It gives it a je ne sais quoi. The faces are mesmerizing, too.

I love that nothing is sacred in your art! It’s something I struggled with for awhile until taking your JJ class. Now all bets are off lol
Dropped you an email 😉

I want the last face sketch as a print … it is fabulous, just keep staring at it! Love looking at your art journal … can’t wait to take your online class, waiting till holidays when I can focus! Still practicing things learned in Austin class and hoping you come back next year. Will definitely recommend some better eating spots … I agree with you 1000% on comments about Salt Lick!
