The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art had been closed for a year or two for remodeling and it recently re-opened. I was delighted to have the opportunity to see the new building and the artwork when I was in San Francisco last week. Unlike any museum I've ever been to, SFMoMA requires timed tickets for entry (even for members). Perhaps as a result, it was fairly empty, even on a Saturday. Take a peek:
We were lucky enough to stumble into a tour of the Calder collection. You can see the guide in on of the photos above. Most of the work was easily identifiable as Calder, except for this fish tank (which I love):
The red photos above are of the ladies room!!
These large scale abstract collages of Frank Stella's (above) blew me away. I'm not usually a huge fan of his work, but I fell in love with these pieces, unlike many collectors (read the information below):
One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was an interactive photo machine.
There's a big light table and as you can see from the photo of me doing it (two photos above), anything you block out with a solid object becomes see through for the camera. The exhibit is called #selfcomposed and you can read about it here.
There was a video piece by the artist above that I loved. It involved projecting an image onto a miniature stage at the same time that the film was running in the background.
These last two items are from the gift shop. It was a nicely curated shop and I liked how they told you a bit about the artist and the inspiration for the piece(s).
I didn't quite make it through the entire museum (my family wanted to leave after a while), but I saw most of it and now you have too!
