Every Friday on this blog we talk about art journaling and my belief that every artist should have a daily art journal practice — even if it’s just for 10 minutes a day. It has been transformative for me and I hope it will be for you too!

Anyone out there looking for some fresh inspiration for your art journaling practice?  I know that new ideas always get my brain excited!  Here are five awesome ideas that are so seriously simple!  Their simplicity makes them easy to try right away — like right now!

IDEA #1 via the Fiskars blog:

Replace the pencil in a compass with a paintbrush = easy to paint circles!

IDEA #2 via the Creating Keepsakes blog:

Make prints with textured paper towel! Simply paint the paper towel and press it to your paper.

IDEA #3 via the Faber-Castell blog:

Use a palette knife and a water mister instead of a wet brush to blend your watercolor pencils! I really thought that was paint! Amazing that it’s watercolor pencil!

IDEA #4 via the Alisa Burke blog:

Who needs a gelatin plate?! Use a plastic bag to create monotypes. This is similar to the paper towel trick. Simply paint on the plastic bag and the press it to your paper!

IDEA #5 via the One Lucky Day blog:

Rub Distress Ink pads onto a stencil, spritz the stencil with water, and then press the wet stencil to paper = awesome multi-colored stencil print!

I love it when good ideas are so simple!  I hope you’ll give one of these simple techniques a try in your art journal!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Cool ideas. Especially the one using plastic bags to make monoprints. I’m always looking for new ways to use those dreaded plastic bags.
Curse the person who came up with that brilliant idea.
Their here to stay. I wish someone would invent one that would just evaporate after use. Yea maybe dunk in water and it just go away. There’s tons of ways to use them but only us crafters go that far with um. Everyone else leaves um to blow in wind and hang from trees all mangled and halloweeny looking.
I’ve crocheted a rug using plastic bags.
Apologize for my ramblings on about plastic bags and thank you for another way I can use the ones I get when my fabric bag isn’t available. Your awesome.
