I carry a notebook in my purse. It's useful for drawing, writing down notes, or simply keeping myself entertained. I like to decorate my notebooks — why not carry some art with you? Usually I simply doodle or paint on them. Today, I decided to go for **fabulous** and decorated my new notebook with embossed metal tape. It's easy and the results are fab! Watch the video for the how-to:
And here is my fabulous notebook:
In the video I mentioned trying this same technique, but using PanPastels instead of Perfect Pearls. I tried it out using the 12×12 Believe Script stencil.
As you can see, I only wrapped the metal tape part way around this notebook as it's a bit larger than the one I used in the video.
Here are the two notebooks together:
I also used these same two stencils (Believe Script and Striped Flower Circles) on this scrapbook page:
I love how versatile stencils are! You can barely tell that they're the same stencils I used for metal embossing.
If you would like to win both the Striped Flower Circle and Believe Script stencils, leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this post:
What's your best art-making tip? It can be something somebody told you, something you read in a book, or something you have discovered yourself!

The best art-making tip I ever received was “just start”. Doesn’t matter if it’s paint, pencil, stamps, stencils or whatever the thing is to start. Don’t let the blank page stop you.

Yes, just start. Also to embrace mistakes, nothing in life is perfect. As soon as I accepted that, and my lack of true talent, I made page after page. I would love these stencils in my collection, thank you for a chance to win. Michelle t

loved the method. found the video very helpful. why not just scribble with the orange stick if you don’t have the right stencil. My best art tip is, was and will be always: use what you have on hand. Allows one to work on an inspiration immediately and not wait till an order comes in. If it doesn’t work, it gives you knowledge and experience. Love your blog and daily e-mail. Good job.

My best tip is: “Don’t ask for approval.” That one’s hard for me, because I always want people to like what I do, but not asking people if they like my art has made me more confident in my own judgment.

Someone shared how they always keep 2 or 3 tags off to the side of the page they are working on in their art journal and use them to roll excess paint, or “clean” ink off a stencil, or try a stamp, stick those extra pieces of washi, whatever … when you are done with your art journal page, you also have decorated tags that incorporate some of the same materials/supplies/techniques you used on the page … I started doing this and have a great stash of really cool/unique tags to use in my art journal, on a gift, in my planner, whatever. I have them hanging on a ring on my wall, useful and decorative!

My best art tip is “set a timer.” Sometimes I only have 15 minutes to work on a page and without the timer I get distracted and start playing with other materials for a different project.

I think my best tip, well not mine alone, would be to Recycle, Reuse, Refurbish, Reduce.
Especially if your like myself and live on a budget.
There’s a lot of great “Stuff” out there that can be turned into beautiful works of art.
So my tip is next time you get ready to throw that packaging away or ya eat the last egg in an egg carton take a good look at it before you throw it in the recycle bin and see if you can come up with a way to use it in your art first.

Mine will always be to just give it a go. It doesnt matter if it doesnt work out – just give it a go! You might hate the result, but you just might love it too!

I love your videos! So upbeat and informative…
My best art tip is to always have some art supplies around where you sit, especially if you’re prone to veg in front of the tv or like to binge watch tv series. I got this tip from another artist – she suggested having a small art box where you sit by the tv so you can pick up the box and journal whenever you’re binge watching and make art at the same time. It has really helped me make art more often because I want to hang with the family and I can do that and play with my journal at the same time.

I like all the tips already shared, and I think using what you gave, experimenting with what you have and trying things out without worrying about making something perfect is the most important. I take a painting class, and my teacher said just this week to keep working through the stuff you don’t like to get it to a place that you do like and you’ll learn a lot along the way.

Love your wee books. Nice! technique, My best art tip is to follow your fingers and see where they lead you and enjoy the practice of being totally present. No judging, assessing or evaluating even occurs in this state. Thank you, Ju’ie.

The best art tip I learned was to ‘work through the ugly’. I find when I am working on something that isn’t working or turning out the way I thought, I think “work through the ugly” and it gets me to the other side and keeps me going. Love your art, your inspiration, your creative mind!!!!

The best art making tip I ever received was “In mixed media, there are NO rules”.
I live by this mantra of no rules because without rules there are no mistakes just opportunities to explore and expand.
Really looking forward to your visit to Montreal this weekend.
See you Sunday!!!

My best tip is to have courage and create. Doesn’t matter what medium, how much time, or any other circumstance, just create!! “Have courage and be kind!” From the movie Cinerella. Cinderella’s Mom told Cinderella on her deathbed. Love that phrase.
You have the greatest videos and suggestions. Thanks so much.

My tip came from my first art teacher. She told us that most art goes through an “ugly” stage and that we should forge ahead and it will get better. My translation of that is to keep on making art even if things are not “beautiful…….it will always be a learning experience.

The best tip I have ever heard is “just do it!” I love where mistakes can take a project. I also love that “pile” of mistakes that can be used in a different project – especially paper and paint! These are wonderful notebooks, Julie! Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful techniques!

My best tip: get up and walk around. Look at your work from a distance, prop it up against a wall, turn it upside down, etc. Sometimes I spend so much time leaning over a project on my table and a change of perspective is all I need to send me on a new and often better path. Plus, a few minutes of exercise every so often is good for my health!

Organize!Organize!Organize I’m fairly new to art & I love it however I found I was spending more time trying to find a particular item(stencil, marker etc) than I was creating. Now everything has it’s place and I’m more productive with my precious creative time.

Best art tip (which I’m pretty sure came from Julie) is to have to have several “to go” bags ready that you can grab before you head out the door for errands that involve “wait” time. I like to fill a bag with stamped images, a coloring medium (pencils, markers, small set of watercolors and a water brush) along with scissors. Waiting doesn’t seem so bad when I’m busy coloring and cutting!

because I’m a numbers girl – an accountant – I “want” things to be symmetrical, to be even, to match. years ago a very artistic friend told me to use odd numbers – to NOT be symmetrical, even or matching. I struggle against that tendency & hear her voice as I try to overcome it! so simple & so difficult for me.

Hi, Julie,
The best art tip I receive over and over through my progression from novice to intermediate levels of artistry in any form is “there are no mistakes, trust yourself!!!!” The tools and techniques are very important to the creation of art BUT the most important tools are your own intuition and energy.

best tips…oh my! so many great tips as artists are sharers. what got me started was advice to befriend my “critic” take her for a walk and create while she’s out of the “room” (of my mind). otherwise, a tip i use all the time is vaseline on the jar rim…it saves me a lot of frustration!

My mom sold furniture for many, many years. She really developed an eye for placing furniture in a room and adding accessories. When I moved into my first apartment and was outfitting it with this and that she told me that adding “a little bit of black” would pull everything together. It works in my art, too. 🙂 Thanks, Mom!

Many others have mentioned this (probably because it is so important) but the best advice I have had is to just make art. Don’t wait for inspiration or approval.

Embrace the surprise – and don’t be afraid to use lots of paper in your work – whether it be using the gelli plate or in my case an etching press. Only with experimenting will you get that special result that you are looking for and after all it is only paper.

The best art tip I ever got was – There will always be another piece of ephemera. For a long time I was hung up on not using things I had accumulated, especially if I’d spent a bit of money on it, like a fancy paper or a unique vintage photo — but they weren’t doing any good sitting in storage so I started just using them, originals and all! I figure, if there’s something I really love and want to use again, i can always make a copy of the art I made with the original. And I will always find new stash! Truth be told, there are very few images I have wanted to use more than once.

I’m fairly new at Mix Media and Art Journaling and I am really enjoying it. What I have learned is no matter what mistakes you think you made, if you keep going you usually wind up with a “happy mistake” result. My motto is “It doesn’t matter”. That’s a hard one for me but I realized if the art wants to take you in a different direction, go with it. In the end it turns out to be a pleasant surprise. I get a lot of inspiration from you blog. Thank you

When I was first introduced to alcohol inks (about 2001), one of the instructors at a local stamping group offered a challenge-make something out of a vertical blind. I immediately thought of AI! I made earrings and a pendant. Just cut out your shape with scissors, sand the edges and punch a hole at the top. Color the material with your favorite colors. You can use a felt pad or just let the ink do it’s thing. Attach jewelry findings. You can also attach beads, seed beads, make a design with hot glue, or stencil.

A great art tip I received in reading this blog is to use cut out paper figures from magazines, either as a stencil or as a collage element, on a mixed media journal page. It is utterly simple and it’s a moment where I thought “duh”, but life is fun like that, with moments of connecting the simple dots. I am working on an art quilt using a photograph of Macchu Picchu with my friends in the foreground, wondering if the same technique will work on fabric. Thanks for your daily tips and beautiful creations, Julie.

Work on a few or many pieces/versions at a time. For example: when I start working on paper I have a whole stack of many different types at the ready to paint on. Your initial idea may not look quite what was imagined on the white paper, but the yellow paper looks great.
This also frees up your hand makes more paper for other projects.

The best advice I was given by an art teacher 50 years ago was be yourself, it doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing do your own thing, after all its only a piece of paper.
Love your sense of fun and colour Julie. You are unique.

U can use instant coffee powder with water for monotone watercolors with really rich tones. Thicker pastes create darker shades of brown, and thinner mixtures create lighter tints. Acrylic varnish will protect the surface of a finished painting. Or instead of using water u can mix the coffee powder with an acrylic medium to make your own paints. Coffee stains, so it will be a permanent color when used directly on paper. I sprinkle instant coffee granules on wet paper for a distressed look. You can also use instant tea but I prefer the instant coffee.

Just DO it. If you don’t like it, you can reclaim your canvas with gesso and start again. Nothing is lost with experience. And…I am mad for script stamps and stencils and would LOVE to add to my little collection. Thank you for the opportunity!

Very cool, Julie! One can use that technique for making all sorts of embellishments, also! And if your orange-wood stick is too sharp, run the pointy end over some sandpaper to tone it down some. And the other end can do some interesting things in spaces large enough to accommodate it!

I would to suggest to experiment. When I’m thinking about ‘what would happen if…” I’m less likely to get stuck in my head and care about the outcome.

Haven’t tried the metal tape yet – must do that soon!
Would love to win those stencils, especially the script one.
As a few other people have said – just start. So often I lack inspiration but have found if I just get out a few favorite supplies and start fiddling around, pretty soon I’m doing something.

The best tip I learned from a great teacher was to break the rules. Break the rules of how the materials are “supposed” to be used, what colors are “supposed” to go together, what my art is “supposed” to look like. Just do what feels good to me and what comes naturally to me and take it from there.

This is going to sound silly (especially coming from a professional designer) – but I often forget to sketch an idea out first, before diving right into Photoshop or Illustrator. I end up wasting time going nowhere, because a quick sketch or 2 would have told me what was (or wasn’t) feasible. So: always sketch an idea out first. The second best tip I know of is using masks in Photoshop. They are magical and I love them.

The best advice I ever received was to do something creative everyday don’t always wait for inspiration to hit. Practice makes perfect. Love all your stencils.

Oh Wow! I used to do this as a kid with chocolate wrapper 😀
Well this looks so cool!
My favourite tip would be “Dont try to make your Art PERFECT…try it make it more YOU”….I have heard many awesome crafters say…that the mistakes and coverups we make on our projects gives it a more handmade charm

A best tip…actually, I live by a few guidelines. Every once in awhile take a class or learn a new technique from someone. I have an art degree so it’s like a refresher course, sometimes it’s a jump start for a new idea. And remember, art is art. Everything else is everything else.

Best tip I’ve received is that art doesn’t have to be perfect. That relieves the fear of being good ‘enough’.

My best art making tip is something I learned from another artist – using the under paper used to catch paint or other drippy goodness as an element in my art journal, either as a focal or in collage. Now, I see what I used to throw away as another recyclable material for my art!

Also, something I discovered in a meditation once… Instead of thinking about “what should it be” – think about “what can it be” — this gives a whole different and liberating experience.

When I taught art in the past, my students said the best tip I ever gave them was to say that “it’s just paper!!” Paper is plentiful and it’s okay to go ahead and make messy mistakes, super hot messes, and also amazing artwork. My second favorite tip is “you have to make a lot of bad art in order to make good art”.
Julie, Thank you for all of your amazing tips, tricks, mistakes/opportunities, and your wonderful art and personality!

an art instructor once told me not to “fall in love with my own work to the point that I am not willing to sell it or let it go” because I would always be able to paint/create another and in doing that would continue to learn and grow. So now I can enjoy along the way, even look back and still love an earlier creation but not be stuck in that time warp.

I would love to win your stencils, but meanwhile, I also like to use stuff found at home. For example, the leftover papers from using paper punches or a cutting machine make cool stencils! Depending on how durable your paper is, you can use them once or a few times.

A dear friend and mentor advised that you don’t need to know everything before you begin. Just begin…even if you end up changing it later. Get started, and trust that the rest will follow.

Fabulous technique. Among other things, I am crochet. In order to keep my work from unraveling, I slip a safety pin through the loop on the hook when I need to set it aside for awhile.

My tip is to look at the world with a different eye. Playing with my niece, reminds me to open my imagination. Go for a walk outside and the fresh air stimulates my mind.

Julie, you always inspire me! So many great tips already given! Mine is,”work it till you love it”. I struggle with knowing when enough is enough and sometimes overwork things. If a piece feels unfinished or overworked I just let it sit for a day or so then work on it till I love the results.

Loved this idea. Cheated a little. I put the metal sheet through an embossing folder and it came out beautifully. Then covered with alcohol inks. Which wasn’t creat because I’ve never used them before. The metal sheets are very thin and it was hard not to rip. Wanted to upload a picture but don’t know where to do it. Thanks for you daily inspiration!,,
