I'm trying to work on abstracts.  I stink at them at the moment.  That's just not how my brain works.  But, I want to be better.  And the only way to get better is to practice and fail and practice and fail and practice until you finally succeed.  So here is a canvas (it's a large one: 30×30) where I was practicing:

BalzerAbstract-wm

I don't love it.  I don't hate it.  It just doesn't feel very "me" at all.  I'm going to keep practicing, trying to find my voice.  What is something you're practicing at the moment?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love this – the colours are beautiful together. You are so inspirational and I enjoy the way you post things that you aren’t sure about.

  • Love the idea of “finding your voice” with art. Have heard of this for writing but not art. I’ve gone through my shipping tag stage and am now obsessing with mail art and just did a mixed media canvas.

  • I really love the colors you used on this canvas. I’m a bright color girl myself generally reaching for either reds and yellows or peacock colors (anything shimmery, turquoise, teal, purple and green). But, your canvas makes me want to explore some more muted colors. I especially love that deep, dark green!

  • Funnily enough – abstracts here too – it’s hard to stop or not think they need…something. I worry mine look like backgrounds – I get where you are coming from with the practise, practise, practise. Have you read Realistic Abstracts by Kees Van Aalst? That’s a pretty good book.
Also faces – I’m loving faces at the moment – eventually I want to be good at the whole figure but am starting with faces and keep drawing eyes and lips in my sketchbook.

  • I don’t really “get” abstracts but this one does catch my eye and I find it calming. I’m practicing using spray ink with stencils and not having it leak out and change the design. Maybe I should just practice letting go. LOL

  • WOW, this is gorgeous and awesome! I love the whole thing, abstract is a favorite of mine. These colors look great together, soft and calm.
It’s nice to know you are practicing and still work on things that don’t come easy or to your liking.
I started a new prayer journal, just did my first postcard swap and joined another holiday card one. Lots of new going on here and it’s inspiring and happy for me.
    Thanks for sharing!

  • I’ve never been one for abstracts but I do love the colors you used and would, in fact, love to have this hanging in my house. It would be perfect right behind my sofa! Did you use a regular paint brush or a foam one?

  • I really like it, too. I wonder if you would like it more if you had used circles – I’ve noticed that’s a motif you like to use. I love abstracts, too and love making abstract pages in my journal. As for practicing, I feel like I’m always practicing – I’m hoping for that Ira Glass moment when what I’m making doesn’t look like crap anymore but I what I’m envisioning in my head. 🙂

  • I love abstracts and think yours are great! I love the colors you chose. I had a hard time going from scrapbooking (which is a lot more orderly–at least my pages were) to art journaling, which is totally unstructured. Talk about not loving the first attempts . . . Your honesty encourages all of us to keep trying!

  • I love it and I find when I create art my critical spirit takes over and I don’t feel it is that good. My guess is it will grow on you. If you still are not sure about it you could always go back at add a few things later. Just live with it and see what happens. Thanks as always for posting your art, your creativity and your challenges.

  • I like it too. It’s less confident than your faces but that makes it softer, more vulnerable. I look forward to seeing your abstract journey. I am practicing making natural dyes with everything from pomegranates to eucalyptus, marigolds, coffee…I am creating patterns (using some of the what I learned in your Charlotte class) with shibori folding techniques and sometimes with paint to the shirts and t-shirts and scarves I dye. http://crystalorganicfarm.wordpress.com/2013/11/10/passionately-dyeing/ Just starting and wish I were further along.

  • Hi Julie. I just finished a mixed media collage class yesterday. I am working on trying to make some finished pieces. Also, practicing letting people see what I am working on. It is hard for me to share.
As for your piece today, I love the colors and really like the piece but I agree about not looking like a “Julie”. As I look at it the things that don’t ring true to me for one of your paintings are the color palette and it seems too soft and controlled. Can’t way to see as you continue to grow your process. Do you believe anyone can paint anything? It seems that most artists settle into either landscape, portraits, still life or abstract. I wonder if that is just a preference thing or is it a skill set? Just curious about your thoughts. It’s clear that you are not afraid to try to tackle anything and you will put the work in to make it happen. I remember when you focused on faces. A face a day. Maybe an abstract a day is in our future.

  • I am into abstract painting for the last few years at least. i love the play of color, shape, movement. Today I was touring a working studio…artists rent space to work/sell their art. Several were very chatty sharing experiences, supplies, knowledge. One man in particular said something to me that stuck. He said to stay true to your own style. Don’t follow fads because they come and go. So look at your own art and see if you pick up a reoccuring shape or color palette. My first thought was that you have black in a lot of your work. Even just a little. Try adding it to this in some way. I know it sounds drastic but it is something authentic to your style. Start gentle and see if you want to take it bolder. I think the black contrast against this soft palette would bring some real “pop”. You like letters/numbers. Maybe do some of them randomly…not necessarily to spell anything. Maybe your favorite letters or numbers like those you carve by hand. Just an idea. Drips are a great way to add color. Lay the canvas on the floor and let drops fall in clusters. Anything goes. Just stay true to your artistic instinct and have fun. You can only learn by trying (says the over thinker here). Enjoy!

Enjoy!

• Your abstract painting is beautiful! I love the contrast of the grayish squares against the background – they appear to float! I love the way you are adventurous with your art! Right now I am practicing with watercolors, and I feel a little out of my comfort zone, but it’s fun to always keep learning!

  • I really, really love it! It’s a style I could live with, and I love the color combination.
