Yesterday I was catching up on some blog reading and I came across some fabulous jewelry by talented illustrator Gennine Zlatkis.  She used a pyrograph to burn designs into a leather cuff and a leather ring.  I ran to my art studio immediately!

I had a wood burning tool and some blank leather cuffs just sitting around.  Clearly, this was fate!  So, I got to work:

Working with a wood burning tool is easy.  You hold it just like a pencil.  You have to go slowly and there is a bit of a smell from the burning leather.  But with a bit of time and patience, you get something lovely!

Have you ever felt so inspired by a blog post that you had to run out and give it a try right away?  I'm definitely glad that I had everything on hand.  (A good excuse to keep stuffing my studio full of stuff, right?!)

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love this idea. It is very retro and cool. I can’t wait to try this. I think it would sell well at all the vending shows I am doing this summer!

  • Her blog, years ago, is what got me into watercoloring. I hadn’t been back to her blog for ages until last week. She, like you, is amazing. I love your bracelet’s design.

  • i was just watching the show “how it works” yesterday where they showed how latex gloves were produced. i don’t really have words for this process…. there are a bunch of “faux hands” (like your bracelet model) on a rotating belt – and there are multiple steps that the gloves (and faux hands) go through.
i am certain your “faux hand” is from one of those production houses.
ok, off hijack. great bracelet 🙂 and, yes i do get inspired from blogs. your postings about the way you use your different journals has inspired me to try to stabilize my approach. i currently mix all my journal types for all my purposes, which i don’t care about but it confuses and overwhelms me.

  • The cuff is gorgeous! It looks like it must have been fun to do some doodling with the wood-burning tool. I’m often inspired by blogs or YouTube videos to try something. Your blog has made me run for the studio (aka the living room–it’s been taken over by art supplies) several times. In fact, your blog is one of the reasons I tried (and later got addicted to) mixed media art.

  • OMG! Julie, it’s beautiful! Who would ever think that one could doodle and create on leather and make something so beautiful? I hope you’ll be making some more “leather art” for us. Maybe some kind of broach, made out of the same color leather as your bracelet, then maybe have some Swarovski Crystals somehow put on there, maybe as the center of your flowers? Wow, you really did a neat thing Julie! Keep it going! I can hardly wait to see what you’ll make next!
    Peace and Blessings,

Yes, Julie! Only every time I read YOUR blog! However, “feeling” does not often enough turn into “doing” as it did for you and these awesome cuffs. But I still want to try this. All I need is the leather…
Thanks for your constant inspiration! 🙂

I really get a “high” when I can just go into my craftroom and try a new technique I’ve seen on the web. For me, it’s better than chocolate! LOL
