Adventures in Arting Podcast: Going to Museums

PodcastHeader

I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time.  It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen.  If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here.  You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire.  I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art.  It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.

Today we're switching things up a bit.  Instead of having a guest, Mom and I are chatting about museums.  We discuss visiting museums with children, what is a museum, favorite museum experiences, and even wander into some questions of the value of certain art.

I wanted to share a resource guide in this post to some of the museums and artwork we discuss on the podcast.

  • Dear Julie,
There have been a few times I wanted to write you to compliment you on various things, so today I am doing just that! My motivation for writing today is this mornings “Adventures in Arting Podcast: Going to Museums.” I was absolutely DELIGHTED to receive this email today–I think your ability to choose just the right pictures and particular story topics and themes is brilliant! Bravo Julie for brightening my day with your creative thought and diligence!!

  • I loved this podcast – really interesting and great to hear more from the two of you. I could relate to so much that was said and loved the part about your copying of abstract art helping you to understand it better. Many thanks for the chance to listen in 🙂

  • Great podcast! My most inspirational art piece is the David in Florence, awesome. My favorite museum is the one I visited last. I go to feed and free my soul always gathering positive and negative inspiration. Some negative inspirations really make me think and take stock. People, don’t forget the free museums at many universities, and the free days at pay museums. You can go more often. We took our 4 year old granddaughter to the U of Mich museum and talked about finding pictures of animals. We also found naked women who were getting ready to take a bath and a modern Columbianesque figure who had lost his leg. We looked for that let all day, still not found. Then she became art as she stood in the window of the installation room and waved at the students. She was not happy when they did not wave back. Children are so resourceful and need all sorts of experiences. Thanks again for making me think and art.

  • Julie I loved this podcast! As a museum goer/lover it was so interesting to listen to you and your mom’s discussion. I live in DC and took my kids when they were little to every museum and still go myself when I can, however, not sure I could have articulated why I like them before I listened to the podcast. You both discussed all of the reasons I do love them! Thanks for the really fab discussion. Loved it.

  • Oh Julie! I just loved this podcast, I listened attentively to every word. I so enjoyed hearing your insight and thoughts on curatorial decisions, and have often wondered about some of those decisions myself. I also loved hearing your Mom say (paraphrasing here) that she liked to think that there were so many things to see and learn in this world. What a great reminder to always keep our eyes open and see what the world has to show us each day. Also, this podcast was just the kick in the pants that I needed to get back to our local Museum for a day by myself!

  • i LOVED this podcast! so, of course you can do more in this style. i found this discussion intriguing, interesting, and it made think. i’m still processing the information, and may even listen again, on another day. i am a fan of art museums, galleries, wherever art is displayed, and i know the definition of art is subjective. it’s time i visited such a place again. i enjoy your podcasts, because you are both insightful and intelligent. thank you for the wonderful things you share with us everyday julie. 🙂

  • I finally got a chance to listen to this podcast (which I love your podcasts by the way!) and I have to say I think it is vitally important for people to “see” other peoples views (which are expressed in art). I have degrees in studio art and art history so I do have a background in art, but I think for our future generations to be more compassionate about other people, to think creatively to solve problems, they need to be able to think with an open mind. I have made going to museums a part of our family’s life, I want my kids to feel comfortable going to museums and not feel intimidated or scared. Minnesota (where we used to live) has a great program through their institute of arts that brings art to the schools so that kids who can’t go to the museum….the art comes to them. We need more of that!
