Expressionistic Figure Painting with Barbara Yeterian

Last week I took a week-long "Expressionistic Figure Painting" workshop at The Art Students League with artist Barbara Yeterian.  We started most days with sketching.  All of these sketches are between 3 and 8 minutes:

Barbara had us do some sketches in color, which really changed the game.  This is a ten-minute drawing:

This is a fifteen-minute drawing:

This was my first time using chalk pastels.  There's a learning/exploring curve, but I really enjoyed them.  I'd like to do some more exploring.  I don't usually do a formal study for a painting, but I'm thinking that I might start.  The chalk pastels were a great way to explore color, along with form — and how color creates form.

I can definitely see that my previous class on quickly capturing the figure has paid off.  In that class I was struggling to capture one person in 5 minutes.  Now I can easily do two people in 3 minutes!

Over the next few days I'll share the three canvases I painted in class!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • You’ve improved so much in such a short time. Good job. Chalk pastels are my favorite medium. I have never been able to do anything with water color which is why I watch you so faithfully!! You’ve done a great job with the figures. I’m glad to see you learning. I have noticed your art journals have a better form to them too!!! No expert here. Just hang out in art museums!!
