I grew up near a spectacularly beautiful cemetery called Mount Auburn Cemetery. It is an enormous cemetery filled with gorgeous landscaping, beautiful old mausoleums, ancient gravestones, and lots of birds. I grew up climbing the tower and going for walks all around the cemetery, reading the names and stories on the gravestones out loud and making up stories about the deceased. As people that I know have died, some of them have been buried in the cemetery. So visits there now include some particular stops to say, "Hello."
Yesterday I went for a visit with my Dad and his family. My stepmother's brother's wife (is that confusing or what?) is a landscape designer and she is a huge fan of Mount Auburn's landscape design. It was interesting to go with her and see the particular things she was interested in. I took more than one hundred photos, but today, I'm sharing just five.
If you're ever in the Boston area, I highly recommend visiting Mount Auburn Cemetery. It's a lovely place in all four seasons.
Thanks for stopping by!

I shall put Mount Auburn Cemetery on my list of places to visit. What a beautiful day you had – says she from southern England where we had a typical November day today – grey and rainy all day long, it seemed to never get really light. So I really enjoyed looking at your photos, dreaming I was there.

As I was looking at your photos, I was thinking that they had to be in Massachusetts! I grew up there, but haven’t been back in MANY years!

Gorgeous day for walking around and taking pictures. I must say that I loved that old gnarly tree. If it could talk, it looked like it would have an awful lot to say! Speaking of a lot to say, I just wanted to compliment you on the job that you and Julie do on Scrapbook Soup. I don’t get to watch the show on PBS as our station does not carry the show here in Detroit area, but I watch faithfully on line. It is fun to see how you have grown into your role. I must have just finished your first season where the show was really run by Julie and Beth, to what I am watching now which I am guessing is your third set of shows. I just love to watch and see what both Julie’s are up to. It is such a wonderful show and it saddens me that we don’t have more craft shows on TV anymore.

What a beautiful, interesting, peaceful place…I can see why you love it. I’d love to visit someday.

Beautiful pics. I also like wandering through cemeteries. They are so poignantly inspiring, how people were loved and honored. We often include cemetery walks in our trips and were recently in the cemetery in Lexington. It brings back an entire era. Thanks for the download yesterday. It’s sitting waiting to go into my art journal. I’m using the entire pic cut into four pieces to fit, with some of the letters individually that came out too big when I was working on the printing.

I have only been there once and would like to go again soon.
Maybe in the spring? I have a friend who takes photos of gravestones and she has taken some nice ones there. Oh wait, you know Christina from Lawrence (it is she that takes the photos). We have had some lovely weather here in N.E. this past week.

Thank you for telling us about the place and sharing five of your photos. Hamburg in Northern Germany also has a very large cemetery, Ohlsdorf, famous for its landscaping. It has a population of surprisingly tame squirrels which will take food from your hand if you are patient.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures!!! As a kid, my sister & I would often take long walks in our hometown’s cemetary on our way home from swimming lessons. We too would read names & dates (always looking for children) & decide how they had lived, died & how those who loved them missed them so. The cemetary was completely surrounded by a low stone wall that we would walk along. Over the years, I have shared with many people those memories that I always found beautiful & peaceful, but I’ve always been surprised how many who thought that was creepy. I’m glad to know someone else finds them beautiful!! ( especially love the tower! It looks just like a rook chess piece! Happy Holidays!

Your post reminds me of growing up in the suburbs and we too had a cemetary across the street. It was a new cemetary at the time and was pretty barren as far as landscaping, trees, pretty much anything…..but i would go over there with a book, read, or lay on my back and look for images in the clouds. Thanks for sparking a childhood good memory. I think I will have to drive by soon to see if it has blossomed. Mt. Auburn is beautiful!

You grew up there too? I went to BB&N down the street and grew up on Marlborough St. in Back Bay.
And you’ve brought back bittersweet memories. My mother’s funeral was in the Mt. Auburn chapel, over 20 years ago. It is so beautiful there. We had champagne toasting, poetry-filled, service with potted gardenias (her favorite flower) lining the pews. She was a dancer so we threw a bouquet of flowers on to her coffin, as you do at the end of a brilliant performance. We stood outside after on those beautiful grounds and sang “To Life” (one of her favorite songs) in the sun. I really needed to see this today to stop feeling overwhelmed by the details of my to-do list. I’m glad I visited, as usual.

I currently live near an old cemetary and love taking walks through it. The statues and mausoleums are really beautiful; I especially love the Victorian cemetary art that resembles wood. This cemetary is so old that it has a gothic-style building where they would store the deceased until the ground was soft enough to dig in the spring. Kind of morbid but fascinating.

Thanks for the pics. My brother and I used to play in a nearby
cemetery in Marshall,Texas. It was so peaceful and beautiful.
Not creepy at all. A close friend and I have visited cemeteries
in our travels through the years in the U.S. and abroad. We
found a really interesting one in Crested Butte last year. She
showed me a pic of a lovely statue in the oldest cemetery in our
little Texas town just last week. I never knew that we had anything that beautiful in that place. Will have to visit it.
