Last weekend I went to Coney Island for the first time!  I've lived in NYC for 14 years and never been before.  We got really lucky and the annual sand sculpture contest happened to be on the day we were there.  How cool is that?  The sculptures were very impressive and it saddens me to think that they have probably all disappeared by now, back into the beach.  On the other hand, there's something lovely about ephemeral site specific art.  It makes me grateful that I had the good luck to be there and see it.  Here's a peek at five of my favorites:

Did you notice all the little people riding the roller coaster?  Some of the details were just astounding!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I went to Coney Island just to see the sand sculptures! NY1 had a news report about it so we added that to our list of things to do. We started with the Voice tunnel on Park Avenue, went on to the Children’s Book exhibit at the Main Library on Fifth Avenue and ended at Coney Island for the sand sculptures. It was an art-filled day and art of all different kinds. It was wonderful.

  • I know you secretly want to explore more of Brooklyn – lol, looks like a great day! We rarely go away in the summer since there’s so much to do in NYC. I love bringing the boys around to do touristy stuff. I’m running out of time with the 17 year old.

  • Thank you for sharing, Julie! I wouldn’t have detected the “little people” without your hint. Amazing, all of it! Were you able to watch some of the sculpturing process as well?
Funny that it often takes so long to go and have a look at what is right in front of your door. I think most locals are more or less the same that way. (I have met people in Cairo who had lived there all their life, but had never seen the pyramids!)

  • I never saw Coney Island until I no longer lived in NY and was visiting. These are amazing. Speaking of ephemeral site specific art, have you ever seen the documentary “Rivers and Tides” about the art of Andy Goldsworthy? One of my favorites.

  • They might still be there…a lot of times they spray the sculptures with a fine mist of Elmer’s Glue and water, which makes them stay intact for a few weeks, even through rain. Cool pics!

I got to see the sand sculptures at Hampton Beach this year for the first time and I was just blown away with the details!
