The Weekend Five

The Weekend Five: Just Ordered from Dick Blick

I just ordered a cart full of stuff from Dick Blick.  I can't help it.  As inevitably happens, I need one thing and then to get the discount or the free shipping I just keep adding stuff.  Sigh.

Here are five of the things I ordered:

This is Jane Davies fault.  She turned me on to the pale colors and neturals in this line of matte acrylics and now I want them all.  Plus the black and white are simply must-have staples.  (P.S.: matte paint = art journal pages that don't stick together)

I keep hearing about how awesome acrylic inks are and so I had to order some.  I read the reviews for these versus the Liquitex acrylic inks and decided that these were the ones to try!  I'm super excited about the white, which I understand to be quite opaque!

This is not a product that I knew existed until I went wandering through the Blick online aisles.  I love my Golden Fluid acrylics, and I'm a fan of matte paints, so I'm super excited to see what these are all about.  I will be sure to report back once I've given them a try!  Theoretically, they're great for spraying!

For the last year or two I've almost exclusively used a plastic plate as my paint palette.  I've only pulled out the Palette Paper when I've been working on a large painting, custom mixing all of my own colors.  And since I bought my big beautiful 16×24 Tri-Art Non-Stick Palette, I haven't even been using the Palette Paper.  And then, all of a sudden, I found myself doing a lot of printing (could have something to do with my upcoming book) and I've been going through Palette Paper like nobody's business.  With the super sale on these Blick disposable palette pads, I had to buy 3!  Didn't I?

I've been doing a lot of painting with India Ink and Sumi Ink recently.  Those kinds of inks need a palette with wells (so you can dilute the intense black with water).  I decided to upgrade from a plastic  palette (which I may or may not have managed to flip over a few times when it was full of black ink) to a more substantial porcelain palette.  Truth be told, Dick Blick didn't have the palette I really wanted (a cupcake palette), so we'll see how this goes.

So, there you have it.  That's what is coming to play at my house (hopefully soon).

Have a great weekend!

  • I haven’t seen those Golden Matte colors either. I would love to try those. As much as we love to play and use the things we have in our studio, there is nothing like new paints and new mediums to spark some extra creativity, huh? Have a wonderfully messy weekend!

  • Hi Julie, I “found” you through 21 Secrets and love following your blog. I am new to art journaling coming from the weaving/spinning/quilting world and vowed never to buy paint, until I used up all of my yarn/fleece/fabric, haha, an impossibility. But then I “discovered” collaging from Quilting Arts magazine which led to Cloth/Paper/Scissors, which led to you! I had a big laugh at your admitting to buying more to get the discounts/free shipping. That happened to me last year when my son wanted one of those “expensive” wool scarves. “I can weave you one”, I offered. Of course I needed two colors for the plaid which brought me just under the required amount for the discount, so I added another color which brought me just under the free shipping amount so I ordered another cone of black. (You can always use more black.) The price of weaving him a scarf went up to twice the cost if I had just gone out and bought him one…but I did have enough wool to make one for my dad and one for my other son. The women in my family have many handwoven scarves, but this is a first for the guys. Thanks for sharing all of your tips. I’m a new, but loyal fan. Hope to take a class with you someday. We found out about the Boston area one too late. Sorry this is so long….

  • If you tell me you placed your order at 2 a.m. I will know for sure that we are sisters from different mothers! Why is it that we can’t help but work towards that free shipping? We spend $50 to save $5 but somehow it makes sense?

  • Forgot to mention that I recently saw somewhere that you can use wax on your finished journal pages to keep them from sticking together. I have used baby powder but don’t like it because it dulls the colors. Anyone have other solutions?

  • I think I was channelling you last night as I suddenly decided I needed to order vast amounts of supplies from Dick Blick as well. Worst thing is I am in Australia so have to wait for a shipping quote AND I forgot to add 3 items on the list too so am trying to combine orders! The exchange rate is very good for us now so it’s worth buying lots of art supplies from the US even though the shipping will be expensive.
I have been going through your blog post by post from the beginning (have just started 2010) and just want to pass on my thanks for all the inspiration you provide. You rock my world!

  • I love the Blick’s fluid acrylics, but one of their purple tends to fade away (I was not the only one with the issue, apparently).
I had no clue about Matt fluid acrylic ! I have not wandered around the Golden aisle when I went on Saturday (we crossed the border just so I could go to the store in Seattle). Shoot ! Will have to try next time. If they have it in store.
The acrylic inks are so fun to play with, you will love them.
