Remember all those stencil hops we used to have?  Well, they're back! For the next few weeks I'll be offering up lots of stencil ideas, inspiration, awesome people to go and visit, and giveaways!

Spring2012StencilHop-500
Today I've chosen to show off the super cool Pomegranate Stencil (available in 12×12 and 6×6):

Pomegranate
And I've asked three extremely talented ladies to play with the Pomegranate stencil as well:

  • Leslie Tucker Jenison: Leslie is a talented quilter with a generous heart.  I had a lovely stay with her at her beautiful home in San Antonio, TX last year.  Be sure to check out her hour-long instructional DVD called DIY Surface Design.
  • Michelle LaPoint Rydell: Michelle is an art journaler, scrapbooker, and color enthusiast!  I can spot her pages a mile away because of her distinct style!  I'd describe it as whimsical, colorful, and bold!  I enjoy reading her blog every day.
  • Paula Phillips: Paula is a stencil expert.  She is also a technique queen with a million-and-one cool ideas and lots of videos sharing those ideas!  Be sure to check out her YouTube channel and her DVD!

When I design stencils I'm not only trying to think of cool designs, but I'm trying to think of designs that will be versatile.  The Pomegranate stencil makes a great background, as you can see on this canvas:

Canvas-sm
Canvas-sm
I used molding paste to create some super dimensional texture with the stencil!

Or you can simply use part of the stencil, as on this art journal spread:

If you'd like to see me put together the page above in just two quick minutes, watch the video below:

And you can even use a single "pomegranate" as in the tag below:

Tag-sm
It makes a perfect center for a flower, as you can see!

If you'd like to win the Pomegranate Stencil in 6×6 and 12×12 leave a comment answering the following question:

What is your favorite medium (ink, paint, pens etc.) to use with stencils?  Why?

Now go and visit the three other blogs in the hop for some awesome inspiration!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. If you're stencil shy, consider taking my FREE online class, "Stencil 101."

  • My favorite medium (this week!) are the color wash sprays because I can get a great effect with gesso (thank you Paula!). I also like using paint with my Balzer design stencils. Thank you Julie for the chance to win the stencils-don’t have the pomegranate yet.

  • My favorite medium to use with stencils is Spackle. The kind you use on your walls to cover holes. It is easy to slap on, comes off with a sharp edge, and has monumental dimension.
    Nothing else even compares.

  • I love using Dylusions spray inks with stencils. However I have just discovered Pan Pastels and love what happens when you mix colours through the stencil. You never know what the result will be like

  • I would have to say I love using inks with my stencils as you can control and blend so nicely. It’s also so easy to continue moving the stencil for various effects.

  • Julie I love this stencil! So versatile – I’ll be stalking the LSS for it for sure. My favourite medium is ink in a spray format; the application is quick and you often get unexpected results with partial sprays or when combining colours. Plus I’m lazy; it’s an easy albeit messy option – suits me to a T!

  • I would like to say I prefer mists with stencils when I can get the sprayers to work! The mists are quick (when the sprayers work), have such a nice random look and I love being able to flip them over and get the negative impression as well. But I do seem to get too many issues with the clogged sprayers!

  • I love using my stencils with acrylics. There are so many different ways to use them… straight up, mixed with water in a spray bottle as a mist, watered down as a watercolor, layered and then misting water over stencil and blotting with paper towel to reveal the design… I could go on! Thanks for this opportunity, Julie!

My favorite medium with stencils has got to be paint, especially after taking your Stencil 101 – using the make up sponges is fail proof and I love the fact that I can keep using them by simply cutting off the end! Thanks for your continual inspiration and information.

Pastels, paint and paintsticks have to be first choices, but other ideas are zooming in from your blog..thank you so much..

  • After taking your 101 stencil class, I’m addicted! Have tried acrylic, color wash spray, and yesterday tried Paula’s suggestion of removing the paint with a baby wipe-a great technique! Now I just need some of your fabulous stencils to be even more creative. Love your blog and the guests you present.

I have so Admired many works of out with Stencil use but really wasn’t game to try it myself as I could work out what all these Texture names meant. So Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
This will be amazing for me to learn.
I have been following your Blog for a while now but never dreamed that I would be able to do something like you…..

  • lately I’ve been using black acrylic paint with my stencils and then doodling inside of them with white sharpie fine point paint markers. Thanks Julie for all you do to make the world a more colorful, freer place! By the way, I was cutting out watch faces from magazines to make a “Time Flies” spread (after being completely inspired by your 30 Days class), and realized that the time is always set to either 10:10 or 1:50. I guess some ad guru decided that makes the most pleasing presentation. I know this is random but thought I’d share.

  • I love love love your line of stencils. Someday I will eventually have all of them. I have been a stencil person for a long time and love decorating pages with them. It depends on what look I am after as to what I really like to use. If I want raised dimension, I love using acrylic paints and molding paste that I have added color to. If I don’t want a lot of raised dimension, I love Color Wash sprays and my new love is the Dylusion sprays. Also love the sparkle of the Perfect Pearl spray mists.

  • Julie – I am very happy to see teh Stencil Hops back! It is so much fun seeing how others are using them and I get a lot of great ideas! This stencil is awesome and now on my must have list. I’ve been trying lots of different things as I am fairly new to the art journaling techniques – but I think my favorite technique I have used so far is the molding paste… although I want to try the gel medium resist – that looks so fun too.

I use all sorts of medium with stencils but I mostly like to spritz with liquid watercolors or radiant rains paints. I’ve also dabbed with acrylics. I like the look of the molding paste and may have to give that a try.

Of course, I made sure to use a pan pastel fixative before I journaled or doodled:) I especially love your 6×6 size stencils for working in my art journals:)

  • This is the stencil I soooo badly want! Lots of uses for it…
for easy use I like to use spray inks with my stencils, but when I have time to really play and get dirty? Modeling paste. Yum yum! I never know what I will get from it pulling color from underneath … or what happens when I use different mediums on it!

  • I have been using pigment ink pads with mine- you know those huge cases with several different colors in them? I love the way they look – very muted on top of vibrant color wash and daubers. I LOVE this stencil- waiting for my favorite online store to stock up on all the new stencils so I can add to my stash!

  • If you put a 6 X 6 stencil in the middle of a sheet of 12 X 12 paper and then use a brayer loaded with acrylic paint (not too thick) and roll from one side of the stencil to the other side of the stencil and then to the edge of the 12 X 12 paper – and then repeat on all four sides and then on the corners – you will end up with the stencilled image in the middle and the negative image taken off the brayer round the edges…

I love the texture is gives the page I put it on…even though I was too messy to get full definition from the stencil. Looking froward to playing some this weekend 🙂

  • Stencils go hand in hand with gesso for me. I usually will use the stencil, paint through it with gesso then turn the stencil onto another paper and brayer any remaining gesso onto the second paper.I’ll do several layers onto a paper before I start to paint. The paper will absorb the paint more than the gessoed areas giving a light/dark effect.

  • My favorite medium to use with stencils is spray inks and then water. I love how you can lift some of the color off with the water. I watched Paula’s video a few days ago and just loved what she did with the pomegranate stencil. Since I don’t own that one yet, I did the same technique with gesso, acrylic paint and then using the stencil to wipe off the paint with the pattern of the stencil, with 2 other stencils. Thanks for having another stencil hop! Love your designs.

  • isn’t it interesting on how stencils have made a come-back. They were big in the 80’s or maybe 1990’s used as wall trim instead of wallpaper, then pretty much laughed at and ignored until the mixed media movement rediscovered them to be used in a more creative way – cycles and circles…..

  • Oh, so beautiful! And I’m so pleased I ordered your latest stencils online last Monday! My favourite medium with stencil is ink, most of all spray ink. Because it is so quick and because I can reverse the stencil and get one more pattern. But I’m considering using them with Panpastel.

  • I love using spray inks because it is so easy and doesn’t slow me down. I also like to make stencils out of lace paper (laser-cut scrapbook paper) by covering it with contact paper on both sides and then using an exacto knife to remove the negative spaces. They come in the larger paper size in lots of intricate patterns.

  • Hmmmm, I’m going with paint because, depending on the amount of paint you have on your spongy thingy and how much pressure you apply, you can blend colors and shade and get a variety of looks – even with one color, actually… A close second would be the molding paste (which I used recently while taking your “30 Days in Your Journal” class, by the way…I did an alphabet on the very first spread!). I just love the texture you get with it! Thanks for the chance to win this fab stencil – love it!

  • Stencils are not what I usually think of using but looking back on some of the things I’ve done it occurs to me I have used stencils and was not realizing what I was doing!! Last year to add texture to a painting I used a molding gel over some circles I had punched out of cardstock = stencil. In my journal I was using a magazine cutout of a woman’s form and I used the shape left over from the cut out to repeat shadow shapes in the background = stencil. Hmmm…I’m going to have to rethink this whole stencil thing :-0

  • My all time favorite medium/technique for using with a stencil was the time I used ash from a “letting go” ritual. That was as much for the transfomative art experience as it was for the finished look of the piece. Otherwise I really like the look of the spray inks…so vibrant and yummy. Oh and I Love, Love, Love this stencil…just saw it used in a reverse resist technique where the medium (think it was acrylic paint was pulled up through the stencil with a baby wipe…very cool!!)

    Have a great day

My favorite medium to use with stencils is sprays and pens. The sprays is a bit more messier, but I like to make a mess :0) You never know how the result will be. I really like to draw into the stencils. Both gel pens and writing words, if the stencil has “big holes”. Stencils are my favorites, I like how you can turn them around and find the perfect place for them, and make repeted patterns :0)

  • My favourite medium at the moment is ink sprays and glimmer mists as it is quick and I can get another image by flipping the stencil over. I really like how you use a make-up sponge to add different colours to a stencil in the video and would love to try out that technique. Thanks for the chance of winning this cool stencil. 🙂
