I wanted to share how this painting…

VanGoghGirl-wm

…came together.  I took a bunch of photos with my iPhone along the way.  I've put a line or two of commentary underneath each photo.

1-wm

First, I sketched in the basic figure.

2-wm

Next, I added in some shading to refine the image.  I kept the paint a very light color so that I could cover up my mistakes during this "sketch" period.

3-wm

In this image you can see that I've brought in lots of different shades of brown to give her some form.

4-wm

Color is beginning to be added!  Her eyes are looking a little enormous and glassy to me.

5-wm

I added more shading and I lowered her eyelids a bit.

6-wm

I've refined the shading and added in a basic color wash to the background.

Final-wm

And here she is in all her glory on my easel.

I wasn't sure whether or not an easel was a good investment for me.  But I have to say that I love having it even if it is too big to fit in my studio.  Here's what my "painting studio" looks like:

Paintingstudio-wm

I spread a towel out on our dining room table, step over my husband's golf clubs, and get to painting.

Finally, I want to share the following painting:

ALittleBirdieCanvas-sm

I did it in July 2009 and I was infinitely proud of myself.  (I share this image and another in this chatty post from 2009.)

I think I've come a long way since this painting.

That said, drawing and painting are not skills that come naturally to me.  I have worked on developing those skills over the past three years.  Today I want to encourage any of you who are sitting out there reading this and convinced that you can't draw, that it just takes dedicated practice and time.

Seriously.

2009-2012-wm

Who knows how my paintings will progress over the next three years!?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Julie, I just love this painting! You have inspired me on my way to learning to draw and paint. Do you ever stop learning? I don’t think so, especially if you continue to “play”! You really have changed your style, I like the old and the new, they are expressions of soul…thanks for sharing, what a delight!

  • Most impressed by the shading and the light in her eyes on the right painting, though there’s a fun attitude on the painting style on the left and you should cultivate both ways.

  • Julie, this painting is absolutely stunning!!! I love seeing your process which is especially helpful. I happen to think the 2009 paintings are wonderful too. 🙂 And you have come a long way in your technique – just stunning. I happen to love her neck and her cheeks. You can totally tell she is thinking about something – maybe it’s her eyes I love the best. An absolutely beautiful paiting!!

  • She’s stunning!! And thanks so much for sharing the older one, and saying it didn’t come naturally to you. I’m dying to know how to paint faces, but the shadowing is such a puzzle! I was working on something this week, and it looks so lifeless that it drives me crazy! I posted it on facebook, because it was lots of fun to do, but I think you’ll understand how bad my face painting is: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=248603931888272&set=a.248605035221495.58669.100002160014394&type=1&theater
Anyway, so now I know that I can practice and get better! Thanks! :))

  • Hi Julie, thanks for the inspiration 🙂 I love both paintings actually, although I can see how your style has changed and developed. As you say….who knows what the next 3 years will bring?! I have a question, though: what do you do with your old paintings on canvas? I always feel like if I am working on a canvas it needs to be a masterpiece (?) and then I get all in a pickle. But I don’t have room for everything in my house and my family don’t have any wall space later. Where do yours end up?

  • A lof of my canvases end up stacked on a shelf.  Sometimes I switch the art in my house around.  A lot of times I reuse the canvases later.  Paint over them and try my hand at a new painting.

  • I love her! And I love how you’ve shared your painting from 2009 with us. You have come a LONG way. Even now, as I’ve only been painting for 6 months, I cringe at some of the work I did last year. I love how we evolve and change our style and grown more with each painting.

  • Hi Julie! Thanks for the step outs on the paintings. I am taking a beginners painting class and am just learning the basics so I really appreciated seeing how you approached the project. Wish I had the opportunity to chit chat with you and ask about a hundred questions. I have within the past few years convinced myself that drawing and painting can be learned so I have been on a mission. You have made a ton of progress since 2009. I haven’t done a portrait yet. Just still life. Soon I will try a portrait. Then I may even sign up for a portrait painting class.

  • hi julie! LOVE the step outs of your progress – i think that is what i am most curious about at the moment when i see people’s art – the progression and order of things. as for the finished piece – STUNNING! and the comparison of 2009 helps give me a boost. i grew up in a family of very accomplished artists and was always told i was not one. i am beginning to think maybe that isn’t true….slowly gaining a bit of confidence here and there….
    hugs

  • My first thought when I saw your painting was “hmmm, she has come a long way since her first painting of a lady”, I totally remember that post (has it really been 3 years?). The problem with me, is that I tend to try things once or twice, and if I am not able to create the image I have in my mind I give up too early and assume I don’t have the skill/ability for it. You have inspired me to put more effort into really working at my art and having patience with myself to learn something with practice. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

  • You are a true teacher. I have given up on drawing or painting because I just can’t ever make it look the way it looks in my head. But I don’t really practice. I’m so encouraged. Thank you for sharing this!
