Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza!  Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop!  Each post comes with a giveaway.  Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12!  Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours.  The winner will be announced after that.  In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from.  See a complete list here.

StencilHop2011-w150
Today I've got an awesome stencil hop with six stunningly talented paper artiste types:

  • Dina Wakley: Dina is an amazing scrapbooker and art journaler with a distinct style.  She has a wonderful new line of stamps out from Stampington.   She travels all over the world teaching classes and getting students' hands dirty!
  • Suze Weinberg: Suze is the inventor of the Melting Pot.  She has written several craft and calligraphy books, including Melt Art Made Easy with Suze Weinberg, and appeared on the Carol Duvall show multiple times.
  • Bianca Mandity: Bianca is an accomplished teacher and artist.  She's in charge of Copic Markers' Fine Arts Education program and on the faculty at the Indianapolis Art Center.
  • Vicki Boutin: Vicki is on the design teams for 7gypsies and Pink Paislee, among others.  She is a Creating Keepsakes Hall of Famer and her first book, Creative Foundations, is currently available for pre-order.  There's even a Kindle version.
  • Ali Edwards: Ali was a long time Contributing Editor and columnist at Creating Keepsakes Magazine.  She has written several books (including this one, which blew my mind when I started scrapping) and has an extensive line of digital products from Designer Digitals and clear stamps from Technique Tuesday.
  • Christy Tomlinson: Christy is a mixed media artist whose very popular "She" girl canvases have spread across the internet!  She is the owner of the Scarlet Lime kit club and has a wonderful online mixed media shop.

With such a rock star lineup I had to send these girls one of my most favorite stencils, didn't I?

Meet TCW222 Triangle:

TriangleswithLogo
This is one of my favorite designs ever.  I just love the rhythm of it.  It's what I call a "workhorse" stencil.  What does that mean?  It's the kind of thing you use a million times but it never stands out as a "star."  You've seen me use it lots and lots and probably never even noticed.

Remember the tutorial I posted on how to make this tag?

Tag-sm
How about the Halloween tags from this post?

4Tags-sm
I used it on this layout, which I shared last week:

SinceForever-sm
When I announced I had just signed a contract to design stencils, I shared this fabric:

image from balzerdesigns.typepad.com
And this video:

I also used it on this tag, which I know I've shown before:

TriangleTag-sm
And here's a layout from my "Drab to Fab" blog post:

LittleMissReliable-sm(The frame around the photo uses the Chevron stencil in 6×6.)

And in my Stencil 101 class I used the Triangle stencil to demonstrate how best to apply different mediums through a stencil:

Mediums
This is such a workhorse stencil, I love it!

I made a few new projects for today's blog hop.  First up, some Christmas tags!

ChristmasTags-sm

I made a layout that I absolutely *love* and adore:

RingGirl-sm
I basically used the stencil to create texture in the background (and for the little triangle at the top).  I often share layouts where the stenciled design is the focus of the piece, but don't forget that stencils are great for creating texture and atmosphere too.

And finally, here is a spread from my art journal:

AJ-Triangles-sm
AJ-Triangles-sm
AJ-Triangles-sm
This is a much more minimalist spread than I normally do, but I love it.  I think it feels a little Dina-ish to me, which I suppose is appropriate given that she's one of the hop participants today!

Check out the video to see me putting this spread together:

To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Triangle Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:

Which of the projects from the hop is closest to your personal art-making style?

Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post.  You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox.  The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.

Thanks for stopping by!  Now get hopping!

  • Wow, what amazing talent on show on this hop. I loved all the work but my own style would probably be closest to Bianca Mandity, I just love the glittered tree she made with the stencil!! I love how you have shown us how versatile this triangle stencil is too!!

  • Closest to my style would be the Halloween tags. Halloween may be over, but I’m still playing with it and will have to make some tags now.
Thank you so much for your daily inspirations.

  • I’m a simple crafter. I look at some of the art journals and am almost over-whelmed by the color and collage. I loved the way Ali Edwards used the triangle template. If I don’t win it, I”m pretty sure that I’m going to have to BUY it!!! 🙂 Thanks for the lovely inspiration.

  • I love Ali’s style with all the clean lines. However, I love this path of experimenting and exploring to find my own style. You have been the best teacher to help me down this path. I learn so much from you. By the way…your Christmas tree tag is the most adorable creation!
Thanks for a chance to win and possibly add to my Julie stencil collection!

  • All the styles are out of this world and I would find it hard to pin down just one that I like or would aspire to create like. They are all amazing.

  • Two artists are in the running for me: Dina and Bianca. I love Dina’s free flowing colorful work, though Bianca’s tree on a printed substrate opens up other possibilities (such as preparing a base layer on that substrate before adding the tree). My interest and contribution to all this great art journalism, in all of the workshops & community events I’ve attended this year, is in finding a blend of seeing a good composition form and building amazing layers that amplify the message in it.

  • Julie, I like a lot of the posts by the “girls” but I think I like Ali Edwards because I am more linier like she is and then I like yours because of the variety and the layers. I tend to be pulled both ways. I can see all kinds of things to do with your stencils. I love that they are 12X12 & 6X6. So much easier to use than the little squares or rectangles most stencils are.

  • It’s a toss up between Ali’s and Vicki’s layouts. I like the others as well, but I would be using them for scrapbook pages. My 12×12 stencil arrived yesterday, but I wouldn’t mind adding the 6×6 size to my collection. This stencils kick butt. I haven’t been this excited for new stencils in quite some time.

  • Wow, you are amazing and I love the versatility of the stencil. I love what Dina did with the magazine girl over the background. Plus, love all her colors…Like when she did a lighter color of the stencil in the background and a more vibrant in the forefront. Great depth! Great Stencil! Oh, so exciting….Thanks for sharing! K

  • Tough choice, but I’d have to say that Christy Tomlinson is closest to my style, at least at the moment anyway. I’ve been trying to dabble more into mixed media lately and her project using the great stencil is just up my alley right now! 🙂

  • I would say that Ali’s use of the stencil is closest to how I would probably use it right now, but I lean toward vintage, so I aspire to using it the way Bianca did, too!

  • Shucks, I think my earlier comment disappeared. Basically, it said how wonderful I think your designs are and since I just LOVE layering, my fav layout of yours was when you had just signed a contract to design stencils.

  • I can most relate to Dina Wakely’s journal page. The colors are fabulous and lately I’m really into the distressed look. Trying to relax and let some messiness come out and not be exact. Love it!! The stencils are fantastic.

  • Wow! What amazing projects from everyone. This stencil really is so versatile. As to which artist is closest to my personaly style, this is really hard.
I don’t scapbook, but Ali Edwards’ layout calls to me so much I want to take it up.
I’m definately much more of an art journaller lately, and though it’s not exactly up to her amazing standard, i’d really LIKE my style to be like Dina Wakley’s. I LOOOOOOVVVVE her work. I just had a feast of her blog after following the link on this post, and have subscribed to it. I can’t wait to see what she does next.
    Thanks for the blog hop,
    I’t so inspiring!

  • i’m still really just trying to find my own art journal voice, so it’s hard to say which one resembles my ‘style’ – but for now, as i’m in the middle of your 30 days in your art journal class, i’d probably have to say that your pages most closely resemble my ‘style’.
Hoping for that ‘voice’ to emerge….

  • I couldn’t claim that I could produce any of the amazing projects that I experienced on the hop, but if I had to choose the one I’m most likely to emulate, it’d be Ali Edwards. I have a deep love for repeated geometry and love how she used it on her LO! I enjoyed all the projects and feel very inspired by them all! So glad I got to see your stencils put to use in so many wonderful ways!

  • I absolutely loved this hop – my favorite stencil *and* some of my very favorite artists. What a treat.
Dina’s style is most like my own and I tend to use the stencils similar to how she does.
Ali’s though took my thoughts in an entirely different (and inspiring) direction.

  • I love these hops Julie but it’s always soooo hard to choose just one. I would say it’s a tie between your awsome projects, love the tags and Vicki’s layout, like the way she cut hers up for a layout. I’m hoping to take Christy’s SHE ART classes next year, love her ideas.
Thanks for a chance to win these great stencils and for sharing links, it so much fun to see everybody’s.

  • All these artists have such great styles and used your triangle stencils in so many different ways! I love it! Although it is a wide difference, I think my personal art-making style is closest to Ali’s and Christy’s. However, when people think you resemble x or y celebrity, you think, “What???” I’m sure people would look at anything I made and think I was crazy for comparing my work to those talented ladies! :/

  • The scrapper in me loves Ali’s page, but my style is much messier, and my art journals look a bit like Dina’s and Julie’s only with lots of writing, not quite as elaborately layered. I use stencils like this on almost every journal page and would love to have the triangles to add to my stash. Thanks for the chance to win and for the inspiration!

  • Wow! I was searching for Crafter’s Workshop stencils today and I stumbled across your blog. I like the way you combined the two sizes of stencils in your art journaling project. I like to use grid-like stencils for backgrounds too. The speeded up demo video is great for showing the process. I’ll be subscribing to your RSS feed. Thanks!

  • Christy Tomlinson is my absolute favorite this round – I loved seeing her design process evolve in her video tutorial. Her use of multi-media is literal – modeling paste, acrylic paint, sheers and opaques, bits of this and that, altered die cuts, rub-ons, rollagraph stamps, bubble wrap — and all of it gave honor to the glory of your trianges stencil. Wonderful presentation and Christy’s marketing style would have sold me even if I never knew who Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is. Thanks for bringing She Art to my consciousness.

  • hmmmm, that would assume I had a style! I have to be honest every blog I went to (I could not get to Christy Tomlinson’s) I loved – I don’t use glitter, because I tend to make a mess, and I loved Suze, but don’t own the melting pot so I would not be trying that. I can see me using it like Ali, Vicki, Bianca or yourself …. depending on what I was making.
Thanks for all the great inspiration.

I absolutely loved all of the creatins each artist presented but have to say that I feel I’m most like Vicki Boutin’s style in that it’s messy & artsy in a controlled way. I am working on letting loose of the control that sometimes gets in my way creatively-so freeing!

  • I loved all of the projects. In terms of style, I would have to say mine is most like your scrapbook pages JB – lots of white space but still artsy and interesting.

  • Vicki Boutin’s layout is most likely what I would be comfortable doing. I love being crazy with paint and stencils but then like some order to it like her squares all lined up. It also appeals to my quilter side that loves both squares and triangles.
They were all great and I learned something new with each one!

  • Although I am a Christy fan, I have to say I love the tree Bianca did. Always like to see how others use things that I don’t think much about. Crafter’s Workshop stencils are my fav.

  • At this moment Christy is more my style because I am taking her “She Art i and 2” online classes. I also signed up for the Christmas class as well. All of you are my favorites. I follow all your blogs on I-google, with one exception. Today you introuduced me to a new artist (to me), Bianca Mandity! I’m so excited about her art. All of you add so much joy to my life by sharing your talents and art! I will be taking all the classes when I am able. :o)

  • Amazing! First time to your site, and the first time to see a blog hop! I started at Christy’s post first, and I love everything she does, the butterfly was just beautiful. I also love the Christmas tags, can’t way to try something like that! I’ve never made a tag before, this is a whole new world to me! Very exciting.

  • I love how you can take the stencils and use them with any style. I vary in styles. For my pages I am more Ali Edwards clean and simple. But love to go crazy in art journal and add tons of layers. Love the options they give me.

  • Closest to my style are your circle layout and Vicki Boutin’s grid…creating the background paper with layers, textures, mixed mediums, then cutting out shapes and using them on other projects. I always enjoy your fast-forward tutorials. Thank you for the chance to enter.

  • I am a long time Suze Weinberg fan and love playing around with melted wax, etc. so when I saw Suze’s blog about using this workhorse stencil with wax, I knew that was the one closest to my style! One reason might just be all those hours I spent watching Suze demo at Grapevine, TX Rubber Stamp Conventions!!

  • I’m too much of a beginner to compare myself to these artists! But I must say I feel most at home with your wild, messy, fun. It’s so easy to worry about spots, dots, smears, and failure. So I admire the perfect pages and projects very, very much, but I need the inspiration of wild fun to get to my pages.

  • Oh my!! I am totally blown away by all this amazing art! Such a huge variance in what can be created with a stencil. Lovely work…. the artist who I am of a similar style to is Christy T. I have been taking her She Art 1 class and I am making her sort of canvas art at the moment, of course with my own flair. I could only dream to be in such a place as all of the hop artists!! thank you for sharing all this fabdabular work with us!!

  • I absolutely love Ali Edwards’s style. The way she used the stencil by creating the cream embossed backgrounds and then cut out paper for the negative spot reminded me of how triangles are used in quilting. Quilting and working with fabric are my passion right along side scrapbooking. Thanks for all of the ideas for using the triangle stencil. Your tags are gorgeous!

  • I’m with Ali Edwards in that I love geometric patterns. Since I am usually scrapping photos of my son this works well. It’s harder to find things to use to scrap boy pages. Love seeing “what to do” with the stencils. I need that!

  • I think triangle is one of the most difficult shapes to use, so I really should try using the stencil…!

  • I have seen so many ways to use one stencil! I think the triangle stencil would become a staple in my craft room..not one of the purchases I must have and hardly use..this one..yeah…it would get some use! lol
Now as to my style..I don’t think I have a style…maybe… I’m still trying to find my style. I love creating soft romantic pieces, but then I’m drawn to the artsy style (what I consider yours and Christy’s.
And again..I love the gothic style! lol…
I just love going into my craft room and playing with different styles..whatever I’m in the mood for
on that day. :o) And some days..I might have an idea for one certain style but the finished piece comes out a completely different style lol..

  • I’d like to have some of the free form style that Dina has but really, I’m still closer to a linear style like Ali.
    That is one versatile stencil!

  • I enjoyed all of the projects everyone made–I especially appreciate all the time that went into them! However, Ali Edwards is closest to my art-making style. I like creating with abandon but it still needs to be somewhat linear–if that makes sense. I really am so happy her blog sent me to you. I am excited to learn how to use your stencils. I have always admired all the stencils through Crafter’s Workshop and would love to win any of your stencils! Thanks for the chance!

  • Julie, I use watercolor paints in a complex yet keeping the colors clear rather than grungy, so maybe that is closest to your tags and style.

  • I just love this stencil Julie. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Thanks for the blog hop, so many ideas, so much inspiration and creativity in each one. They are all so fabulous but if I had to pick the one closest to my style it would be Christy, particularly in my art journals which is now carrying over into my other artwork.
    thanks for the great giveaway
    Lee:)

  • I just received my mini ‘if you believe’ stencil in the post today all the way from the US of A! Wish I’d ordered the triangle one now as well after doing this hop – so many ideas! Not least in your post 🙂 I’d have to say Dina Wakley’s project is nearest to the way I work (but also Christy’s and your journal page)

  • Oh my….what a great way to show the many uses of one stencil! I love that something as simple as a triangle can be so many things in different eyes. I have this stencil and plan on using a lot more. Thanks for sharing!

  • Wow and more WOW! Thanks so much Julie, for your inspiration and connecting us to five other brilliant artists. Each project was amazing; especially liked Christy’s because I am only starting to explore mixed media and she makes it look easy. Plus she used the Faber Castell Big Brushes, which I recently got. Thanks to Blue Bazaar in Australia who did a piece on your work with the stencils recently. This introduced your talents, which sadly I was ignorant of. Never did a hop before, but am leaving a comment simply to say a huge thank you.
