As I mentioned in my last post, I am trying an art journaling experiment for June. I have drawn a grid of thirty boxes and every day this month I will art journal by drawing a face in one of the boxes.
Here's where I'm at right now:
I've been trying to force myself to do faces that are painted differently or shaped differently or something differently than my go-to norm. It's not easy to get yourself out of a rut. Especially since I know that I'm going to be sharing these faces here on my blog. I want them to be "good." So I have to keep reminding myself: PLAY! Start listening to your own advice, and let that inner critic go!
Let's take a peek at each face (they're larger in these photos than in real life):
I usually shadow my faces so that the light source is right in the center. This one has a right side light source. And I used pen to highlight the hair instead of my usual go-to: gesso.
I love that she has green and yellow and brown skin. And this face is definitely all about the background, right? That's a zentangling pattern that I will be teaching on the upcoming season of Scrapbook Soup!
This was a drive-by face. It was just around midnight and I suddenly remembered that I hadn't done my face for the day. A few pen strokes and a splash of watercolor.
Wait. Is that? Yes, it is! I used one of my new stencils for the background of this portrait. I'm sorry to say that my "little bit of rouge-ing" seems to have dried awkwardly. But I still think she's a blushing bride!
My hand actually cramped up from drawing all those tiny lines. Wimpy, I know. This face was directly inspired by a class I'm taking at MoMA. The instructor had us cut out black paper and create an image with it. Faces were on my mind, so I made a face. This is a drawn representation of the paper face I made.
Went a bit overboard with the shading on the left face. She looks a little feline to me now. But I *love* the tilt of the second girl's head. And the photo doesn't do it justice, but I used a sparkly Sakura glitter pen to color in the word "sisters."
This is me forcing myself to try something different. I really like her hairdo. It's one that I wear very often in the summer! The text is from this sign I found via Pinterest.

A loss for Prima is a gain for The Crafter’s Workshop. Glad to see your talent is being recognized in such a good way. What stencil did you use that gave you the chicken wire look? Love all the girls and your view from the terrace! Not like you have enough to do but PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE a tutorial on drawing faces-:) or a stencil! Oh that would be cool a stencil based on this journal spread. Think of all the faces you could fit on a 12×12 stencil!!!

I am really enjoying seeing all your different faces, Julie! They all look great! Your stencil looks wonderful in the background of the one face, and the Sisters square is so sweet. I really like the one based on your MoMA class, too. Great fun!

oh they are so amazing…I am impress by your imagination and you change your style so easily each one is different and adorable…!!! I keep that idea for the month of July during my vacation, I will have less stock to take with me…Yahhh!!!I continue that projet of daily art journaling in june and I adore!!!
