March of Artist Books is a month-long, hands-on class focused specifically on artist books as an expressive art form, not simply on handmade or decorative bookbinding. While you will learn a wide range of book structures and construction techniques, the emphasis is on how books function as artworks—how format, sequence, materials, and content work together to communicate ideas.
Each day in March, you’ll be guided through a focused lesson that explores artist book structures and approaches, moving from simple folds and constructions toward more complex forms and conceptual considerations. The lessons are intentionally sequenced so that skills build over time. Early techniques become tools you reuse and adapt later in the month, allowing your understanding of artist books to deepen rather than reset with each project.

The Class Structure
What can you expect from this workshop?
- March of Artist Books offers a new set of skills and ideas to explore each week.
- A big new idea is introduced every Sunday during a one-hour live Zoom gathering at 12pm EST.
- Yes, Zooms are recorded and posted to the classroom.
- Every Monday – Saturday in the month of March, a new video tutorial is released. These are short (generally 4-5 minute) tutorial videos that give you additional skills/book structures/techniques to work with.
- How many books you make is totally up to you. You can do them all or pick and choose.
- We will spend the first three weeks working on book structures and the last two weeks filling them.
- You will have access to the online classroom for one year, until the end of April 2027.
Finally, this class is designed for artists at any stage. You don’t need bookbinding experience, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment!

Hi Julie.. will the class include painting ideas or is the focus only on the structure of the book and how to make it?
The first three weeks are all about the book structures. The last two weeks are focused on filling the books. There will be ideas on painting and printing, but no step-by-step do this and then do that in terms of painting.
