Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza!  Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop!  Each post comes with a giveaway.  Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12!  Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours.  The winner will be announced after that.  In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from.  See a complete list here.

StencilHop2011-w150 Today I've got an awesome stencil hop with five of my favorite paper artiste types:

  • Mou Saha: You have probably seen Mou's scrapbook pages throughout Creating Keepsakes Magazine, where she is a Contributing Writer.  She is also on the design teams for a myriad of companies including Anna Griffin, 7gypsies, Faber-Castell, and Crate Paper.
  • Kelly Purkey: Kelly is a scrapbooker and graphic designer who has designed product for American Crafts, and more recently for Studio Calico.  She travels all around the country teaching scrapbooking classes!
  • Amy Tan: She is the girl behind "Amy Tangerine" — a line of scrapbooking products just released by American Crafts, and the hip t-shirt label by the same name, available at stores such as Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus.
  • May Flaum: Her most recent book, Scrapbook Workshop, is currently available for sale.  May is also a long-time teacher at Big Picture Classes and a Contributing Editor to Scrapbook Update.
  • Roben-Marie Smith: She is an art journaler extraordinaire!  Roben-Marie has been widely published, teaches classes both online and in-person, and has a fantastic mixed-media store (which sells stencils, by the way)!

I sent these girls both of the "word" templates.  Yesterday's TCW217 Trust Your Heart:

Trustyourheartlogo
And today's featured stencil TCW216 If you believe:

Ifyoubelievelogo
They were invited to use either or both stencils.

As for me, I'm going to show off some ideas for "If You Believe."

Like yesterday's word stencil, this one is also a mask.  I was inspired to make it after painting this painting:

IfYouBelieveYouCan-sm
I just really, really love the saying I came up with for this painting — and I think it's true.

I used it in my art journal:

ArtJournalPage-sm
And on a canvas (which did not photograph well — it's shiny and glossy and has so much depth of color and texture in person):

UTEECanvas-sm
UTEECanvas-flower
UTEECanvas-flower
And on this layout I "stamped" with the mask:

IfYouBelieveYouCan-sm
I also used the Fragmented Flower and Punchinella stencils on this layout (to create the center area's background).

IfYouBelieveYouCanDetail1-sm
Lately, I'm liking doing a lot of journaling on my layouts.  It's not always easy to find a place for so much writing on a "pretty" layout, but I'm trying.

IfYouBelieveYouCanDetail2-sm
I always try to do something to make my layouts "special."  A little extra touch that someone else might not have thought of.  On this layout I took a leftover flower I had glittered for another project and I made two little tags and linked them all together with embroidery floss.

IfYouBelieveYouCanDetail3-sm
And there's that big beautiful title, done with the If You Believe stencil.  But how?  Well, there are actually several different mediums you can use.  Check out the video tutorial:

Here are the samples from the video:

StampingMediums-sm
And don't forget that you can pick out a single word from the quote if you'd like:

Believe-sm
To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the If You Believe Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:

Which of the projects from the hop is closest to your personal art-making style?

Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post.  You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox.  The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.

Thanks for stopping by!  Now get hopping!

  • Wow! All of the artwork is be-a-u-tiful! If I had to pick one which is pretty tough to with these ladies.I would say I’m more similar to Kelly Purkey but by no means am I near any of the talent you have put together for your blog hop. Awesome stuff!!

  • I love Robin-Marie’s style–that’s what I’d like my canvasses to look like. I also enjoyed seeing Amy’s work–gorgeous.
What a great hop! I know I’ll be back to visit later in the day for a second (or third or forth) look!

  • Those are all great artists. But my favorite would be Roben-Marie. I love doing journal pages. I’ve only done a few, but as soon as I can have some of those stencils, I’ll do some more. Thanks for the chance,

  • Robin-Marie touched my heart as I looked at her pages. I love the verse on the stencil of course. Sometimes as a mom, I sound like a broken record saying something similar to my kids that range in ages from 27-10. Then I have been recently reminded by my own mom, the very same sentiment.
Roben’s layout with hearts, circles, squares and colors captured my emotions. Thank you for sharing her with us.

  • They are all so wonderful. Robin-Marie’s, however, just made my heart feel happy looking at it. The whimsical style she expresses is wonderful.
Great job ladies! The stencil is so awesome, Julie!!

  • I love your stencils!!!!! After looking at all the different ways to use them I would have to say I would be close to Amy Tan’s layout, but all the girls did an amazing job with them. Oh and I love love love the way you used them yourself, so much to learn, the possiblities are endless.

  • I love Roben-Marie’s style ! That anything goes, playful but with a bit of an edge, brightly colored style fills me up. (Kinda like yours does, too, Julie ! )
I received the Hands Stencils that I won a few days ago!!!I can’t wait to use them.
Here’s to art journaling and all the great toys that goes with it. Cheers and Thanks, Julie !

  • I would have to say Roben-Marie–she is showing some felting and sewing on her page in addition to the mixed media collage, and I like to incorporate those features.

  • My style is most like May Flaum’s. I use alot of varied items to get dots, tire tracks, moons, you name it, onto my canvas. I really enjoy an interesting amount of movement going.
I did enjoy looking at all of the artist’s creations. So varied! Sometimes I see art so different from mine and I feel I wish I could do that! I felt that way about these artists’ works. I enjoyed the hop!

  • I’m so new to crafting that I’m unsure what a “hop” is, but out of all of the projects on this page, I love the multicolored “if you believe” with the thick color and flower background. I could never do that, so I like your stamping with the stencil. I love how that turns out. Thanks for your teaching!

  • So much inspiration from all! I guess I can relate to Mou Saha’s project the most with her use of that single awesome stamp (which I have!). I tend to use one or two predominant stamps in my attempts at beginning art journaling. I really like how Kelly Purkey cut out parts of the stencil for pattern paper. Love Amy Tan’s dimension and May Flaum’s layers. Robyn-Marie Smith’s talent for color wash backgrounds – so beautiful! I seem to be color wash background challenged. Love the stencils and love the ideas now swimming in my head.

  • These are Gorgeous, the versatility is awesome! Loved all the designs on the hop! I’ve never tried to use my stencils as a stamp before so I loved your video! I’m definately gonna give it a try! All the projects created were fantastic but I think the closest to my style would be Amy Tan. I love her whimsical type of scrapbooking which I tend to lean towards when I scrap. But I also love RobenMarie’s journal pages with all the the fantastic layers. I love to layer like her in my journals (although they never come out as wonderful as hers!). I can’t wait to see what you do with your other stencil designs!

The blog hop was awesome today. All very “do-able.” But the closest to my personal style is probably Kelly Purkey. Thanks, Julie!

  • I love that flower painting!!! Idon’t really know how to pick since this hop is all super stars but I would say Amy Tan is closest to my style. I’m so lad you got together with Crafter’s Workshop- as I commented in another blog- these stencils got them out of a funk- I went to a store recently and the display is front and center now- before the stencils were all languishing in the corner. High Five Julie- you rock.

  • JULIE, YOU ROCK! I have been puzzling over this for days (how to use a stencil/template as a stamp) but never thought to just TRY it. ARGGHH! Thank you for this!
As far as the hop, I luuuuurrrrvveee Mou Saha’s work.
(Oh, and I forgot to say this yesterday- PLEASE make an entire stencil of the half circle/fan design you use in your “Balzer Designs” logo- it’s on the Henna Hands template, but I really would love an ENTIRE stencil with it! pretty please?!)

  • Hmmm…who’s style is closest to mine?: I’m not really seeing my style here but, I’ll go w/ KP or Amy Tan as there pieces really stood out to me…loved their color choices (I’m loving shades of yellow lately) & how “simple” yet, striking they came across.
Thank you so very much!! Blessings ~H♥~

At least that’s what I aspire to. Her work is so full of color, movement and joy.

  • It’s a tough call for me. Right now my two favorite art forms are canvas and my art journal. To top it off, I love the orange and yellows in your canvas but I’m also going thru a black and white stage. Julie, it’s just too hard to pick a favorite from the two.

  • Pure awesomeness!! I love what everyone did but I squealed a little when I saw Roben-Marie’s. This was the first I’ve seen her work and am glad to have found her!

  • Lots of fabulous inspiration here, and a tough call. I’d say Kelly Purkey’s style is closest to my aspirations, but I’m just getting started with these mediums, and have a loooong way to go!

  • Genius use of your stencils. LOVE your results & your photos all look amazing. Can’t imagine how glorious all that texture & colour looks in person, though.

  • My style is most like Kelly Purkey’s, but I’m really inspired by all of these lovely works of art. I need to just relax and let myself play instead of worrying about if it’s “right”.
Great blog hop, do it again!

  • Wow, such artistry. These ladies are so talented but if I had to choose one project that matched my style it would be your “If You Believe” layout. Great tutorial..I can’t wait to try this technique with some of the stencils I have.

  • picking a favorite is hard. i think today it is a tie between all 3 of roben-marie’s pages (can’t pick only 1 of these either, i like them all) and your red flower painting. i have been building up a stencil collection over the last year. i have several of the older crafters’ workshop ones. don’t have any word stencils though, so this one would be great.

  • Another tremendously helpful, and entertaining, tutorial, thank you. The project closest to my style is your layout on the grid paper, using the mask as a stamp. Stamping is my first love and I don’t think it would have occurred to me to use a mask in this way. The three different inking mediums opened all sorts of possibilities. I also liked and related to the way Kelly Purkey cut out some of the areas within the letters and backed them with patterned paper. Her choice of colors was very appealing. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.

  • This was a very tough question! I had to mull it over for days! I feel like a newbie who has not yet developed a personal art style, though I have been art journaling more as of late, trying to identify one (or two? or three?). So, while I can only hope and strive for it, I would say Amy Tan is closest to my direction. I really like the hand-stitching she does on her pages. 🙂

  • I’m not sure if my comments are going through. I tried twice on the last giveaway a few days ago, but I still don’t see them.
To answer the question: My art style is still evolving. I saw lots of similarities with all of the projects, mostly involving bright colors, which is what I utilize most. I found inspiration in the many ways the same stencils were used.
Have you realized that your word stencils are all uplifting and happy thoughts? I am willing to bet that there are common themes among artists in dealing with pain, anger, grief, block, frustration, and heartache. These pages also tend to be worked on the longest, with lots of layers. Stencils/masks would be very useful and inspiring.
