I mentioned on my blog a week or so ago that I'm contributing a project to Maggie Holmes' Happy Little Moments online class at Studio Calico.  (Class starts on March 1.)

I'm allowed to share some peeks, but I won't be able to share the full project, even after the class is over.

SCclass

So if you want to see my book in its entirety, you have to be a member of the class.

JFBCoverPageDetail-sm

You can buy the class and the kit separately.  You don't need the kit to complete the project unless you want to do it exactly as Maggie has.  In the class instructions Maggie takes you through the process of preparing a vintage book to become a scrapbook filled with dimensional embellishments.  Then she tells you how she assembled each page.

JFBp15-16Detail1-sm

So what is it exactly that I'm doing for the class?  I made an altered book – in my style – using the kit and following Maggie's instructions (mostly).  I am not contributing any instructions to the class.

JFBp5-6Detail1-sm

I had a ton of fun making this book and I was reminded that there's always something new to learn.  I've been altering books and scrapbooking for many years, but I picked up two cool new tricks that I'm definitely going to be using again!

If you use the links below I will receive a small percentage of the sale.  So if you're going to purchase either the class or the kit, I would appreciate your using the links.  Thanks!  :)

The class is $10.  Buy it here.

The class kit is $39.75 (image below).  Buy it here.

MaggieClasskit)

I've heard that there are just five kits left.

And now I get to give away a spot in the class!  If you want to win a spot in Maggie's "Happy Little Moments" class, leave me an answer to the following question:

What is the best online class you've ever taken and why?  If you haven't taken an online class yet, why not?

I'll announce the winner on Friday (February 24).

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. If you'd like to win a gift certificate to Studio Calico in general, you can post a link to a tag that incorporates stamping (using any stamps) to this post on the Studio Calico blog.  Good Luck!

  • My favorite online class has been Full Tilt Boogie with Mary Ann Moss, because I learned how to make my very own books with all of my favorite papers. This helped me to go beyond my comfort zone and to actually start from background paper with an image already in place, instead of the usual white background. Love a challenge!

  • My favorite online class that I’ve actually “finished” is Baker’s Dozen on Big Picture Scrapbooking. We gathered specific groups of supplies and looked for certain types of pictures, all from our stash. Then we paired a set of supplies with a set of photos and made an unexpected type of layout. It really took the stress out of pulling supplies and choosing photos (added mystery instead), and I was really able to focus on the story being told. I plan on repeating it annually.

  • Hi Julie, I didn’t take so many on line classes, just a couple from you, from Christy Tomlinson, from A.Burke.
My fave has been one with you a couple of years ago, sorry I don’t remember the name(something like 30 day x 30 $). I liked because it was daily, cheap, and with lots of tecniques, tutorials, and finished pieces . I’m going to take one with Andy Skinner in a couple of days. So, i’m a fan of on-line courses!

  • The best online class is a tough question- I’ve taken many (my family thinks I need an intervention) but the one that had rocked my world was Dina Wakely’s. She was my first amazing online class, an happily not my last!
She had videos that made me feel like I was sitting next to her. She talked and created. She explained what she was doing and why. She made mistakes and I got to see how it was handled. Her class felt personal and empowering. When each video ended I was excited to experiment and play.
Since her class I have been drawn to the instructors who capture that same feeling for me. I am happy to say that there are many instructors who invite you in to sit and create with them on their instructional videos.

  • Julie, I am in my own happy little moment right now. I just started taking an online class with Christy Tomlinson, called Creative Color, and am absolutely loving it. It is my favorite to date. I loved it so much, I signed up for another one of her classes, called “She Had Three Hearts,” that is an art journaling class. Her techniques remind me of your so much. She, like you, are so encouraging and inspiring. I hope to join you in your daily journaling soon after that. Also, I just bought another one of your masks to add to my growing collection. Keep up the great work!

Boy was I wrong! Since that class, I have taken every class you hace offered, your friend’s Nat’s classes, and the Lettering class with JoAnn that you recommended. I am amazed at all of you,, online teachers, the videos that you all produce, the instructions you provide, and above all else what I have been able to accomplish without even leaving my home. So, thank you Julie for that first class on stencils.

  • Hi, Julie! I have actually never taken an online class. One has never really appealed to me that much…until I saw THIS one and I just knew I HAD to take it! (I’m relatively new to your blog…so your classes can’t be included in that! lol) There was just something about the little sneak peek and the description that really shouted out to me! To win it would be FANTASTIC! Thanks so much for the chance! :o)

i’ve just taken one/ no 2 online photo/collage class, working up images with not so great person. – was excited and happy at first, but not great experience, no feedback and no updates or sharing, as the person taking the groups had some dramas during that time.
Sad, as I was keen, but with no encouragement, you lose heart for the tasks, and no reason to keep at it. Even if we’d been connected to each other, we could have kept going and learned and shared together!
I felt annoyed, it put me off, actually, for a long time. Your 30 days course sounds sparky and lovely… mostly i’ve bought books, and worked thru processes with friends, over time here. And watched heaps of bookbinding tutorials, so I could start making books. I tend to do workshops live – here in Australia, when I can, or have sessions with friends and share ideas and help each other out. The online art/craft thing has a way to go, here I think. Just started doing one with Tam from Willowing tho, a simple art and journal one, she seems quite tuned in and supportive. Thats good.
thanks enjoy the Calico experience and have a great week !

  • I haven’t taken an on-line class, yet. But I do watch lots of tutorials and how to’s from Swirlydoos, Grungy Girls, Natasha, Gabrielle, Lisa Gregory, Tim Holtz, Prima and or course yours. I just haven’t tried a specific class. I haven’t figured out how to manage watching the tutorial/class in one location and going back to do my work/play without computer access in another area. When I figure that out, I will certainly try a class.

  • I’ve taken a lot of online classes over at Big Picture Classes and I’ve loved all of them. I’m really loving May Flaum’s A Curious Scrapbooker’s Field Guide that I’m taking right now. I also took your Stencils 101 class and really loved that. The Stencils 101 class and May’s Field Guide class I especially like because I learned new techniques that I could actually do & easily find the materials to do them with. I’ve purchased some of your stencils since then and am using them in May’s class.

  • I have taken Kelly Rae Roberts class. She was honest, encouraging, and thorough, (my favorite).
Also enjoyed Alisa Burke. The others weren’t so special or I would remember them :>)I am just now getting into journals and would love to take some classes where I can actually see what they are doing. I am a visual person, must see to do.

  • The best online class I’ve ever taken is Julie Pritchard’s Layers Love class. And since hers was the first, I got so spoiled, that some of the classes I’ve taken since, was a disappointment. So I kept going back to her classes and enjoyed all I’ve taken. But, yes, it is true, I didn’t take one of yours (yet) 😀

  • I splashed out on this kit because it was simply irresistable…and also because finally someone took internationals into consideration and had the kits available waaay ahead of time so it was able to reach me! I have taken several online classes, some more memorable than others, but my very best was one by Iris Babao Uy that she offered in aid of charity after the hurricanes in the Phillipines. We constructed a page using fabric, sounds simple now but it was years ago when I was way less adventurous and she was lovely. Everything was so clear and well organised. I hope to win the class, having already spent $40 on the kit. Sounds crazy after already spending on the kit not wanting to fork out for the class – but if I don’t win it any where I’ll be back to click through from here no doubt LOL…

I also took the stamp class, which i also LOVED, but i really loved the daily format of the 30 days class. (i’m currently taking Joanne Sharpe’s letter love, and i’m signed up for 21 secrets)

  • There were a couple: Big Picture had a macro photography course that prompted me to buy my first close up lens for my Canon SLR (LOVE), Color Colour by Nic Howard, and your great course 30 Days in You Art Journal. 2011 was a year for learning new techniques and I love books so I wanted to dive deep into art journaling. I had started a couple of journals in 2006-2008 but I felt my technique was starting to look the same on each page – I needed to work with new techniques and colorful materials to make each page tell its own story. And it’s going well!

  • The best online class that I have taken was with Nat where I could go to the class and review the videos many times and see the supply lists as well. I learned about layering and texturing. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • I have taken 2 on-line classes, both from Christy Tomlinson. I liked her so much the first time — I decided to take another class with her. Taking a class with her is like being in the room with her. She is pleasant to watch and fun to be with !!!! She is very hands on …. and I am the type of person that needs TO SEE in order to absorb !! I took another class with Claudine Hellmuth — but as much as I like Claudine’s work —- I so much more enjoyed Christy’s class … and then I recently purchased your faces video … and I am likin’ you … alot !!!! I like on line classes because you can take them at your own pace … and, some, have them forever … I like that !!! Hope I win !!!!

  • I think my favorite online class and the first one I ever took was A Prompt A Day by Kelly Kilmer. Getting that kick in the pants daily, established a habit and it is a rare day that I don’t get down to my art table for art journaling and bookmaking and more, more, more!

The class that I got the most out of was Christy Tomlinson’s first class – because it opened my eyes, just when I most needed it.

I just discovered online art classes this past fall so haven’t taken very many (although my hubby is a bit horrified at how many I’ve already done–hee-hee!)
My favorite so far is LifeBook 2012—because new projects come every other week so it is not overwhelming to keep up.

  • I haven’t taken that many online classes but I am really enjoying your 30 days of art journaling. I appreciate so much that you not only explain what you’re doing but WHY. and thank you for giving us “permission” to not complete the project in one sitting! I’m not good with deadlines to begin with 🙂 knowing that it’s ok to come back to a project again, and again makes it so much more enjoyable!

I just started taking online art classes a year ago and I would have to say that Christy Tomlinson’s,” She had 3 hearts” ecourse is my favorite. It was so inspiring from the aspect of learning so many new techniques and to seeing how so many products can be used.
What I most enjoyed is Christy’s personality. She reminded me so much of you. She is so real and authentic. I loved how she loved her mistakes. How anything was OK. It was all about the process, having fun and making beautiful art.

  • Hi Julie, I am so totally new to the world of online classes! Last fall I happened upon Carla Sonheim’s site and signed up for her husband Steve’s photo silly class. I learned so much about my little point and shoot camera and I learned how to use flickr! Right now I am in Carla’s Silly 5 class and I feel like a little kid–I literally get all jump up and down excited each day when I open her e-mail to find out what she has in store for us today! I just read through the list of comments here and thought, “OMG! There’s more!!!” Do you know of a site somewhere that would list all the wonderful opportunities to be creative? I love following your blog–your style is great! Thanks 🙂

  • I took a class with Donna Downey on Big Picture Workshops and it was GREAT. There were 9 projects (books, atcs, collages, aprons, bags using all kinds of mediums; water colors, pan pastels fluid acrylics, etc) and very technique driven. I loved her videos because they were so detailed and the projects all came out great.

  • Well Julie, so far I have been soewhat disappointed in most of the online classes I have taken. Makes me a little nervous to invest the $$. I guess the best one so far, was one offered by Amy Tan last year. I bought the kit that went with and was a little disappointed with it, but did learn a few new techniques and enjoyed her videos.

I purchased this class four years ago, and the really neat part is every year since I’ve been able to take it all over again for free (it has new material each year). I now have four beautiful December albums thanks to Shimelle. Even better this class started me on my online learning journey. I had such a good experience with Shimelle and the JYC community that I started taking a variety of classes from many different people, and I have learned something in each one. Thanks for the chance to win!

  • I’ve taken several on-line classes…some very intense and time consuming when it comes to the “touchy” “feely” side of “finding yourself in your art”…not my cup of tea. I appreciate the simple ones that have a project and you get clear instructions and videos to produce at your own pace. Mary Ann Moss and Theresa McFadden are my favorites. But I also appreciate Donna Downey, Paulette Instal and Ali Edwards. I prefer on-line classes over retreats any day ;}

But I also appreciate Donna Downey, Paulette Instal and Ali Edwards. I prefer on-line classes over retreats any day ;}

  • My first and favorite was your It’s Sew Easy class! Your videos, teaching style, and your input and that of the other students in discussion/chat were like being there. But with the flexibility of taking the lesson at different times of day as my schedule permitted, and being able to process each lesson before moving on to the next thing–my creativity definitely blossomed. Now I feel a bit lonely if I am not taking an online class of some sort. Haha!

  • My one and only class was Shimelle’s Journal Your Christmas. I liked it a lot, but I am reluctant to take any other classes. I always end up thinking that I’d rather spend that money on actual supplies. But I am beginning to realize that there is always something new to learn, and what’s the point of having supplies if you’re not using them to their fullest potential.

  • I have only taken a few online classes and they have all been multi-media in some form. I think my favourite was Jennifer McGuire’s ‘Inspirational Canvas’ class because there were daily videos demanding I do a little a day so it made it manageable: I didn’t feel overwhelmed to be able to find a lot of time in one go.
I have already started collecting old hardbacks begging to be altered: I would LOVE to win this class! The sneak peaks of your book look fantastic.

  • My favorite on line class has to be “30 Days in your Art Journal” that you taught last year. I enjoyed the class so much, there was such positive feedback from you and the other members of the class, plus having art in my life each and every day was wonderful. I have not missed a day since the class started back in November.

  • I was introduced to art journaling when I first saw one of SuziBlu’s youtube videos. The first online class I ever took was how to draw her petit dolls. I loved it because it was very informative as well as entertaining and as an instrutor she was very engaging. I haven’t had the pleasure on taking many other online classes since as some tend to be quite costly. The affordable classes I’ve tried tend to seem a bit repetitive and found most of what they thought on Youtube. That being said I love artists’ youtube videos/tutorials, theyre like super mini classes 🙂

I had an amazing time in the stencil class that I had to take your class at the Ink Pad in NYC! I’m really excited about this class that’s coming up with Studio Calico! Many blessings and creativity!

  • I’ve taken several online classes and the one that’s been the most soul healing was Brave Girls. However, the one that helped me most with my art, which is where I’ve been totally stuck, was your class 30 days in your journal. It’s my favorite for several reasons. There are so many techniques that I hadn’t seen before. All the lessons are easy to understand and there are so many alternatives to the products used. This class was healing in that everyday is a just a part of the process, not the whole process. This was very enlightening for me. I felt if I didn’t finish or know how I was going to finish a page, it was worthless. NOT so!! I am still savoring the videos and each time I see some more than before.

The best online class I was in, to date, was maybe one from Tamara Laporte (aka Willowing).
I can’t wait to see what you and the other teachers in 21 Secrets will share (and I’m honored to be one of the teachers with you all).

I liked your “30 Days in Your Art Journal” class the best, of the classes I have completed. I am currently taking 3 online classes but they are not over yet so I won’t review them until they are completed. Thanks for the chance to win a spot in this class.

  • Hello Julie, I am pretty new at online classes, but I just took Tracy Bautista’s at Strathsmore Paper website and it was really good, there are so many classes to choose that is hard to make the right decision.

  • I really can’t decide which is the best online class I ever had – both of them are yours! 30 Days in Your Journal and Stamp Carving are both exceedingly fun, have taught me tons of things and opened up new possibilities for me. I absolutely love the style of our classes, the way your are talking (very whitty) and how you are absolutely spontaneous in your videos. This is so liberating! (Although I have to admit that it took me a little time to get used to your rather quick talking, not being a native English speaker.)

Strathmore has some great instructors and classes for free–everyone should check them out!

  • I have taken many online classes and find it difficult to choose a favorite! I love Cathy Zielske’s clean and simple scrapbooking style and her sense of humor. Ali Edwards always does such a good job of getting us to tell our stories. Christy Tomlinson is a very good teacher while at the same time being very entertaining. Dina Wakely opened up the doors to art journaling for me…..and the list goes on. We are so fortunate to live in a time when all of these classes are just a click away!

  • 1)Your “30 Days in your Journal”…loved loved loved your talking and teaching and so many techniques and new goodies to try. (All of your are good and I’ve taken almost all of them now for these reasons.)
2)Then your “Stencil class”..although it didn’t cost anything I really learned alot.
3)Then Em Falconbridge taught a painting class for BPS..it came with detailed instructions in PDF form…good but not as good as video (I am an auditory learner 🙂
4)Then Shimelle’s Learn Something New Everyday…just a good class for thinking about what is around me..love her layering.

Fun fun! If I can’t have Sally in person, Online is the next best thing! 🙂 She’s awesome. If you don’t know her yet, she’s at sallyjean.com.

I also love Kelly Kilmer’s art journaling classes–I’ve taken 2 on-line classes and she is a great teacher and shares tons of information!! Oh yeah…Pam Carriker is a great teacher and I am very much enjoying tutorials from Christy Tomlinson! Luckily for me, I have not found any teacher I don’t like yet so I’d better shut up before I list all my teachers!!!

  • Julie, I have taken only one online class from Jessica Sprague and it was a great journaling prompt free class she offered a few years ago. I would love to alter a book; have been thinking about doing something like this for quite some time. I would love the opportunity to win this class from Maggie! I follow your blog and Maggie as well (and follow you both on instagram which I love!)

  • My favorite online class was “A Prompt A Day” with Kelly Kilmer. I took the class for the entire year it was first offered. The class got me doing a page every day. By offering prompts for painting, collaging and journaling, it took the fear out of the blank page. Kelly is the person I credit for really getting me jazzed about art journaling.

The project that I created and love a lot is from Claudine Hellmuth’s online technique class…in the digital scrapping world there have been some outstanding ones too, and last year, the 21 Secrets art journaling series was absolutely AWESOME!

  • I crave videos and tutorials (Just finished watching your scratch art video) I made a tag with that technique today. THANKS!! Videos and tutorials provide so much inspiration and they help to build confidence for a newbie. I have not taken online classes-except free ones(Big Picture Studio). Why not? I have little disposable income. I would love to win this class, but I admit I would be a little scared not having or being able to afford the kit. Thank you so much for the chance to win.

I also love all of Alisa Burke’s classes as well. A huge benefit of your classes as well as Alisa’s – forever access. I hate classes that don’t give you that. Life just gets in the way sometimes and it’s also nice to go back later when you need/want additional ideas and inspiration.
