I enjoy abstract paintings but I have a lot of trouble creating them. I've tried to analyze why. I think there are a few reasons:
- I really like people. I am naturally drawn to any figural art.
- I am a maximalist. More, more, more, more, and then try to cram in some more.
- I am a storyteller. Kind of an overbearing storyscreamer actually. I'm trying to work on not needing to tell the story so clearly when I create. Perhaps it comes from being a scrapbooker? Or maybe just a control freak.
Whatever the reason, in an attempt to create an abstract painting I made this big mess on a canvas:
And then I made it worse.
So I put the canvas away for a month or so.
On Friday I dragged it back out and decided to paint over the whole disaster and try again. I started painting without a thought in my head other than to play with color and texture.
But I needed a story. I told you, I'm a storyscreamer. So I turned the canvas all around, added a bit more paint, and voilá:
There is so much texture — both from the painting underneath and the lines I scratched into the top painting.
I made an effort to not completely cover the painting underneath and I think it adds so much to what would otherwise be a very simple painting.
I'm very pleased to have created a painting that I'm happy with, from the ashes of a painting (really two paintings) that I hated. Now I just have to find somewhere to hang it….
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I know what this painting's title is and what the story is, but I'm wondering if you do? I'd love it if you'd leave me a comment letting me know what you think the title and/or story of this canvas is!
Oh, I just love it!! Love the colors, and all the texture and spills. However, I have no idea what the story is, and I was wondering, looking between the first stage and the stage where you say you added the story. I’d love to know the story!

I liked the first one. It looked like a cityscape with people walking in the rain. The final rendition looks like fish in the sea and it’s raining.

This is awessome…. I immediately thought about the sea so here´s my title suggestion: “Under the Surface”.

I’d say it’s about ideas that blossom from mysterious fodder! I really like the part where the other painting shows through. Inspiring.

A lot of us are definitely picking up a natural water theme (rain or ocean). Definitely the ocean has about as much going on under the surface as this painting, but I quite like the thought of cleansing rain, washing away a bit of the old, though not completely. Rain is refreshing, giving life to new ideas little by little. But… I do live in Washington 🙂

It has somewhat to do with water and a beach/seashore and a thunderstorm coming up… Somehow the title ‘gone fishing’ sticks to my mind (although I think that is more of MY story then that your painting pictures this title…) Anyway, I like it a lot!

Interesting how everyone sees something different, and probably not what you had in mind, huh? I would call it Sky, Water and Everything Within.
I liked the original piece, which really appealed to my love of all colors.

Still Waters Run Deep. The story is peeking out from under the waves which seem to be disturbed and frothy. The scene is calmish due to the colors but also has stuff happening that we don’t know about – actually it is a really nice abstract! Success!!!!!

I brought both the original and the finished piece into photoshop and rotated them 90 degrees at a time. Just to see what they would look like. I actually liked the original. When you rotate that design, you can clearly see that all the visual weight is on the left side. Reading it left to right it works. Any other direction, not so much. I did the same with the finished piece. The use of the blues and greens definitely gives it an environmental feel. Rotating this piece there are some other possibilites for the white. Like something dripping and forming a puddle, or stretched. But our eyes want to make “sense” even of an abstract so we put the green at the bottom, like grass or darker shades of underwater. I like this exercise. Hope you do more.

This is a total guess, but I see rain when I look at the painting, so I’ll title it Rainy Day.

I can see the rain making puddles in a stream… the flowers look like water lilies… I think it is about cleansing… washing away the old… and fresh beginnings… and because a steam is always moving… I think it is also about flow… and movement… it is just gorgeous Julie… I love it…

After a rainy day, the flowers bloomed profusely! That is what this looks like to me, Julie. I really kind of liked the first rendition of your painting, but I think the painted over, very textured painting you have now is fabulous!!! I also love that you just painted over what you did not like and tried again. Kudos!

I just tried my first abstract this weekend. So I’m loving this! I see it as being about fresh ideas rising up because of the rain. My 14 yo son sees cows in a field. I love the bits of the earlier one coming through.

I got peace and calm- I like the little white circle on the side- that reads like people to me- gazing into a warm and loving future? I don’t know! 🙂 I love the first painting! The color and shape mix was really cool. I also really like how you scratched into the paint for the football/fishy looking motifs in the final version. I really love abstract art. I enjoy it as a beautiful thing and try not to make it mean more unless the piece is overtly telling me with words or figures. Many times I view a work for a while then read the title so I have my first impression then I read the artist statement or title to enrich what I first thought. This is a greta post- actually all the posts this month (and last) have been great! Learning a lot from you Julie!

I am taking a beginning painting class right now and recently learned just how tough abstracts really are. I liked the original. The black took it to a very harsh place. And I really like where it ended up. My title is “Blooms from Ashes”. The story being don’t give up, you can make something grow in the face of death for something else. Hmm, that may be genius or morbid, not quite sure!

As I look at your piece through the changes I see youth, in all of its passion and joy and open options, then middle age with its calm but still desire to experience fun and lastly senior age, with it’s memories, and peace and contentment. Since you are still so young I am sure that my view of the stages of your piece is not what you intended. That’s what’s so great about art….we all see it with different eyes.

“Looking At The East River Through My Window”
All the white is on the window but it drips into the river. The scratches are also on the glass, giving the impression the resident longs to get out.
That is what first came to mind. Great painting that makes one think.

All the white is on the window but it drips into the river. The scratches are also on the glass, giving the impression the resident longs to get out.

i adore it! i like seeing creative process. i immediately thought emerging, evolving, or peeking through. for it’s the elements beneath sandwiched in layers brief glimpses & calmness over a sea of color below.

Not enough coffee yet this morning to get deep and analytical. My first thought-April showers bring May flowers. Now, I have about a third of a cup of my caffeine hit making it’s way to my brain, and I’m thinking about a person with a calm exterior hiding some raging emotions. They are fragile, in that a little rain, an easy gentle rain, but rain nonetheless, will start to wash that exterior away, letting bits of that emotion come forth.
I do hope you will share YOUR story about the painting. I would love to know about the scratched shapes that call to my mind high school biology and microscopic paramecium. 🙂

I really like Pia’s title of your painting – “Under the Surface.” Another title for it “Finding the Answer.” We’re all anxious to hear the story of your painting.

I love the finished canvas but I have to say that I really loved it the first time with all the bright colors. I thought it had great energy and a nice flow. As for the end result, the first thing that came to my mind was “Digging thru the Layers, The Flowers Spring Forth.” I hope you’re going to share what your story/title is with us 🙂

I feel very serene looking at this. I love the colors and composition, and knowing that there are stories underneath makes it even better. My initial reaction was “A Walk in the Rain.” I had the memory of the chalk drawings in “Mary Poppins,” as they washed away, but not before there was time to jump into to one of them. Just lovely.

I see a lake with fish and a single rain cloud. Maybe some rocks or bobbers in the water or waterlillies floating on top. Love the colors and texture.

I loved the colorful abstract, but I loved the process of covering and giving birth to a new work of art while still honoring the history. As soon as I saw the finished piece I thought of “Picnic at Hanging Rock” because of the allusion to a hidden mystery.

This is what I love about art- there is a story behind it that the artist experienced but there is also the story that the viewer experiences- since you have left room for the imagination each person gets to put a bit of themselves into it.
So, here is my version of it-the white circles are lunar worm things in the Caribbean that glow at night when mating but only during a full moon or new moon. Can’t remember which. The bigger fish all live around them but are barely even noticed when the worms are glowing. The white drippy is the foamy water churned up by the motors of boats as it takes tourists out to see the worms. The boats cut their motors near the worms because the worms like peaceful water.

I’m not a huge fan of abstract, but I really love the colors and the feeling (for me) of this.
It reminds me of a pond on a rainy day, with floating lilies at the bottom.

To me, it looks like little fishes cut into the background of blue water with illuminated plant life on the bottom and pollution floating down. How’s that?

I’m thinking along the lines of “Into every life a little rain must fall”.
I love the layers of color and texture, especially what’s peeking through from below.

I don’t know what the story might be, but would love to know it and the title! It makes me think of little fluffs of happiness bouncing up when the rain hits the ground! It’s really gives a happy feeling to look at!

Call me weird, but I liked the one you painted over the first time…the second one was truly a “mistake”–but I do love the last one. I would call it “Into each life a little rain must fall.” Notice I put “mistake” in quotes–there are no mistakes in art, of course, but when you make one, a true artist knows how to fix it. And sometimes it does take painting over the whole thing and starting fresh.

“Into each life some rain must fall” is what I thought of when I saw the final piece. Thanks for showing the progression. Question: Do you hang much of your work in your home? Do you switch out the pieces now and again? Do you ever just decide to sell some of it off? Thanks for the continued inspiration Julie!

Personally, I really dig the Double Blerg version! So cool to have part of the under painting showing through the leaves.
However, I love the final version even more! The texture is amazing and the colors are vibrant are very “you”.
I would probably give it a quarter turn to the right to take away the idea of rain falling on flowers. LOVE this – I’d totally hang it in my living room!

I absolutely love the first painting. All the colors and shapes and degrees of warmth. That’s a story all in itself. The final painting was beautiful and, yes, abstract, but the first really spoke to me. Could the painting title simply be: Trying an Abstract?

Definitely looks like a storm over the ocean to me. The little white circles could be people watching the rain come down. “Calm before the storm” maybe?

What popped into my head was not water but rather “Into the Woods.” It seems like an evocative view into a forest with a bit of light leading one on. I like the very first painting a lot actually.

It looks as though the lower groupings of red are reflections on water from the grouping above. I’m not sure if the red is city lights, a fire or the sunset trying to show itself through the clouds. I would call the painting “Reflections”.

My home is full of my art! I sometimes — but rarely — switch pieces around. I should sell more of it, but I cant figure out the practicalities of shipping.
