As I mentioned in a previous post, I had asked the question, "What is your favorite art/craft book?" There were lots of great suggestions and I thought I'd compile them into one big list (in several parts) in case you're a book junkie like I am!
Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists by Carla Sonheim
From Amazon: "Carla Sonheim is an artist and creativity workshop instructor known for her fun and innovative projects and techniques designed to help adult students recover a more spontaneous, playful approach to creating. Her innovative ideas are now collected and elaborated on in this unique volume. Carla offers a year's worth of assignments, projects, ideas, and techniques that will introduce more creativity and nonsense into your art and life."
Collage Lab by Bee Shay
From Amazon: "Collage Lab offers artists and crafters a fun and experimental approach to making art. The book is organized into 52 different labs which may, but don't need to be, explored on a weekly basis. The labs can be worked in any order, so that readers can flip around to learn a new mixed-media technique or be inspired by a particular collage theme or application. The underlying message of this book is that artists can and should learn and gain expertise through experimentation and play. There is no right or wrong result for a given exercise, yet readers will gain skills and confidence in collage techniques, allowing them to take their work to a new level."
A Creative Companion by SARK
From Amazon: "Writer, artist, free spirit, and self-described "dangerous woman, " SARK readsfrom her lovely, lighthearted book on becoming an artist. Guaranteed to bringa little magic into even the most sensible life."
A Life in Hand: Creating the Illuminated Journal by Hannah Hinchman
From Amazon: "This book has created a nationwide interest in illustrated journal-keeping. It's a friendly, exquisitely illustrated volume from someone who is obviously nature-connected and literate to boot. If you like maps, natural history illustration, or if you are one of those who have always wanted to draw, but don't believe you can….this is the book for you "
Celebrate Your Creative Self by Mary Todd Beam
From Amazon: "Celebrate Your Creative Self helps you act upon your artistic inspirations and joyfully appreciate the creative process. You'll develop the skills you need to express yourself and explore your favorite mediums."
Surface Treatment Workshop by Darlene Olivia McElroy and Sandra Duran-Wilson
From Amazon: "Pondering how to begin a new piece of art? Surface Treatment Workshop has the answer! The authors of Image Transfer Workshop are back to show you 45 stepped-out mixed-media techniques that will add depth and texture to your artwork. These techniques are the perfect jump-off point for creating art you will love to look at, and, in some cases, touch!"
The Creative Entrepreneur by Lisa Sonora Beam
From Amazon: "The Creative Entrepreneur was voted Winner, in two categoriesβCraft and Business, of the 2009 IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Benjamin Franklin Award which recognizes excellence in publishing. This book is for the large audience of artists, crafters, and creative individuals from all walks of life who desire to make a livelihood from their creative work, or who possibly have achieved some success, but donβt know how to replicate it or move to another level of accomplishment."
Personal Geographies by Jill K Berry
From Amazon: "You don't have to be a world traveler or a professional cartographer to embark on a grand journey of self-discovery through mapmaking. Personal Geographies gives you the tools and techniques you'll need to create artful maps of your self, your experiences and your personal journey. Chart the innermost workings of your mind, document your artistic path and create an unfolding maze of your future dreams and goals."
Collage Discovery Workshop by Claudine Hellmuth
From Amazon: "In Collage Discovery Workshop, acclaimed collage artist Claudine Hellmuth shares 15 of her favorite collage techniques and invites you to play with basic collage materials in new and imaginative ways. Along the way, Claudine guides you with friendly advice on how to develop your artistic voice and turn an ordinary collage into something special."
Layered Impressions by Katie Kendrick
From Amazon: "Layered Impressions is the muse you need to marry your love of written expression and your passion for paint, revealing the colors of your true nature–the whispers from your soul. Katie Kendrick leads you into her world of impressionistic painting and shares her techniques for creating art that is as authentic and multilayered as you are."
Water Paper Paint by Heather Smith Jones
From Amazon: "This book is not only for 'painters' but for all types of creative individuals who want to experience and play with watercolor, whether their background is mixed-media, textile art, journaling, or paper craft. Unlike the typical watercolor text books, this unique, beautiful volume is a field book of inspiration, creative ideas, how to's, and projects, all from an artist's perspective."
The New Acrylics by Rheni Tauchid
From Amazon: "Traditional technique based books on acrylics cover traditional methods of painting. However, The New Acrylics is geared toward more nonconventional ways in which to manipulate modern-day acrylics, and demonstrates new applications such as glazing, textured effects, soft sculpture effects, or staining, thus reinventing the old way of handling acrylics, and revealing a fabulous new artistic medium."
Color Mixing Bible by Ian Sidaway
From Amazon: "Mixing colors accurately may be an art unto itself. In fact, many artists are discouraged by the time and expense it takes to mix and match colors, and achieve the right results. Even more frustrating is the vast range of colors available. Now thereβs a ready-to-use visual directory that takes all the guesswork out of mixing and matching colors . . . making every artist an expert! Color Mixing Bible provides a basic color palette for each art medium, demonstrating an array of two-, three-, and four-color mixes, as well as offering full explanations of various paints and pigments."
Art at the Speed of Life by Pam Carriker
From Amazon: "Need high-energy inspiration when your life gets crazy and your art keeps getting pushed to the back burner? Offering terrific mixed-media art projects, as well as tips for getting organized and inspired, Art at the Speed of Life is a treasure chest of ideas for the artist whose creative goals sometimes get stymied by the frantic pace of modern life."
So, that's it! More than fifty book recommendations for you to consider (part one, two, three). As great as blogs and classes and DVDs are, in my opinion there's no substitute for a book. A really good craft/art book gives you time and space and is so much deeper and richer than any blog, class or DVD could ever be.
If you have read any of the books in today's post, please leave a comment letting us know your opinion on the book!
Thanks for stopping by!
I love your posts. I’ve only read two, keep looking at another, but haven’t even seen most of these. And I NEED a new book to read. Collage Discovery Workshops is packed full of great collage tips and is well organized. Art at the Speed of Life is one of my favorites in my stash. So many different mixed media ideas.

Art at the Speed of Life is a favorite in my creative inspiration collection! I also have Pam’s DVD of the same title where she demonstrates so many of her techniques and gives great tips. This book is packed full of practical advice to help a busy artist balance and achieve their artistic goals. Many other artist are featured and it is peppered here and there with projects. I value this book more for the advice and writing rather than for the actual how-to projects. It is like a shot of encouragement every time I pick it up.

Love love layered impressions. I hope to take a class with Katie one day. Very spiritual but also accessible.

I have read and used two of the books on this list. I loved Carla Sonheim’s book on drawing. I actually did all the exercises through participating in an online class of sorts through Artists of the Round Table. We got Carla’s permission to work out of her book, each of us bought a copy and someone planned which exercises to do when (we basically worked our way through the book). The amazing part was that Carla came online and posted comments on some of the art that got posted so that was cool and really useful. I also have and like Pam Carriker’s book, “Art at the Speed of Life”. I find it hard to actually work through a book with a lot of exercises or prompts unless I am doing it with a group and therefore have some accountability to actually do the practicing. Otherwise I have piles of books that never really get used, other than me looking through them (like art candy) which is NOT the same as doing the practice. Aloha, Kate

I have and continue to refer to Lisa Sonora Beam’s excellent book The Creative Entrapreneur. The advise and art are both worthy of separate books but together they are a must have. Persoal Geographies by Jill K Berry is another favorite book because of my personal experiences as a military brat…we brats track our lives by where we lived at the time of the experience as it was our frame of reference for our lives. It is a how to book with templates as well as many beautiful illustrations. I cannot recommend both of these books too highly. If you are lucky enough to have a library with a substantial “art” inventory you may find these, otherwise get copies for yourself as you will not want to let them go.

i own the drawing lab, which i need to revisit, because it’s been awhile. carla’s exercises i did try, were fun. the creative companion i had before i ever really did art. back then, i just liked sark so much. the words are fun, but i don’t think sark’s books motivate me to do art. the collage discovery workshop was one of my first art books. it’s not really my style, anymore. i don’t know if it ever was. when i bought the creative entrepreneur, it seemed like a good idea. i haven’t really used it. now i don’t even know why i got it. celebrate the creative self is one of my oldest art books too. it has very specific and interesting concepts for art activities. they are kind of like art challenges. π

I still have a question regarding part 3: Does Isobel Hale’s book “Embroidered books” teach to make such lovely book covers as you can see on the photo?
I also worked through Carla Sonheim’s book with the artists of the round table and liked it a lot. Another book I own is Water paper paint. I find it very inspiring too and tried a few exercises for myself, but I agree that it is more difficult to stick to a book if you work on it by yourself…

I checked out Surface Treatment Workshop from the library and it’s fantastic! They show many different techniques as well as variations you can try for each one. Lots of pictures and example pages!

I have four of these books! Drawing Lab, which is lots of fun; Surface Treatment Workshop – which I have on my Kindle Fire, a great reference book for when you need to be inspired to try a new technique; Celebrate Your Creative Self – I have only briefly flipped through this so far!; and Art at the Speed of Life, which I love!

I have three of them.
Drawing Lab is a good book with lots of great exercises that I’m sure would help most people learn to draw better. I seem to have no drawing genes whatsoever and found it pretty discouraging. However, I need to give it another try.
Layered Impressions is great, one of my top 3 faves (along with Layered, Tattered and Stitched, and Mixed Media Nature Journals). Love most of the projects cause they’re a bit grungy, use things like cardboard, etc, that I have an abundance of. If I ever learn to paint a face I like, it will be from this book or from Julie’s blog.
Art at the Speed of Life is good also. The projects aren’t quite as far up my alley as Layered Impressions but I like it for the various bits of advice on how to cram art into your day. Also like the quickie version of the projects. Gives me ideas on how to create quicker/easier with my own stuff.

I have read the SARK book and more of hers as well.
They are fun, creative and great for encouraging playfulness.

I couldn’t agree more – without some way of making myself go through the exercises, books are just interesting to thumb through.
I have the Drawing Lab book, and I’m not getting as much out of it as I could be. I have borrowed Layered Impressions from the library, but it didn’t do anything for me I’m afraid. Just a little too out there for what I was looking for. I’ve had Art at the Speed of Life on my wishlist for a while, but have been on the fence about it. Thanks everyone for the good reviews, might have to get it next time I have some fun-money!

I own the Creative Entrepreneur and love it. I also have checked out Drawing Lab and Surface Treatment Workshop from the library. I think they’re both worthy of adding to my collection. They really spur creativity with ideas and techniques that are actually do-able!
Thanks Julie for posting all of these books; I think this series was so informative and helpful. As a craft and book-lover, I’m excited to revisit favorites and discover new ones too.

I have Carla Sondheim’s book on drawing. We have different styles but I have used her book especially when I need to loosen up and have fun. I love her style and it’s been a while – so I guess I need to take a look again. It is a wonderful, fun, drawing book!

My daughter bought the Surface Treatment Workshop book. I borrowed it and she isn’t getting it back. I am going to try everyone of the ideas. I have done five so far. Easy to follow, has tip boxes for what could go wrong, very helpful. Love the book!
